Symbolic representation of welds

1. Scope
This standard covers the symbols for welds and the method of symbolic representation of welds.

2. Symbols for Welding Portions

The symbols for welding portions shall consist of basic symbols, supplementary symbols and symbols
for graphical representation as specified below.

2.1 Basic Symbols

The basic symbols which indicate the forms of welding portion shall be as shown in Table 1.

2.3 Symbols for Graphical Representation

Symbols indicated in Table 3 may be used for graphical representation of welds along with other
symbols specified above.

3. Symbolic Representation Method

Basic symbols and supplementary symbols along with numerical values showing dimensions and
other information shall be indicated close to the explanatory lines. Graphical symbols shall be
indicated directly at the joints on drawings.

3.1 Explanatory Line

Explanatory lines, which schematically represent a weld, consist of a reference line, an arrow and a
tail with the last being optional. (See Figs. 1 and 2.)
(1) The reference line shall basically be a horizontal line with an arrow attached to its either end.
(2) The arrow shall be a straight line attached to the reference line preferably at 60 . However,
when one edge of a joint must be specified (e.g. the edge to be grooved in single or double bevel
groove welding or single J groove or double J groove welding, or the edge to be curved in flare
single bevel groove or flare K groove welding), place a reference line on the side of the joint to
be grooved or curved and add an arrow with its shaft drawn in broken line (Figs. 3 and 4) and its
head pointing to the said edge. If necessary, multiple arrows may be attached to a reference
line, provided that all are extended from the same end of the reference line (Fig. 5).

3.2 Indication Method for Basic Symbol

Indicate the basic symbol below the reference line when the joint is on the side that the arrow on the
drawing is pointing to ("arrow side" or "near side", see Fig. 6); indicate the basic symbol above the
reference line when the joint is on the other side of the arrow ("other side" or "far side", see Fig. 7).

3.3 Indication Method for Supplementary Symbol and Others

Indicate the supplementary symbols, dimensions, strength and other welding requirements on the
same side of the reference line as the basic symbol. (See Figs. 8 and 9.)
Even when arrow is drawn either from right or left end of the reference line, positions of the
supplementary symbols for weld symbols do not change except the tail part.
(1) Indicate the supplementary symbols showing contour and finish method in the space
corresponding to the weld surface.
(2) Indicate the supplementary symbol specifying all-round peripheral welding at the juncture of the
reference line and the arrow.
(3) At the tail, indicate root radius of the groove, welding method, supplementary symbols for
non-destructive testing specified by TSZ6201G, and any other special instructions and
specifications.
(4) Standard location for numerical values specifying dimensions, strength and other information
shall be as shown in Figs. 8 to 10. Numerical values to be indicated on drawings are shown in
Table 4.
