In this research task you will explore how esports is organized and structured
in the UK.

improve growth and knowledge along with welcomeness to the sport. The government also claim esports has the
potential to really strengthen the UK.

How is esports defined under UK law?

In the uk Esports is defined as a “game” under uk laws such as chess and bridge. This differs from other countries
involved in the international esports scene as some consider it a sport rather than a game. There is a grey area
surrounding the legislation around how and whether esports should be promoted, funded and endorsed the way it is.
Many people believe it is just gaming on a higher level whereas some take it as an actual sport equivalent to that of
football or rugby.

What role do the British Esports Association play?

They act as the national body for esports in the UK. They are a not-for-profit national body set up in 2016. Their main
goal was purely to promote esports to a wider audience and potentially have more investors and business plans flood in
for not only the esports body but the government too. The British esports association also intend to inspire future talent
meaning they expect the industry to thrive and grow from here on out meaning the support garnered now is very
positive on all fronts not only for esports but the uk too.

Esports has had a presence in gaming for many years with different competitive challenges, tournaments and events
going all the way back to 1972. Esports fits into the gaming industry as it drives support and notoriety for certain
competitive games very effectively. Esports, streaming and gaming all had a great boost in the mainstream media
scene. Esports has an effect on upcoming games and streaming services (twitch, kick) as developers add game modes
and mechanics that allow and endorse competitive play. For example, many modern games such as valorant, rocket
league, overwatch 2 and Fortnite all include a ranked game mode for anyone to play, potentially leading to them
proving their skill and winning great prizes.

What tournaments take place in the UK?

With the esports scene rising in popularity in the UK, it is only right for some tournaments to be present. The UK
welcomes and hosts several tournaments with the most notable being insomnia gaming festival which is held at the NEC
in Birmingham. Another well known event is Epic. LAN which takes place in no same location annually, it is a highly
esteemed tournament allowing people to compete for up to £20,000 in games such as Fortnite, CS:GO and rocket league
as of recent. A new highly supported tournament is the Commonwealth Esports Championships that allows players to
represent their countries meaning this is and international event with a large prize pool due to the backing from the
Commonwealth games Federation, this event is held in the ICC in Birmingham.
