What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
I would like my students to be able to present their very own short story on PowerPoint and
include the different transition words (first, next, then, finally) by being able to understand
the basics of story writing and using their own creativity and including these words while still
having the story make sense.
The students should have at least up to 4 slides (each word on one slide) and use pictures to
help represent their story.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I would like to start off this lesson by going over the transition words (first, next, then, finally)
through a basic discussion to start off by seeing what the students may know. Then I would
show the students my story on the board and since my story has questions in it, I would want
the students to participate the best that they can and be able to remember the specific
words given. After reading the story all together the students will also have time to look back
over the story on their own to give them time to think about what they would like to write
about, or even just listen to the story again (it has audio). The students’ goals will be
announced by me but then also visual on the board just in case they need to look back. Their
goals are to make a 4 slide PowerPoint with each transition word on one of the pages.
Students will utilize the technology by making their very own story using the tool PowerPoint.
Feedback will be provided when the students finish their story, or if they need help, they are
always welcomed to ask questions. I think a fun way to conclude the lesson is by having the
students share their stories and present where they put their transition words on their
PowerPoint. They don’t have to share if they don’t want to, but it’s a way to show all the
students’ different creative ways to make stories while still including the transition words.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
I think it would be fun if students were also able to make stories together to bring their
creativity together and collaborate and practice working together. I would have to give the
students a set time so that they are not becoming distracted and not working on the project.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Lesson Idea

I feel that my activity I planned for my students supports all students and their learning goals.
By talking about and showing the students the PowerPoint first is helpful for a class
discussion and questions afterwards. Then having the opportunity for students to watch it on
their own time to be able to go back and rewatch it and be able to listen because PowerPoint
has that option, the students who may need the extra help while reading gets that
opportunity to listen. I feel that all the principles of UDL is used in the classroom.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

After designing this lesson, I think the impact will come from their creativity. Students will be
able to write their own story using the transition words and be able to make their own story
using PowerPoint. I think students will always need to know the transition words and it will
impact their understanding by being able to create it themselves. PowerPoint is a great tool
that the students will use throughout their lives and introducing it by giving them the
opportunity to be creative and figure out how to use the PowerPoint tool.
