The fastest-growing
green jobs
The explosion of interest in sustainable development
has created great new opportunities for young people.
This week we look at four jobs directly benefitting from
the growth of the green economy.
A Urban growers
To become an urban grower you need to be passionate
about plants, growing things and sustainable
development, and also want to contribute to a better
food system. Urban agriculture is increasing in popularity
and an urban grower is an expert whose aim is to provide
access to locally-grown food and bring food culture back
into urban areas. The work is mainly outside, in gardens
but also on roof-top terraces. You’ll be required to work
weekends and variable hours, and to work overtime in
the summer season. Knowing all about how food grows,
and what grows regionally and seasonally will help you
create a great working garden. The position will often
require working co-operatively with other growers on
larger jobs and you will also need to be able to negotiate
with clients on layout and cost. Based on the job
advertisements we’ve seen, a degree in Plant Science or
a related subject will come in handy. Most people work
as employees of larger firms, but some decide to work
freelance once they’ve built up enough contacts.
B Clean car engineers
Being a clean car engineer is likely to put you in high
demand in the future as road transport typically
represents over one-third of a country’s greenhouse gas
emissions. You’ll need to have a strong interest in
industrial manufacturing and an eye for quick solutions
to any one of the many technical problems that can
occur throughout the design and testing phases. To be
successful, you’ll also need to have good communication
skills, as you’ll be dealing with various people from
technicians to final users (that is, car drivers). As this is a
highly attractive position, there’s likely to be plenty of
competition for this kind of work, but having entered the

field you should hopefully find a well-paid position. You
may well end up in in the research and development
division of a large car manufacturer, so you should be
prepared to relocate if these companies are not in your
current area. Getting some hands-on experience at
school or college working on energy-efficient cars, for
example in design competitions, will help you get off to
a good start in the industry.
C Natural scientists
You don’t have to be a famous television presenter like
David Attenborough to be a natural scientist. In this job
you’ll find yourself working both in the field and in the
laboratory. Your tasks will include helping chart
evidence of the Earth’s changing climate and observing
its impact on natural ecosystems, for example through
changes to ocean water acidity. Demand for this type of
work is predicted to rise significantly in the near future.
Good communication skills are essential as you’ll be
dealing with other laboratory staff and preparing
reports on what you have found. If you manage to
reach a senior management role, you’ll also coordinate
the work of a wide range of people from chemists and
physicists to biologists. You’ll need to obtain a degree
in Natural Sciences and be willing to work inside a large
institution or corporation to carry out research work.
D Green builders
Given the opportunity, do you think you could build a
new school from some earth and waste products such as
tyres and plastic bottles? If so, you’re perfectly suited to
becoming a green builder. This job is all about what can
be done with existing materials to create sustainable
housing and working spaces with minimal impact on the
Earth’s resources. You could have a range of
responsibilities, from acting as site manager, to ensuring
safe and efficient design, to collaborating with architects.
You’ll need to have a good understanding of how to
exploit solar and wind power for heating and lighting as
well as the ability to work out the most cost-effective
ecosolutions in terms of choice of design and materials.
