Activity 2: Know It and Be Safe!

Directions: Answer the question below. Write your answer in your activity

1. What is the difference between drill and training? _________________

What is It

Occupational safety is one of the things that a workplace has to

address in order to reduce the amount of unnecessary injuries that fully
occur. Procedures for occupational health and safety (OHS) are established
in a workplace to ensure that proper guidelines and actions are implemented
to minimize health and safety issues in fulfilling any job requirement. These
procedures will ensure that safety tops the priority list. A workplace, aside
from well-established OHS procedures, may also conduct drills and training
for its employees. Taking part in exercises and trainings would help enrich
everybody's practical and technological
knowledge.
A drill is a way to practice the actions
and measures that must be carried out in the
event of an emergency in the workplace. The
drills are composed of general topics such as
health, wellness, disasters, emergencies and
rapid response. Drills also illustrate the
different situations that can occur in an
unexpected incident. An emergency action
plan covers designated measures that must
be taken by employers and employees to
ensure safety from emergencies. Participating
in such drills will give the workers the mind-set and attitude necessary to
perform in an emergency situation.

4
Drills can include requests for first aid in the event of injury and an
evacuation plan in the event of a disaster. Drills must always be taken
seriously.
On the other hand, training is a way to educate a worker about how to
perform a specific job. It may be the operation of a particular device, or how to
efficiently fulfill a job requirement. A trainer, usually a person who is very
competent in using a tool or performing a job, is given the task to relay the skills to
his trainees. Trainings are usually given to new employees who have little to no
experience in performing specific tasks or using a tool or equipment. Experienced
employees will need to undergo preparation should new techniques and
methodologies be implemented at the workplace.
It is important that the company creates its own set of guidelines in
addressing different scenarios especially those dealing with health and life. Some of
the guidelines they should address include emergency situations, crisis and other
related accidents. The company's available resources, external contacts and
partner organizations or institutions should also be considered in case of
emergency situations.
Employees must take heed and remember these protocols. They should
attend the company orientation and be updated with any change in the company's
policies and guidelines from time to time. Doing so will equip them with the right
line of action to conduct whenever a situation arises.

Below are some guidelines in administering emergency assistance within the

workplace:
 Assess if the situation is an emergency and if it will need professional or
medical assistance.
 Contact the management team to notify them of the emergency.
 After reporting the incident, check if the victim needs first aid. If you do not
know how to do first-aid, contact your company nurse or doctor.
 Report the incident to authorities.
 Should media contact you for statements, direct them to the proper team
(this is usually the public relations or media affairs group).

Natural calamities are considered emergency scenarios, such as floods,

typhoons and earthquakes. When dealing with these situations, stay tuned to the
company advisories and asks for instructions from designated marshals or point
persons who knew the organizational procedures in handling and managing these
cases. Employees should be made aware of the guidelines and must be updated
regularly. It is also important for everybody to observe, follow and be accountable of
their actions.
