STRUCTURES
Engr. Glean Mark B. Perdon
Design of one way slab
Given: Loads, type of slab, fc’,fy,Wc
Req’d: t, size and spacing of main bars and
temperature bars

General Procedure:

1.Determine the minimum slab thickness t using table for minimum

thickness of non prestressed beams and one way slab. This thickness
should be at least 75 mm
2. Calculate the design moment Mu
3. Compute the effective depth d
d = t – covering – ½ bar diameter ( minimum of 12 mm)
Design of one way slab
4. Compute design constants: As > Asmin
pmin = k k = 0.0018 if fy = 415
k = 0.002 if fy = 275
k = 0.0018(400)/fy if fy > 415
Asmin = kbh

5. Solve for As using the loads

6. Solve for the spacing of bars
7. Check for maximum spacing of main bars, s <= 3t or 450 mm
8. Solve for Temperature bars
9. Check for maximum spacing of temp bars, s <= 5t or 450 mm
MINIMUM THICKNESS OF NON-PRESTRESSED BEAMS AND ONE WAY SLABS
UNLESS DEFLECTIONS ARE COMPUTED

Span Length L in millimeters

Values given shall be used directly for members with normal density concrete
(Wc = 2300 kg/m3) and Grade 60 (415 MPa) reinforcement. For other conditions, the values shall be modified as
follows:

For structural lightweight concrete having unit weights of 1500 -2000 kg/m3 the values shall be multiplied by (1.65
– 0.0005 Wc) but not less than 1.09, where Wc is the unit mass in kg/m3.

For fy other 415 MPa, the values shall be multiplied by

( 0.4 +fy/700)
Problem:
Design a one way slab having a simple span of 3.0 m. The slab is to carry a uniform
dead load of 2.5 KPa and uniform live load of 4.2 kPa. fc’ = 27.6 MPa, fy = 275 MPa
for main bars and temperature bars. Use 12 mm dia. Bars.
Problem:
Design a 4 m long one way slab with one end discontinuous. The slab is to carry a
uniform dead load of 3.6 KPa and uniform live load of 4.0 kPa. fc’ = 20.7 MPa, fy = 415
MPa for main bars and fy = 276 MPa for temperature bars. Use 12 mm dia bars.
