SUBJECT: Hand tool accidents SITE:
PRESENTED BY:
WEEKLY OBJECTIVE:

Hand tools cause approximately 10% of all accidents

on site. These are the five main causes:

1. Using the wrong tool for the job – e.g. using a

screwdriver as a chisel.
2. Using tools in poor condition – e.g. mushroom
head chisels and damaged electrical cables.
3. Using tools the wrong way – not grounding power
tools, or placing equipment into a vise to secure item
before working.
4. Keeping tools in unsafe areas – e.g. leaving them
overhead where they can fall, carrying sharp tools in
pockets.
5. Using homemade tools not designed for the job –
e.g. Reinforcing bars for chisels.

STEPS TO PREVENT HAND TOOL ACCIDENTS

1. Select the proper tool for the job ensuring it’s in good
working condition.
2. Use factory designed and manufactured tools.
3. Sharp or pointed tools should not be carried in the
pocket, unless a safety sheath protects blades or sharp
points.
4. Use the tool correctly.
5. Keep tools in good repair. Broken tools should be
repaired immediately.
