No Prep Activities For Big Kids

St. Patrick’s Day

No Prep Activities for Big Kids
This pack contains simple to implement, standards based activities for St. Patrick’s Day. In the past, I rarely did anything special for St.
Patrick’s Day, but when I saw how excited our younger students were for all things green, I felt bad that my third graders were missing
out on the fun! I wanted to create fun, St. Patrick’s Day activities with an academic focus, so I got to work. I’m pretty excited about the
final result, and I hope your students will enjoy these eight printables too.

Rainbow Experiment
Materials
• Clear tube or cylinder • Vegetable Oil
• Droppers • Water
• Food coloring • Rubbing Alcohol
• Four cups • Corn Syrup (light)

Purpose
• The purpose of this experiment is to see if all liquids have the same density.

Directions
• Use food coloring to color each liquid (except the vegetable oil).
• Slowly and carefully pour an inch of the corn syrup into the cylinder.
• Use a dropper to add an inch of water on top of the corn syrup.
• Next, use a dropper to add an inch of vegetable oil on top of the water.
• Finish it off with an inch of colored rubbing alcohol.

Notes
• Each of the liquids had a different density. They were added to the cylinder in order of most
dense to least dense. Since each new liquid was less dense than the one before it, it floated on
top instead of mixing together.
Rainbow Experiment
Write a question that explains the purpose of this experiment. What are we trying to discover?

What type of liquid do you think has the least density? Write your hypothesis.
