System Overview
1.1. Overview
This system is a radar system for vessels that complies with the performance standards
of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The system consists of a scanner
unit and a display unit. A scanner unit generates signals for transmission, transmits
and receives radio waves, and amplifies received signals. A display unit removes
unwanted waves and displays the radar image.
The radio waves transmitted via the system's magnetron transmitter are pulse
modulated waves in either 3 GHz (S band) or 9.4 GHz (X band).
In addition to the basic radar functions, the system features a number of functions that
support maritime safety, such as a radar track display function, a target tracking
function, and an automatic identification system (AIS) information display function.

1-14
The electrical schematic diagram for the system is shown in Fig. 1-1 .
The ship's DC power supply is input via a line filter on I/F circuit CMH2201 and a
circuit breaker to power supply circuit CBD-1665A, generating the required voltage.
Each power supply circuit is a highly efficient switching power supply circuit.
The system is equipped with overvoltage protection. If the input voltage exceeds DC42V,
power supply circuit CBD-1665A cuts power supply and if the input voltage exceeds
DC50V, the circuit breaker trips to prevent the excessive voltage from being applied to
the system. The setting for the input voltage is made on the power supply circuit
CBD-1665A.
The +12Vp power supply operates even when the operating unit is turned off. This
power supply is used in functions such as the control circuit of the power supply circuit
and the inter switch control function.
When the power switch of the operating unit is turned on, the power supply used in the
system is activated and outputs power at the following voltages:
+5V/+3.3V/+12V/-12V/monitor power, then the system starts. The +5V/+3.3V voltages
are used primarily by the control circuit ICs. The +12V/-12V voltages are primarily used
in the external interface circuit.
The power supply output relay for the scanner are turned on and off independently of
the power for the system itself. When the scanner unit power on control signal is input
from the inter switch unit from the inter switch function, the power supply output relay
for the scanner come on. Where the inter switch function is not used, these actions are
linked to the power switch of the operating unit.
Each power supply output has output over current protection, so that if there is a short
circuit of the load or the rated output is exceeded, protective functions are activated and
shut down the output.

Fig. 1-2 shows the function system diagram for the scanner unit.
When the power supply in the display unit starts, the power supply circuit in the
scanner unit activates and power is supplied to the circuits in the scanner unit. Once
the power supply starts, the CPU in the interface circuit starts and perform initial
settings. Then the preheating of the magnetron begins, and the scanner unit waits for a
communication signal to be sent from the display unit. When it receives the
communication signal from the display unit, a communication link is established, and
the scanner unit is subsequently controlled from the display unit.
While the magnetron is preheating, the interface circuit sets the operation of the
various circuits in the scanner unit according to the initial setting values it receives
from the display unit. When the preheating is complete, the scanner unit notifies the
display unit. When the user performs the operation to start transmission, the display
unit sends the transmission start command via the communication line and the scanner
unit starts the rotation of the antenna motor and begins transmission.
A transmission timing pulse is generated in the interface circuit, which is input to the
modulator switching circuit for high voltage switching. The pulse transformer further
increases the voltage of the high-voltage pulse, and the high voltage is applied to the
magnetron. In this way, pulse-modulated microwaves are obtained. The pulse width and
the pulse-repetition frequency are specified by means of control commands from the
display unit.
The radar wave passes through a duplexer circuit that uses a circulator and then
through a rotary joint, before being transmitted into the air from the antenna.
A signal reflected from a target is input from the antenna to the receiving block using
the duplexer function. The received signal is amplified before being converted to the IF
frequency, after which logarithmic detection is performed and the signal becomes a
radar video signal. If the receiving tuning function is set to the auto mode, the interface
circuit processes the received signal and automatically controls the tuning voltage so as
to match the optimum local frequency.
When the interface circuit turns on the scanner unit relay, DC power is supplied to the
motor driver circuit and the antenna motor rotates. If the safety switch is off, the power
supplied to the motor driver is forcibly shut off, stopping the rotation of the antenna
motor. The beam azimuth of the antenna is detected by the encoder.
1-17
The received radar video signal, the transmission timing signal, and the antenna
rotation signal are all sent to the display unit. The radar video signal is an unprocessed
log-compressed signal. The antenna rotation signal is an incremental signal which uses
the 2048 pulse/rotation pulse and the azimuth reference pulse.
When a set period of time has elapsed after the communication signal from the display
unit has stopped, the interface circuit switches to the protection mode and forcibly stops
transmission and the rotation of the antenna.

Fig. 1-3 function system diagram of scanner unit
The functional system diagram of the system's display unit is shown in Fig. 1-3 .
After the power is turned on, the local CPU in the radar process circuit CDC-1332, the
graphic CPU, the CPU in the AIS processing circuit CDC-1325 and the operation CPU
in the operation circuit CCK-979 are released from their reset status, perform the
initialization of the respective hardware items to which they are connected, and wait for
control commands from the main CPU.
The main CPU is released from the reset status and initializes the radar image/display
function before initializing the entire system. First, it send initial settings commands to
the local CPU to initialize the radar signal settings, and it sends a communication
initialization command to the operating unit CPU to initialize the operation functions.
The main CPU also writes a program to the memory in the DSP of the ARPA process
circuit to start the DSP and issue an initialization command to the CPU in the AIS
process circuit to initialize the AIS process circuit.
After that, the main CPU sets the internal status according to the sensor data input
from the various communication lines, such as the GYRO I/F and GPS, and issues an
initialization command to the scanner unit via the communication line to initialize the
scanner unit. This concludes the initialization of the system.
B. Circuit Functions
The GYRO I/F unit NCT-59A processes the gyro signal, which is in the synchro or step
format, calculates the true azimuth, and sends the true azimuth data to the radar
process circuit at regular intervals using serial communication. As long as the GYRO
I/F unit is receiving the gyro signal, it is supplied with power and the CPU operates
even if the display unit power is turned off. Therefore, even if the display unit power is
turned off, the GYRO I/F circuit can continue to calculate the true azimuth.
1-21
The operating circuit CPU detects the operating status of the switches and dials of the
operation panel and sends the operation data to the main CPU through the
communication line.
The radar signal process circuit in the radar process circuit digitalizes the radar signals
it receives from the scanner unit (the radar video signal, the transmission timing signal,
and the antenna rotation signal), suppresses unwanted waves, and draws and displays
a radar image in accordance with the display screen.
The ARPA process circuit receives the radar signal data, with the unwanted waves
suppressed by the radar signal process circuit, and performs target tracking. The
results of the tracking are sent to the main CPU in the radar process circuit.
1-22
The AIS process circuit processes the AIS communication data input from an external
device, manages the database of all the AIS targets received, and send the information
on important targets to the main CPU. Based on this information, the main CPU
displays the AIS targets and necessary information on the radar screen.
The I/F circuit contains a built-in interface circuit for the external equipment, performs
level conversion for the various signals, and connects to the radar process circuit.
The terminal board circuit is an interface between the I/F circuit and external device.
The radar signals sent by the scanner unit are input to the radar process circuit via the
I/F circuit. Unwanted waves are suppressed and a radar image suited to the display
screen is displayed.
The switches and dials on the operation unit can be used to change the settings of the
signal processing in the radar process circuit and the screen display, the results of which
are immediately reflected in the radar image display.
The main CPU of the radar process circuit automatically detects, when the system is
started, whether or not there is an inter switch. If there is, it operates in the inter
1-23
switch mode. If there is no inter switch, or if the inter switch or its cable is damaged,
preventing the inter switch from being detected, the main CPU automatically operates
in the standalone mode.

Replacement Procedure
(1)-69
(ア) Scanner Unit
① Precautions for replacing parts in the scanner unit
Keep the following precautions in mind to avoid injuries when you replace parts.
Before starting part replacement, make sure all power supplies for all radars (when you are
using more than one radar) are turned off. Shut off the circuit breaker for the main power
supply.
Wear gloves to avoid injury when replacing parts. Be careful to ensure safety when working at
a height, including measures to ensure that no tools or parts are dropped.
Perform the part replacement work where the ship is stable, such as in a harbor.
Be careful that the radio wave emission part, which may rotate in the wind, does not hit a
maintenance engineer.
Do not replace any parts when the radiator is rotating by the wind or by the hands. There is a
danger risk of getting an electric shock. Because the motor generates high voltage when the
radiator is rotating, even if the power is turned off.
[Required tools]
・Tools for removing the cover from the scanner unit
A wrench (width across flats 13 mm, for M8 screws)
(1)-70
[Replacement procedure]
Bow side
(1) Before starting part replacement work, turn off the
safety switch of the scanner unit.
(3) Follow the procedure provided in the following sections to replace the necessary parts. Be
careful not to lose removed screws and metal fittings.
(4) After replacing the parts, return the pedestal cover to its original place and turn on the
safety switch (do not forget to put the cover back on).
Make sure that there is no foreign matter or dust adhered to the gasket when you put the
cover on.
(5) Turn on the radar power supply and check that the system works properly.

The antenna rotation signal is not being output from the scanner unit. When
this message appears, radar transmission is forcibly stopped.
There are two possible cases: 1) the motor is not rotating, and 2) the rotation
signal is not being output.
If the motor is not rotating and wind blow very strong, it remains possible that is
not a problem with the motor driving system. The radiator is subjected to
external
force of wind (corresponding wind speed is greater than 51.5m/s) that exceed
the
ability to drive the scanner unit, the scanner unit stop to drive the motor.
Because
a built-in overload protection circuit is activated. In this case, the alarm is
appeared, but the equipment is not faulty. The radar transmit normally when
the
wind has calm down less than or equal to 51.5m/s.

(ウ) Troubleshooting Examples
① Internal circuits
• The display appears and disappears even though the radar is operating
properly.
Problem location → Solution
Input voltage The input voltage could be too low. Check the voltage.
• The system does not start when the power switch is pressed.
Problem location → Solution
Input voltage It is possible that the input voltage is high, causing the protective
circuit to operate. Check the voltage.
• You cannot move the cursor even using the track ball.
Problem location → Solution
Setting Check that the operating mode is not set to EBL or VRM. Press
and hold EBL to return to the normal mode.
Track ball If you cannot operate the cursor even using EBL or VRM, replace
4)-49
the track ball.
• A line that you do not remember inputting appears on the radar screen.
Problem location → Solution
MOB You may have pressed the MOB key. Try pressing and holding the
MOB key.
4)-50
Connection The operating unit could be connected to the AUX connector
rather than J4. Check the connection.
4)-51
② External equipment
• The problem could be the polarity of the connection, the baud rate setting,
the usage settings of external navigation equipment, or the fan-out of the
output equipment.
Problem location → Solution
Fanout of output Have you connected more than one device to the same port of the
equipment external equipment? If so, it is possible that you have exceeded
the output capacity of the external equipment, preventing the
signal from arriving correctly. Follow the specifications for the
external equipment.
4)-52
Cannot display true azimuth
Content
• There is always some error displayed in such cases, such as Gyro I/F
(Data), Gyro I/F (GYRO), or Heading (Data). It could be that some setting is
incorrect or that there is a problem with the azimuth sensor.
Problem location → Solution
GYRO (DATA) In a step-type gyro, if the signal amplitude is low it may cause an
STEP error. It is often the case that there are a number of devices
connected to the same port, exceeding the output capacity of
the gyro compass. If this is the case, it may happen that the
potential of the LOW level of the output signal rises. The input
specifications for the GYRO I/F circuit require a LOW level of
±2.5 V or less. The HIGH level must be ±20 V or more.
GYRO (DATA) There is a type of synchro-type gyro that has a rating of 24 Vac for
SYNCHRO energizing side. For this type of gyro, you will need to switch
TB401 - TB403. See Section 2.5.2 for details.
If errors continuously occur, the situation may improve if you set
No. 5 of DIP switch S4 in the GYRO I/F circuit to ON. However,
this S4(5) setting only extends the time it takes to determine an
error, so it does not resolve the fundamental problem on the
gyro side.
