Topic 1: " The lived experiences of Level IV Tourism students of Dominican College during

COVID19 Pandemic

What do I care about?

The current pandemic forced most students to

stay back at their homes and continue learning

through online modes. With the advancement

of Technology, online learning has been

supplementing traditional learning and has

emerged as an imperative paradigm of

modern education; this mode is unrestricted by

time or place, thus offering personalized and

flexible learning experiences to students

(Adel, 2017). The online learning mode has

become popular because of its time efficiency

and capacity to serve a wide range of student

types (e.g., full-time working and long-distance

students). It also increases information

retention (Li & Lalani, 2020) and partially

helps educational institutions to remain

competitive and collaborative in a globally

sustainable environment (Adel, 2017).

Having more than 250 million students, Indian

students have remained at the houses without

offline academic activities and socialization

since March 2021. Schools, colleges, and

universities widely used online Video

conferencing Platforms Like Google Meet,

Zoom, and Microsoft teams to engage with

their students.

Studies state that students are comfortable

with online classes and are getting enough

support from teachers but they do not believe

that online classes will replace traditional

classroom teaching. It also finds that teachers

are facing difficulties in conducting online

classes due to a lack of proper training and

development for doing online classes.

Technical issues are the major problem for the

effectiveness of online classes(Kulal & Nayak,

2020).

Tourism and Hospitality students, unlike

students from other study areas, facing some

specific issues such as are afraid of the future

of the Tourism Industry and anxiety about their

personal goals in the industry.

What do I know or should know about the topics I  What are the lived experiences of level 4
chose? students during pandemic.

In terms of:

-Academics

-Mental health

-Physical Health

Why do I argue my chosen topics?  To have an awareness what are the lived

experiences of tourism students during

pandemic and to use for future references.

What do previous studies say about my chosen

As the world is facing an unprecedented global
topics?
health, social and economic emergency with

the COVID-19 pandemic, travel, and tourism is

among the most affected sectors , with

airplanes on the ground, hotels closed, and

travel restrictions put in place in virtually all

countries around the world(International

Tourism And Covid-19, 2021)

The impact of COVID-19 on the travel tourism

industry will be incomparable to the

consequence of the previous pandemic

episodes such as SARS, Zika Virus, Ebola,

and Foot and Mouth Disease (Škare et al.,

2021). These negative impacts of the

pandemic adversely affecting the mental well-

being of Tourism and hospitality students

globally. In 2019, when global Travel &

Tourism was thriving and generating one in

four of all new jobs worldwide, the sector

contributed 10.6% (334 million) jobs

globally. However last year, as the pandemic

ripped through the heart of Travel & Tourism,

nearly 62 million jobs were lost, representing a

drop of 18.5%, leaving just 272 million

employed across the industry globally (WTTC

Report, 2021)

All the above statistics push students into a

dilemma about fortune in the tourism and

hospitality industry for at least a few years. In

addition, the ongoing pandemic has caused

severe disruptions for the hospitality and

tourism education sector (Zhong et al., 2021).

In past crises, hospitality and tourism

programs were forced to suspend classes,

destination visits, internships, and job

replacement (Law, 2005). Many courses,

career engagement activities that students

considered necessary, and other academic

activities such as advising and site tours were

either temporarily halted or converted to online

or mixed modes (Dopson et al., 2021).

Distance learning and digital technologies are

hardly new practices in hospitality and tourism

education (Goh & King, 2020), and some

research found that students were satisfied

overall with such learning modes (Annaraud &

Singh; 2017; Patiar et al., 2017).

Topic 2: The effects of multilingual communication during discussion in tourism students of

Dominican College

What do I care about? We use language every day to communicate,

express ourselves, and absorb information. It

is the lens through which we understand and

engage with the world— socially, culturally,

academically, and professionally. It gives

form to thought, is linked to memory and

experience, and shapes our sense of self. In

many ways, language is inseparable from

identity.

While language is integral to fruitful

communication and collaboration, non-

dominant linguistic identities are often

overshadowed by dominant ones. We adapt,

or try to adapt, to communicate in the

language of our employer, our funders, our

colleagues, our supervisors, and our

teachers. We may do so without considering

what is lost or misconstrued by not being able

to express ourselves in our primary

language(s).

Such an unexamined approach to language

can lead to unintended consequences that

transform communication from an interactive

exchange of ideas into one-sided

transmissions, partial misunderstandings, and

even conflict.

What do I know or should know about the topics I  What are the negative and positive effects

chose? when using multilingual as medium of

instructions in tourism students of

Dominican College

Why do I argue my chosen topics?  To know what are effective language and

dialect when communicating to students.

What do previous studies say about my chosen  There are many studies and research

topics? that support the case that multilingual

individuals have an edge throughout

life. Multilingualism has been proven

to help a child develop superior

reading and writing skills, multilingual

children have overall better analytical,

social, and academic skills than their

unilingual peers.

Topic 3: The impact of blended learning to tourism students in Dominican College

What do I care about?  The development and innovation of

academic institution is evolving in a global

era because 21st century requires skills

needed to acquire by the teacher and

learners to cope with the demands of the

global education that each country should

address. Blended learning is defines as

combination of eLearning (through an

online class session) and face to face class

session in facilitation of classes offers an

innovation of how teaching and learning

can help learners acquire the required

learning outcomes.

What do I know or should know about the topics I  What are the impacts of blended learning

chose?
to tourism students

What do I argue my chosen topics?  The impacts, effects of blended learning,

positive and negative impacts and also the

effectiveness.

What do previous studies say about my chosen Blended learning is a teaching

topics? approach that positively impacts

students' learning and teachers'

instruction. Through individual

interaction with students, teachers can

see the learning needs of students,

thereby allowing them to adjust or

design lesson plans to suit students'

learning progress (Attard and Holmes,

2020; Barros et al., 2017; Kerzˇič et al.,

2019; Poon, 2013). Attard and

Holmes's (2020) research

demonstrated that teachers who

participated in the survey could

enhance students' access to math

learning materials through digital

resources. LMS enables teachers to

access different representations of

mathematics and apply alternative

teaching methods through the

innovation of learning spaces and

teaching contexts (Attard and Holmes,

2020). At the same time, blended

learning contributes to teachers' ability

to apply information and digital

technology to teaching (Attard and

Holmes, 2020; Kashefi et al., 2012).

Topic 4: The challenges and opportunities of OJT tourism students in different companies

What do I care about?  The internship program is the most

crucial supplemental training for

students in practical skills, knowledge,

and attitude necessary to adapt to the

changing industrial world of hospitality

and tourism. This exploratory study is

to investigate the challenges that

bachelor students of Hospitality and

Tourism Management (H&T) often

experience and need to overcome

themselves through internship

programs at enterprises in hotel,

restaurant, travel, and tourism setting

in Vietnam. Data from 400 valid

answers out of 442 respondents who

have experienced their internship

programs through direct and online

questionnaires was analyzed by

SPSS to identify the industry-specific

difficulties that trainees must

overcome in order to attain

satisfaction with the internship term.

The results show the main challenges

are communication and conduct,

working hours, problem-solving skills,

self-confidence, supervision, and

working environment but physical

requirements. he conclusions help not

only future student interns for better

preparation but also indicate the

Hospitality and Tourism Training

Schools and industry enterprises the

preparedness for students in

psychology and skills to experience

the most satisfactory and fruitful

internship, which plays essential role

in attracting talents to remain in H&T

industry and mark the effectiveness of

university training program.

What do I know or should know about the topics I  We need to know the challenges and

chose? opportunities of OJT tourism students in

different companies for us to have an

awareness what we’re going to do and

what do we need to expect. As tourism

student we need to be ready physically,

mentally and also financially to finish our

OJT.

What do I argue my chosen topics?  The different challenges and opportunities

of OJT tourism students in different

companies .

What do previous studies say about my chosen

To be students of Hospitality and Tourism
topics?
(H&T) Management field, all need to

undergo an internship program from 2 to 6

months at enterprises in the industry

applied on their own or recommended by

the academy. The working environment of

Vietnam – a country among ten countries

possessing highest rate of tourism growth

in the last 5 years (Le, Citation2020)

requires students highly on the ability to

practice and integrate into the industrial

environment, especially environment at

well-known brands or chains.

As the tourism industry in Vietnam is still in

thirst of high-quality human resources (Nga

& Ngan, Citation2018), the success of a

student internship program becomes more

important. Besides the support role of

educators and employers, the perceptions

of students toward the challenges that they

themselves should overcome are

necessary. “Internship satisfaction” has

been designed and involved quantitative

method with questionnaire form by

Seyitoglu and Yirik (Citation2015) of

University Nebraska (which was filled by

305 Turkish tourism faculty students), and

before that by other researchers such as in

Hongkong (Chen & Shen, Citation2012)

(employed data collection from students at

twenty universities) and (Lam &

Ching, Citation2007) (a total of 307 usable

questionnaires were returned), etc.

According to Seyitoglu and Yirik

(Citation2015), internship satisfaction

contributes to positive professional

development and industrial perception,

which is the expectation of both the

academy and enterprise. Another study by

Hussien and Lopa (Citation2018) on a

survey of 100 internship hospitality

students in the US., also concludes that

interns’ initiative, as well as the academic

support and enterprise support,

contributes significant contribution to

student internship satisfaction. Most of the

prior studies have used the quantitative

method as the questionnaire for data

collection and analysis. Therefore, this

study applies mixed methods to heighten

and broaden the implication understanding

and improving possible support for student

internship satisfaction and better career

intention in the hospitality industry.

Many papers published though, there are

some gaps leading to this research. With

the country that English yet to be a second

language like Vietnam, the working

environment in H&T using English in

communication with guests may lead to

lack of confidence and limitation in

communication of students. While the

internship satisfaction marks their growth

from academy learning and a good start for

future career decision (Tse, Citation2010),

most students admitted that they have

some stresses with seemingly simple

matter, during the working period till the

end of internship because of new

environment and arising situations. The

pressure of working full-time in a new busy

environment, in a professional or branded

enterprise brings challenges that students

must face right from the time of their

entrance interview. Students are required

to follow the working schedule and

discipline of the corporate and take over

the responsibilities of an employee dealing

with customers and with deadlines to fulfill.

Many students wish if only they had better

notion of the challenges and been

prepared better they would have caught up

the rhythm faster for a more successful

internship term.

Secondly, for former internship satisfaction

researches, the effect of student career

perception, academic support, and

enterprise support toward internship

satisfaction is also recognized with the

individual and organizational challenges,

they, however, have a notable lack of

exploration on the challenges students

need to take efforts better from their side

to stay in this industry instead of only

expecting from outsiders. Therefore the

expectation on pay, commute, and job

characteristics (Hussien &

Lopa, Citation2018) are not mentioned in

the scaling of this research.

Thirdly, although Chinomona and Surujlal

(Citation2012) point out the necessities of

student internship programs (e.g.,

enhancing theoretical knowledge and

developing skills and experiences within

the H&T settings) for applying proper

knowledge, skills, and attitude which has

been prepared at school in the previous

internship, the number of internship

satisfaction studies in the H&T industry is

limited. Besides, there have been a lot of

studies relevant to internship programs

and determinants or satisfaction of

students in many countries but there is

rarely a study in Vietnam about this,

therefore the objective of this research is to

identify the challenges at the internship

programs for a satisfactory learning and

training in Vietnam, for the universities to

prepare better their students for this hard

period and for the H&T enterprises to

share the worries and expectations of the

academies and students toward them.

Topic 5: Future Flight Attendants: From the eyes of level 4 students in Dominican College

What do I care about? Imagine travelling the world as part of your

job, visiting new places, meeting new people,

and learning new things every day. You can

literally broaden your horizons if you become

a flight attendant!

Aspiring flight attendants undergo rigorous

training and exams before they can work in

plane.. With so many aspiring to become

flight attendants, airline companies are strict

and meticulous about their standards for

hiring cabin crews.

Still, while competition for a flight attendant’s

job is tough, you can still gain an advantage

over others. This is by enrolling yourself in an

aviation school. Here are some of the things

you’ll learn to give you an edge over the

competition:

Flight Attendants or Cabin Crew are among the

professional airline personnel whose

primaryresponsibility is to ensure the safety and

comfort of passengers aboard an aircraft. This paper

is aimed to

determine the alignment of the College of

International Tourism and Hospitality Management’s

Tourism

Curriculum to the employment qualifications on both

domestic and international flight attendants. Theresult

of this study may be utilized to further enhance the

existing curriculum to suit the

employment standards of both local and

international airline companies. Moreover,

this study may serve as a guide fortourism

students to confidently pursue a career of flight

attendant in the future. A descriptive-correlationdesign

was used in the conduct of the study. Questionnaire

was used as main data gathering instrumentutilizing

percentage, frequency and weighted mean as

statistical tool. A commercial airline is a companythat

transports passengers via air wherein professionals

are hired to effectively deliver ultimate satisfactionto

the traveling public. With the in depth training that

each company provides, including service, safety

andemergency, fist aid and others, trainees must be

fully equipped with the right attitude and learnings

whichcould be acquired in a university offering quality

education. As flight attendants are among the front

linersof an airline company, one is expected to

properly represent the company in the eyes of the

public at alltime (anonuevo, 2016)

What do I know or should know about the topics I

chose?

What do I argue my chosen topics?

What do previous studies say about my chosen There is a wide range of career opportunities in

topics? the tourism and hospitality industry. There are

hotels, holiday centers, quasi hotels, cruise ships,

bars and restaurants under free-standing

hospitality businesses. On the other hand, there is

also the hospitality in leisure venues which is

composed of casinos, bingo clubs, night clubs,

cinemas, theatres, sports stadia, theme parks,

attractions and health clubs. There is also the

hospitality in travel venues such as airports, rail

stations, bus stations, ferry terminals, aeroplanes,

trains and ferries and last is the subsidized

hospitality such as workplaces, health care,

education, military, custodial and retailers

(Slattery, 2002). The United World Tourism

Organization (UNWTO) predicts that it will triple

in size by the year 2020, becoming one of the

largest industries in the world. This growth will

provide many knowledge, skills and attitude that

the future hospitality managers require to

succeed (Swiss Education Group). The hospitality

industry is one of the world’s most dynamic

industries and continues to grow year after year.

It has a wide ranging category of fields within the

service industry which includes restaurants,

lodging, transportation, theme parks, event

planning, cruise line, and other fields within the

tourism industry (Terry, 2009). It is also one of the

most diversified industries in the world because

of the wide number of different occupations and

professions involved in it. According to the United

Nations Industrial Development Organization

(UNIDO) (2002), competency is a set of skills

related knowledge and attributes that allow

individual to successfully perform a task or an

activity within a specific function or job. It simply

means being able to perform what you have

learned or the learning outcomes.
