MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS

In Britain, doctors, also known as medical practitioners, have to be qualified (=have a

university degree). A doctor who treat patients (as opposed to one who only does
research) is called a clinician. A doctos who provides primary care for patients is
a general practitioner (GP) or family doctor. GPs usually work in a general practice.

MEDICAL SPECIALTIES AND JOBS

There are two main branches of medicine: surgery and internal medicine. Doctors who
practice these branches are called surgeons and physicians, respectively.
Medical specialists are experts in certain fields of medicine. They treat specific parts of
the body, such as the back or the brain, or they specialize in certain diseases, such as
cancer. Family doctors have a list of local specialists and can help patients choose the
right specialist for each medical problem. In many cases specialists require
a referral from a family doctor before they will see a patient.
