DIESEL EFI SYSTEM – EGR Control

2 – 8 EGR CONTROL

In the EGR control system, the engine ECU controls the vacuum regulating valve so that an
appropriate amount of exhaust gases can be recirculated into the combustion chamber in
response to the operating conditions of the engine. This results in a slower combustion rate,
lower combustion chamber, and reduced NOx emissions.

1 MAIN COMPONENTS CONSTRUCTION

1) Vacuum Regulator Valve (VRV)

 In response to the signals received
from the engine ECU, this valve
controls the vacuum generated by
the vacuum pump and applied to the
EGR valve.

 Vacuum is applied to the EGR valve

when the VRV is ON, and the
atmospheric pressure is applied
when the VRV is OFF.

2) EGR Valve
 The EGR valve opens and closes by
means of the pressures from VRV,
thus allowing the recirculation of the
exhaust gases from the exhaust
manifold into the intake manifold.

2 OPERATION

1) EGR Operation
Based on the relevant signals, the engine ECU controls (duty-cycle control) VRV in order to
regulate the vacuum applied to the EGR valve. Thus, the amount of exhaust gas
recirculation is regulated in response to the operating condition of the engine.

2) EGR Stopping
The engine ECU stops the EGR if any of the general conditions given below occurs.
 Coolant temperature below 60'C
 High load and high rpm operation
 Deceleration (EGR remains ON during idle)
 High-altitude driving

Using the intelligente tester, observe the operation of the EGR and the changes in
the duty cycle under a no-load driving condition.

1) Verify the relationship between the coolant temperature and the turning ON of the EGR.
 Start the engine from the cold state.
 Using the OBD function, read43the coolant temperature at
which the EGR turns ON.

2) Keeping the engine operating, monitor the changes in the duty cycle along with the
increase in the engine speed and verify when the EGR stops.
 Using the AUTOPROBE function, measure the duty cycle at EGR terminal.

 Increase the engine speed and read the duty cycle.

 Return to the "data list" display and read the engine speed at
which the EGR turns OFF.
