Problem 1. Three strain gauges are attached to a thin stressed metallic plate as shown in the figure
1. The strain readings are as follows.

𝜀 4 𝑥 10 ;𝜀 2 𝑥 10 and 𝜀 3 𝑥 10

Compute 𝜀 and 𝜀 (note 𝜀 𝛾 /2)

Problem. 2 A thin rectangular palte shown in figure 2 of dimension 4 x 3 units is subjected to


uniform strains given by,

𝜀 5 𝑥 10 ;𝜀 2.5 𝑥 10 and 𝛾 = 1𝑥 10

Determine change in length of the diagonal AB.

Problem 3. In Cartesian co‐ordinate system, the displacement vector (u,v,w) is given as

𝑈 𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧 𝑣 = 𝑦 3𝑧 10
𝑤 8𝑥 3𝑧
Determine a) strain tensor at (x=1, y=1 and z=1); b) Strain invariants and c) principal strains and
verify the strain invariants using principal strains.

Problem 4. The displacement field in a 3d body is given by,
