Engine Immobiliser System

DIESEL EFI SYSTEM – Diagnosis

2 – 10 ENGINE IMMOBILISER SYSTEM

The engine immobiliser system has been designed to prevent the vehicle from being stolen.
This system uses a transponder key computer that stores the ID code of the authorized
ignition key. If an attempt is made to start the engine using an unauthorized key, the
transponder key computer emits a signal to the engine ECU to prohibit both the supply pump
and injector operation in order to disable the engine.

2 – 11 DIAGNOSIS

 If the engine ECU detects any problem with a sensor or an electrical circuit, it turns on
check engine warning lamp in the combination meter to inform the driver. In addition, the
malfunction code will be stored in memory.

 An M-OBD (Multiplex On-Board Diagnostic) System has been adopted to improve

serviceability.

 The diagnosis system provides the following two modes: the normal mode, and the test
mode to be used exclusively by technicians.

On the simulator, create troubles in the systems indicated in the table in order to
verify the meanings indicated in the table, and the diagnostic procedures such as
accessing the DTCs diagnostic trouble codes), reading the codes, and erasing the
codes stored in memory.

Those indicated in the table above have been excerpted and simplified from the Diagnostic Trouble
Codes given in the end of this manual.

Part 1.

Verify the diagnostics in the normal mode.

Step 1: Create a condition for DTC 31 and verify the condition of the “Check Engine” warning light
“ON” and the meaning of the memory column being “O”.

1) Turn the ignition key ON to verify that the warning light ON and start the engine to
verify that the warning light OFF.

2) Using a lead, connect the terminals VG and El on the terminal plate and note down the
condition of the warning light in the table "3)" below.

Connecting the terminals in this rnanner is equivalent to the shorting of the Air Flow
Meter Circuit to ground.

3) Disconnect this connection (which is equivalent to resolving the trouble) and note down
the condition of the warning light in the table below.

48

In the normal mode, the illuminated warning light is OFF when the trouble is resolved.

4) Using the SST check wire, connect the

terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC3.
Read the DTC from the blinking of the
warning light.

5) Stop the engine ; then the ignition switch

ON to read the DTC.

1. If the DTC memory column is "O", a trouble has been stored in memory even if it
no longer exists. This type of trouble is not erased even if the ignition switch is
turned OFF.
2. On the other hand, with a type of DTC such as DTC 16 (refer to the material at the
end of the manual), in which the memory column is "X", the DTC number must
be read when the warning light is ON and the engine is operating.

6) Turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the check wire.

Step 2: Create a condition for DTC 22 and review how to read the DTC.

1) Start the engine and connect the terminals THW (water temperature sensor) and E2 on
the terminal plate, using the lead.

2) Verify that the warning light is ON after a slight delay following the connection of the
terminals.

3) Stop the engine, turn the ignition switch ON, and read the DTCs in the sequence in which
they are output.

51

The reason why the DTC 31 is output is that this code has not yet been erased from
memory .
4) Disconnect the connection between the terminals THW and E2.

Step 3: Create a condition for DTC 24 to verify the meaning of the normal mode column being
"OFF" and the output sequence of the DTC numbers.

1) Start the engine, disconnect the connector at the intake air temperature sensor, and verify
that the warning light in not ON.

The normal mode column being "OFF" means that the warning light is not ON in the
normal mode.

2) Stop the engine, turn the ignition switch ON, and read the DTCs in the sequence in which
they are output.

1. Although the warning light is not ON, DTC 24 was stored in memory. (This is the
meaning of the memory column being "O".)
2. The DTCs are output in the sequence starting with the smallest number.

3) Reconnect the intake air temperature sensor.

Etapa 4: Erase the memory and verify the normal operation of the system.

1) Turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the ECD fuse (15A) in the engine room R/B for
10 seconds or more to erase the DTCs stored in the ECU's memory.
2) With the ignition switch turned ON and connect the check wire to the check connector's TE1
and E1 terminals to verify that the warning light blinks continuously in an orderly manner.

Part 2.

Verify the diagnostics in the test mode.

Step 5: Make preparations for test mode inspections, call out the DTC by way of DTC 33, and
verify DTC=N.A.

1) Make preparations for test mode inspections.

Hand-held tester only:
Compared to the normal mode, the check mode has an increased sensitivity to detect
malfunctions.
Furthermore, the same diagnostic items which are detected in the normal mode can
also be detected in the check (test) mode.
(a) Check the DTC.
(1) Initial conditions.
• Battery positive voltage11 V or more
• Throttle valve fully closed
• Transmission in neutral position.
• A/C switched OFF.
(2) Turn the ignition switch OFF.
(3) Prepare the hand-held tester.
(4) Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
(5) Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester main switch ON.
(6) Switch the hand-held tester from the normal mode to the check (test) mode.
(Check that the check engine warning light goes warning light flashes.)

55

 The reason why DTC 33 is not displayed is that the test mode column is "NA" (not
aplicable).
 The reason why DTC 42 is displayed is that the vehicle is not being driven.
 If the memory column is " X ", the DTC numbers must be read without stopping the
engine.

Step 6: Review the preparation for the test mode inspections, create a condition for DTC 22,
verify the blinking condition of the warning light, and read the DTC.

1) Carry out the preparation for test mode inspections.

2) After starting the engine, connect the terminals THW (water temperature sensor) and E2
on the terminal plate, using the lead.

3) Verify that the warning light is ON immediately upon connecting the terminals.

Comparaed to the time it took in "Step 2; 2) ", the length of time that it takes to turn on
the warning light is very short. This short reaction time indicates the test mode’s
capability to detect instantaneous problems such as poor contact.

4) Disconnect the connections on the terminal plate and verify that the warning light does not
become OFF.

In the test mode, once the warning light has been on, it will not become off. Thus, the
warning light will not become OFF untill the test mode has been completed.

5) Read the DTC numbers in the sequence in which they are output.

Step 7: Review the preparations for the test mode inspections, create a condition for DTC 24,
read the DTC, and review the output sequence.

1) Carry out the preparations for test mode inspections.

2) Start the engine and disconnect the connector at the intake air temperature sensor.

At this time, the warning light is .

By connecting the connector, the warning light is .

3) Read the DTC numbers in the sequence in which they are output.

Step 8: Review how to erase the memory and to verify that the system is operating normally.

1) Erase the memory in the ECU.

2) Verify that there are no DTCs remaining in the system.
