Controlled experimentation practice Yeast Population

Name _____________________________________________

Read the following experiment and identify all experimental components listed below.

Students were asked to develop an experiment to test the effect of temperature on yeast population
growth. Yeast is a microorganism that produces carbon dioxide (CO2) gas as a byproduct of their
metabolism. As a yeast population grows, CO2 is produced in increasing amounts. The most effective
temperature should produce the most growth as indicated by the greatest amount of CO2 produced.
Students thought that yeast will grow more at a warm temperature. This is what they did.

1) The students mixed 3 mL of yeast and 3 ml of molasses in three test tubes.

2) They inverted each test tube inside a larger one, so to capture CO2 as it is produced.
3) They placed one test tube at a warm temperature, and one at a cool temperature.
4) They left one test tube at room temperature to compare to the other two
5) They recorded the amount of CO2 accumulated in each test tube after 30 minutes.
