PIPE SIZING METHODS

❖ TRADITIONAL METHOD (FLOWRATE INTERSECTION POINT IN SIZING CHARTS)

1. Each pipe material have a friction loss chart
2. Enter the chart with the flow rate (input) and the velocity/friction limitations, then you will get size & friction
❖ EASIER & QUICKER METHOD (FOLLOW RECOMMENDED FLOW VALUES FOR PIPE SIZE GIVEN BY ASHRAE)
1. Check your piping system flow consideration, is it fixed flow or variable flow.?
2. Enter the respective table and knowing the gpm you will get the proposed size
❖ SOFTWARE SIZING (MCQUAY PIPE SIZER)
1. Enter gpm & tentative size, check friction & velocity
2. Adjust size till you reach acceptable velocity & friction limitations

CHILLED WATER PUMP SIZING EXAMPLE

PUMP TOTAL HEAD LOSS Htot. = Hstatic + Hdynamic

CHW PUMP HEAD CALCULATIONS STEPS

1. Pumps in CHW system can be either : closed system (primary, secondary) or open system (cooling tower)
2. In closed hydronic systems (primary & secondary), static head = zero
3. Closed system total head loss = total dynamic head loss that pump should overcome for the most critical path
4. Open system total head loss = (Static lift + pressure head) + total dynamic head loss that pump should overcome
5. Dynamic head = [ sum of friction loss in (pipes + fittings & valves + terminal units/equip.) ] x [110 - 120% factor of safety]
Where:
▪ Pipe pressure loss [ft] = design friction value [ft/100ft] x pipe length [ft] x 100
▪ Fittings pressure loss = equivalent length of straight pipe (tables) x pipe design friction value [ft/100ft] x 100
▪ Valves pressure loss = PD In Feet = (Flow Rate/ Rated Cv)2 X 2.31 (British units)
▪ Terminal unit or equip. pressure loss is obtained from catalogue
▪ Static lift = elevation difference (highest point of piping – pump impeller centerline)
