LESSON 10-Commandments and the Beatitudes, the Foundations of Christian Morality

LET US LEARN MORE:

1. What do you think are the obstacles in living out the Beatitudes?
-Because of the effect of a culture that frequently promotes self-centeredness and individual
accomplishment, living out the Beatitudes can be difficult. When we are inundated with
messages of self-promotion and aggressiveness, it can be challenging to put others before
ourselves and emphasize humility, meekness, and these virtues. Making sacrifices for oneself is
another need of the Beatitudes. It entails acting with mercy, attempting to bring about peace,
and pursuing justice even when doing so may not be advantageous or convenient for us. This
can be difficult and require us to give up our goals and aspirations. Adopting the Beatitudes also
requires us to face our own shortcomings and shortfalls. It requires introspection and the
willingness to admit our faults, both of which may be difficult and occasionally unpleasant. And
last, practicing the Beatitudes may be met with hostility or persecution from others who do not
have the same ideals or views. It is possible to encounter opposition, criticism, or even
animosity from others while standing out for justice, kindness, and righteousness.
In conclusion, societal pressures, the necessity for personal sacrifices, the difficulty of self-
reflection, and the possibility of opposition or persecution are the challenges to carrying out the
Beatitudes.

2. What is the difference between materially poor and spiritually poor?

-Lack of bare necessities including food, clothes, and shelter is referred to as material poverty.
This condition has an impact on a person's physical health and possibilities in life. On the other
side, spiritual poverty is a feeling of inner emptiness or a lack of satisfaction. It has to do with
the absence of spiritual principles, connections, and significance, which results in emotions of
disconnection, aimlessness, or a lack of positive traits like love and thankfulness.

3. Do you think that the spiritually poor is humbler than the materially poor?
-No, having less financial wealth does not automatically make one more humble. One's
monetary or spiritual circumstances are not the only factors that influence humility. People from
many walks of life and situations exhibit the personality trait of humility. Though it ultimately
relies on their unique character, values, and decisions, both the spiritually poor and the
financially poor can demonstrate humility. While acknowledging their need for improvement and
seeking guidance, some spiritually impoverished people may show humility, while others may
not. Similarly, although some may lack humility in spite of their circumstances, other people who
are monetarily impoverished may display extraordinary humility by appreciating what they have
and expressing thanks. It is crucial to understand that humility is not reserved for any one
particular group and cannot be generalized on the basis of spiritual or material deprivation.
Instead of forming assumptions about people based on their circumstances, each person should
be recognized and assessed as an individual, taking into consideration their behaviors,
attitudes, and treatment of others. Spiritual poverty has to do with one's inner condition of
emotions, beliefs, and sense of purpose, as opposed to material poverty, which is about not
having enough resources. Both types of poverty have an effect on a person's well-being, thus
dealing with them calls for all-encompassing assistance and comprehension.
4. Is humility important in our quest for Christian morality? Please Explain.
-In our pursuit of Christian virtue, humility is of utmost importance. It serves as a reminder that
we are fallible and in need of God's mercy. It enables us to treat people with kindness, respect,
and empathy while appreciating their value. We can grow as people and learn from our errors
when we are humble. It keeps us rooted and prohibits us from becoming narrow-minded or
condemning. By accepting humility, we conform to Jesus' teachings and develop a Christ-like
attitude of love and service for others.

5. Is humility a form of docility and submissiveness? What is Christian humility?

-Christianity does not teach submission or passivity as examples of humility. It involves
accepting our station in regard to God and other people while maintaining a humble and
unselfish attitude. It highlights our reliance on God and our need for His direction rather than
minimizing our value or voice. Christian humility promotes an open mind and a desire to learn
and develop. It entails placing other people's needs and well-being first, emulating the selfless
love of Jesus. It changes us, promoting compassion, empathy, and a sincere desire to help
others in a gentle and humble way.

6. Compose your own beatitudes now as a student

-Blessed are the students who strive for knowledge and wisdom, for they shall find fulfillment in
their pursuit of learning.

Blessed are those who embrace challenges and setbacks, for through perseverance, they shall
achieve greatness.

Blessed are the curious minds, for they shall uncover new ideas and expand the boundaries of
understanding.

Blessed are compassionate hearts, for they shall sow seeds of kindness and make a positive
difference in the lives of others.

Blessed are those who practice humility and embrace diverse perspectives, for they shall foster
unity and create harmonious communities.

Blessed are the resilient souls who face adversity with courage and resilience, for they shall
emerge stronger and inspire others with their resilience.

Blessed are the creative spirits who dare to dream and explore, for they shall bring forth
innovation and inspire others with their imagination.

Blessed are those who embrace collaboration and teamwork, for they shall create synergies
and achieve greater collective success.

Blessed are the seekers of truth and justice, for they shall strive to create a more just and
equitable society.

Blessed are the compassionate peacemakers, for they shall bring harmony and reconciliation in
a world filled with conflict.

May these Beatitudes guide and inspire students to cultivate qualities that will lead to personal
growth, positive impact, and a brighter future for all.

20. S, Sloth is a spiritual, mental, or physical laziness that causes neglect of duties.

Explain. How do virtuous people differ from vicious people? -People who are virtuous vary from
those who are wicked mostly in character and behavior. Morally upright people display traits like
honesty, integrity, compassion, and humility. They make an effort to act ethically upright and in
others' best interests. Virtuous people are driven by a feeling of obligation, a desire for personal
development, and a dedication to moral standards. Violent people, on the other side, lack these
beneficial attributes and exhibit characteristics like dishonesty, selfishness, brutality, and pride.
They disdain morality and frequently behave in ways that are harmful to other people or
themselves. Vicious people are motivated by self-interest, a lack of empathy, and a disdain for
the welfare of others. In conclusion, virtuous individuals demonstrate good character qualities
and behave morally, whereas vicious people do the opposite and engage in destructive actions.
The distinction may be seen in the principles they defend and the decisions they make in life.

LESSON 12- Approaches to Other Religions as Christian Discipleship

LET US LEARN MORE:

1. The word ecumenism refers to all of the activities and initiatives of the Church and her
members to promote mutual understanding and, ultimately, unity among all Christians
including the different religions.

2. The shortest route to a proper understanding of ecumenism in the modern context is to

read Vatican II’s decree on ecumenism, which is a relatively brief and eminently clear
document.
3. Pope John Paul II issued a longer and deeper document on the subject, Ut Unum Sint
(That They May Be One) in 1995.

4. Christ established the Church on the Apostles and their episcopal successors, whose
visible head and principle of unity became Peter and his successor the Bishop of Rome.

5. The Catholic decree on ecumenism reminds us that under the influence of the Holy
Spirit, we are going to make Christian unity more visible.

6. The Catholic decree on ecumenism, recognizes in other religions that search of unity,
since God wants all men to be saved.

7. Vatican II’s Decree on Ecumenism – Unitas Redintegratio further deepens John17:20-

23.

8. For Catholics then, working for ecumenism is an imperative as a Gospel value.

9. Christ established the apostles and their episcopal successors, whose visible head and
principle of unity became Peter and his successor the Bishop of Rome.

10. Vatican II also issued a declaration (Nostra Aetate).

I. Essay. Answer very briefly.

1. How does ecumenism become an example of Christian discipleship?- By exemplifying

the teachings of Jesus to love one another, seek unity, and work for reconciliation,
ecumenism becomes a model of Christian discipleship. In order to promote mutual
respect and understanding, Christians must put aside their differences, forge alliances,
and engage in discussion.

2. Why is ecumenism a gigantic step toward Christian unity?- Because it recognizes

similar values and ground across many Christian traditions, ecumenism is a huge step
toward Christian unity. Ecumenism fosters communication and collaboration, removing
obstacles that have divided Christians for centuries and opening the way for healing and
reconciliation.

3. In your own idea, what are the reasons on Catholic’s concern on her approaches to
other religions? Cite at least two reasons only.-Catholics are concerned about how other
religions treat them because they understand how crucial it is to advance tolerance,
respect, and peace among all believers. They aim to cultivate a culture of encounter that
permits the exchange of spiritual ideals and the pursuit of shared objectives through
encouraging conversation, developing connections, and fostering contact.

4. How could ecumenism contribute to the unity of all Christians?- By encouraging shared
projects that address social, ethical, and spiritual issues and by providing forums for
discussion, ecumenism helps to bring all Christians closer together. Christians may
demonstrate to the world the transformational power of unity and the shared goal of
sharing the Gospel via ecumenical initiatives.

5. Do all religions, including other Christians outside Catholic Church, cooperate to this
call of the Church?-While collaboration between other religions and Christian
denominations varies, all Christians share responsibility for the call for unity. In order to
promote understanding, advance peace, and strive toward a more peaceful world,
cooperation and conversation across many religious traditions, including those outside of
the Catholic Church, are crucial.
