Film review : The Greatest Showman

By Vrintha

The Greatest Showman is a 2017 American biographical musical drama film which
released in December 2017, directed by Michael Gracey from a screenplay written by Jenny
Bicks and Bill Condon, and a story by Bicks. The film stars an ensemble cast led by Hugh
Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. This movie tells us
about how the greatest show and such a phenomenon by P. T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman) in
nineteenth century. The genre of The Greatest Showman is drama musical. In this film, 70% to
80% have been told by songs. This film is started by Barnum, is showing his action in the circus
with singing also in the end of the film. Those songs are catchy and a cinch listening. It will
make the watcher enjoys the film and want to sing together. There are many songs that will be
played in the film. Those songs are created by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The songs is so
incredible and beautiful, through the songs the story can be imagine.

The film is basically about orphaned, penniless, but ambitious and with a mind crammed
with imagination and fresh ideas, the American entertainer, Phineas Taylor Barnum, will always
be remembered as the man with the gift to blur the line between reality and fiction. Thirsty for
innovation and hungry for success, the son of a tailor manages to open a wax museum;
however, he soon shifts focus to the unique and the peculiar, introducing extraordinary,
never-seen-before live acts on the circus stage. Now, some people call Barnum's rich collection
of oddities, an outright freak show; but, when Phineas, obsessed for cheers and respectability,
gambles everything on the opera singer, Jenny Lind, to appeal to a high-brow audience, he will
lose sight of the most crucial aspect of his life: his family.

great movie for me still from 2017 when I first saw it to 2018 this is still The Greatest Movie!

The timing of this release is interesting. On May 21, 2017, Ringling Brothers and Barnum
& Bailey Circus folded up its tent for good, after 146 years of uninterrupted operation. Rocked
by controversy due to criticisms of exploitation and animal abuse, they retired the elephant acts
in 2016, but it was too late. Barnum was dogged by criticisms from the beginning. Many of the
"acts" were fakes. Barnum actually didn't say the quote most associated with him ("There's a
sucker born every minute") but he might as well have said it and his critics despised him for the
assumption about popular entertainment and the regular folk who enjoy it. But in the film,
Barnum, with a dazzling smile, explains to a skeptical journalist, "People come to my show for
the pleasure of being hoodwinked." I was hoodwinked by "The Greatest Showman." And it was
indeed a pleasure. Ringling Brothers may have closed up shop, but Barnum lives on.
