B.Tech. 3rd Semester Mid Semester Examination, November, 2021

Subject: Mathematics-III (MA-2101)

Full Marks : 30 Time : 45 minutes

Answer any FIVE questions. Only the first FIVE questions answered by the candidate will be evaluated.

1. State and prove Bayes’ theorem. [2+4=6]

2. In a precision bombing attack there is 50% chance that any one bomb will strike the target.
Two direct hits are required to destroy the target completely. How many bombs must be dropped
to give a 99% or better chance of completely destroying the target? [6]

3. Each coefficients in the equation ax 2 + bx + c = 0 are determined by throwing an ordinary

regular die. Find the probability that the equation will have real roots. [6]

4. A random variable X has the following probability mass function:

𝑥 ∶ 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
2 2 2
𝑃 (𝑋 = 𝑥 ) ∶ 0 𝑘 2𝑘 2𝑘 3𝑘 𝑘 2𝑘 7𝑘 + 𝑘

(a) Find k.
(b) Evaluate 𝑃 (𝑋 ≥ 6), 𝑃(0 < 𝑋 < 5).
(c) Determine the distribution function of X. [2+2+2=6]

5. State and prove Tchebycheff’s inequality for a continuous random variable. [2+4=6]

6. (a) If 𝑆 = {(𝑥, 𝑦) ∈ 𝑅2 , |𝑥 | ≤ 5}, then show that 𝑆 is a convex set.

(b) Find all the basic solutions of the following system of linear equations. Identify if there
is any degenerate basic solutions and basic feasible solutions.
𝑥1 + 2𝑥2 + 𝑥3 = 4
2𝑥1 + 𝑥2 + 5𝑥3 = 5 [2+(2+1+1)]
7. (a) Express the following LPP into its standard form:
𝑀𝑎𝑥 𝑧 = 2𝑥1 − 𝑥2 + 𝑥3
subject to
4𝑥1 + 𝑥2 + 𝑥3 = 6
7𝑥1 + 3𝑥2 + 2𝑥3 ≥ 20
4𝑥1 + 7𝑥2 − 3𝑥3 ≤ 10
𝑥1 ≥ 0, 𝑥2 ≥ 0, 𝑥3 ≥ 0.

(b) 𝑥1 = 2, 𝑥2 = 1, 𝑥3 = 3 be a feasible solution of the equations

4𝑥1 + 2𝑥2 − 3𝑥3 = 1
6𝑥1 + 4𝑥2 − 5𝑥3 = 1.
Reduce the above feasible solution to a basic feasible solution.
