1. What kind of activity did you choose and what style(s) and technique did you plan to
use to highlight the characteristics and conventions of the text type you chose to create?
[You must show your familiarity with the chosen activity; i.e. don’t make it seem as if
you chose a task/ text type that was completely new/ unfamiliar!]
We decided to analyze and compare two different car advertisement videos (Mercedes Benz and
Porsche). My analysis was based on Mercedes Benz advertisement. We made a PowerPoint
presentation and on each slide there were different characteristics such as stylistic features and
targeted audience etc. We wanted to analyze a video that has both text and auditory. Therefore,
within how the text was created, we also included the affect of background music and the tone of
the speaker to show how it helped deliver the advertisement.
1. What were the aims you had set yourself for this Oral Activity? What were the learning
objectives? Comment on your performance and the progress you made in achieving these
objectives [Don’t be too ambitious and focus on any 1 of the objectives. Take a look at the
column titled: "How is the assessment objective addressed?" under the section 'Assessment
objectives in practice' in the subject guide.]
The aim we set for this further oral activity was to focus on how language was used to create
the text rather than fully focusing on stylistic features. Also, develop in students the ability to
engage in close, detailed analysis of individual text and make relevant connections. I tried to
focus on two assessment objectives. Firstly, show the way mass media use language to
inform, persuade and entertain. I focused on all three: to inform, persuade and entertain based
on Mercedes Benz ad. I tried to identify pathos logos and ethos as different ways of
persuasion technique. Secondly, examine different form of communication within the media.
Within the video, the background music and the tone of the speaker greatly impacts how the
language is used to inform and entertain. I tried to identify how language was used and some
stylistic features. For example, how it used superlative form to convey to the readers.
Identified stylistic features such as anaphora and hyperbole etc. I believe my performance to
deliver the analysis was good but not excellent. Next time, I should focus more on to
identifying how language is used to create the text.
