Leading a generation for the betterment of our people

END GALAMSEY INITIATIVE

1. NAME OF SOLUTION
Western North Binary Grassroot Youth Engagement on Alternatives to Galamsey.
2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF SOLUTION

The project is a voluntary, remote and self-paced programme intervention. It is designed to be an

Information Exchange, Tools and Resource Sharing, Train-the-Trainer programme to inspire and
help the youth to have alternative source of income other than going into Galamsey to destroy lands
and water bodies. This will enable them to accelerate the impact and better position their
communities to harness and maximize the gains in innovative farming and hands-on craft work.
Youth who will receive training will volunteer to help in reclamation of degraded lands for
agriculture production by covering pits left behind by Galamsey activities. It focusses on recruiting
and training youth from each district on the various negative impact of Galamsey, and what they
have not realized as opportunity in our region. Also, they will be informed about the African
Continental Free Trade Area, African Union Agenda 2063 and the SDGs. We will create a mapping
of those who go into farming with Industries under the 1D1F program to enable readily market for
their crops. We will use equipment such projectors, laptops and camera to develop an extensive
videos and booklets to teach and educate the masses in both English and in their local dialect.
3. SOLUTION TARGET

Our solution targets particularly Women and Youth who could go into Small and Medium
Entrepreneurship but are rather involved in Galamsey.
4. TO ELABORATE ON OUR SOLUTION
Our proposed solution is to develop a regional youth training system, where qualified and
competent people from our region will volunteer to teach youth engaged in Galamsey from each
of the districts on current and innovative ways of farming, craftworks (Soap and sanitizer making,
beads making, dress making, among others). Those who have gotten some money through
Galamsey will be helped to start their own business in a way to discourage them from thinking the
only way to succeed in life is to go into Galamsey. They will be taught how to start a business and
growing it to a sustainable end. Those who will receive the training will also train starters and
entrepreneurs in various communities in their respective districts. Hence making Galamsey

unpopular and unattractive venture for our youth. Some of the youth who have learned how to drive
tractors used for the Galamsey will volunteer to cover pits left behind by the act of Galamsey. This
will be made possible by using seized machines such as tractors to cover the lands.
The concept is a binary system, where a team of experts at the regional level select at least 10
young entrepreneurs from each district (base on the size and population) to receive technical
training and guidance on the SDGs and African Continental Free Trade Area and how to develop
an innovative and effective business to generate a sustained income. Trainees from the regional
level will act as district coordinating team of which each of them will be charged to supervise a
number of communities where they will recruit at least 25 other young entrepreneurs in each
community in their district. Entrepreneurs who have received training at the community level will
form the unit committee, where they will meet regularly to share ideas and as well visit public
gatherings such as churches and markets to educate the populace on why they should not give their
lands out for Galamsey and why they should all come together to discourage the act.
Our solution is innovative in such a way that we wouldn’t need much effort to reach out to a larger
number of youths, training and enlightening one person on the initiative will end up educating other
100 or more youth. As we are conscious about COVID 19 protocols, our training sessions wouldn’t
gather more than 100 people at a time but if every single trainee is training another group of
individuals, then we are counting of having 90 youth undergoing training at the regional level (10
each from the 9 municipal/district Assembly), 900 trainees at the district level (each of the 90
training 10 each) and 22,500 at the community level (this will form the unit and grassroots training
machinery). With 22,500 entrepreneurs receiving skills and knowledge of the negative impact of
Galamsey and helping them have alternative source of income across the region, we will end up
reaching every single individual from the western north region. What would make our solution
different is how flexible and sizable nature each supervisory role could be executed without
difficulties since it deals with a few youths at a time. Our strategy will engage and train women
and youth with or without any formal educational qualifications but with passion to do something
to generate income for their daily upkeep other destroying our land.
5. DURATION OF THE PROJECT
It will take us 6months to a 1 year to have a complete execution of our project with a proper
review.

6. LINKS TO ANY OF THE SDG GOALS

our solution will as well work towards the attainment of the UN 2030 Sustainable
Development Goals, African Continental Free Trade Area, and African Union Agenda 2063.
1. Training sessions will focus on equipping the youth with practical step by step processes
of starting business and growing it to a sustainable stage. Craft men and women (like
carpenters and dressmakers, among others) and market women will be taught some
basic means of branding their products by offering free to cheaper IT support which in
a way will increase their sales and attract a larger market. This will produce many
innovative startups in our region and create jobs and eliminate poverty at large.
2. Western north is a typical farming zone, hence farmers, especially women and youth
who are involved in Galamsey will be guided on some innovative farming methods to
attract more youth to go into farming through planting for food and job initiative. This
will increase the availability of food staff to the people and possibly export it to other
cities in Ghana and our neighboring country.
7. EFFORTS BEEN MADE TO IMPLEMENT THIS SOLUTION
Our team of expertise have over the years pull our strength together to execute the binary
strategy in sharing opportunities and ideas and means of getting things done. Through our
established strong presence in all the nine municipal /district assemblies and as well initiated the
WNYF Youth volunteer corps, where youth volunteer to undertake public education on important
societal issues. We have also initiated the western north youth foundation innovative farming,
where we educate farmers in the villages on some of the strategic means they can diversify their
farming business. We have also created contacts with expertise and other government agencies
such as the Agric-extension officers, university lectures who would help in the training and
empowerment of the youth on our proposed project. We have also initiated the western North
Women in Leadership, where we empower and support ladies who wants to go into leadership and

entrepreneurship.

8. IDENTIFIED PATNERS FOR THE INITIATIVE

We have already engaged and informed our close partners to be on standby to support us with the
implementation of the solution
To mention few; we have
1. The Western North Regional Coordinating Council
2. Olam Ghana Company Ltd

3. National Union of Sefwi Students

4. National Union of Suaman Students
5. National Union of Aowin Students

6. Oxfam Ghana
7. Dinpa Creations
8. Western North Traditional Council

9. Vision FM
10. Uniik FM

11. De-Beat FM
12. Liberty FM
13. PLANS ON SUSTAINING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SOLUTION
Members of the team are made up of young dedicated youth who volunteer to offer services to
the foundation during our communal engagement projects. We will consult our traditional leaders
who willingly offer support through referral to appropriate government agencies found in our
region for any form of assistance required. Media personalities in our region are our official
Goodwill Ambassadors, hence our projects will be given free publicity on radio stations.
Bringing all these together gives us the edge to sustain the initiative once it is fully
operationalized.

Having all our expertise and volunteers in place, what we encounter as a challenge is the source of
funding for basic needs such as food, transportation, technical logistics and accommodation needed
for our youth who are offering free services with their expertise. A source of funding from your
institution will facilitate our execution process as we can have constant and continual engagement
of the people at the grassroots level.

14. IMPACT OF THE SOLUTION AT A GRASSROOT LEVEL.

Getting the opportunity to educate the masses about the negative impact of Galamsey on
our land, and offering them the technical and professional support to start their own
business will impact our people about how they could generate funds for their daily upkeep,
thus; Our solution will transform peasant farmers into large scale farmers (in animal rearing,
vegetable farming, among others) in our region since they will be enlightened on some
innovative ways of farming. With an abundance of farm products, Youth will act as middle
men and women and engage trading these products across borders through online marketing
which will be taught during the training, and eventually creating employment.
Our team of IT experts will offer free to cheap branding services to those with already
existing businesses or startups which will enhance the value of products and increase gains,
from market sales.
Because of larger quantity production, pricing will be lower and making it affordable for
all individuals irrespective of their financial status.
With the current Ghana government warehouse development program, excess food staff
will be stocked in these warehouses which will make food products available at all seasons
because of the storage.
11. STEPS THAT WOULD BE TAKEN TO BEGIN IMPLEMENTATION
1. Organizing all stakeholders and informing them of the project and generating
timelines together for each project.
2. Initiating communication strategy to propagate the message to the targeted
youth through our partner radio stations and other stakeholder
3. Roll out the project, informing the trainers and trainee of the expected goals and
objectives and making available needed tools and equipment (booklets and exercise books

will be designed by our IT team).

4.Evaluators and supervisors with expertise in various areas will be allocated
duties to oversee effective execution of goals and objective
5. Putting up award schemes to motivate individuals who attain their target.

12.QUALITIES OUR TEAM POSSESS THAT WILL MAKE US ACHIEVE THIS GOAL
As youth organization we have members of the media fraternity who are part of our team
who will facilitate dissemination of information to the masses.
We have university lecturers in our team who will help with theoretical training of the
youth on how to write business, financial proposals, and policies of the planting for food
for jobs. We also have qualified Agric officers who will help in training the youth in
innovative farming and post-harvest loss management.
We have IT personnel who will help with the branding and marketing aspect of our
entrepreneurs, craftsmen and women.
Our Western North Women in Leadership team will mobilize women to enable total
participation of our women. While the past 4 participants of TV3 Ghana Most Beautiful
from our region who serve as our Brand Ambassadors of Western North Women in
Leadership and Entrepreneurship, will inform their funs about the projects.
We have a team of qualified health workers who will help in delivery first Aid when need
arises.
In terms of weakness, we have challenges with accommodation for trainers and trainees,
and means of transportation and basic equipment needed for the education.

13. REASONS WHY WE WOULD NEED THIS FUNDING

We believe Galamsey is on the rise in our region and our water bodies are being destroyed
and, in a way, youth are dropping out of school to engage in Galamsey. We also believe,
partaking in making Galamsey a thing of the past is a generational responsibility, which
must be done with all energy and resources.
Also, our solution and training in marketing and on farming will contribute to the
attainment of SDGs, African Union Agenda 2063. As we create employment and end

poverty, we will have enough food to feed our people and well export the excess through
the African Continental Free Trade Area.
