OPERATION: © Engine parts and set-bolts for tightness ¢ Vebelt for proper tension © Engine oil and cooling water for proper level * Dynamometer parts for lubrication . * Fan should be dismounted © To start the engine, turn the fuel lever to the non- injection position under decompression and actuate the starter to let the engine idle for about 20 seconds. Then check as follows: 1) Remove the oil outlet pipe of the turbocharger to make sure oil is flowing aut of the pipe. 2) Make sure the pointer of the oil pressure gauge ‘swings in normal condition. Note: Never run the starting motor longer than 20 seconds, CHECK THE FOLLOWINGS DURING OPERATION Lubricant: ‘© The oil level must be between the markings “L" and “HI on the oil level gauge. © The oil pressure must be within 1.6 to 4.5 kg/em* © Chock oil for water. Coolant: © Replenish coolant as required, even after starting the engine to keep the cooling system filled with the ‘coolant, end bleed the cooling system, © The coolant tomperature must fall within the range of 75 to 90°C, Color of exhaust Check for leakage of water, oll and compressed gas. Check for unusual sound, Check for loose clamping parts. ‘Check for abnormal flow-by. Checks after runningin © Check the oil of the oil filter. Wash foreign matter ‘away if any. Replace oil, iit is too dirty. IF there is ‘any metal grit in oll, check the cause or source. ‘¢ Recheck the valves for proper clearence, 155-4 SERIES PREPARATION INSTALLING THE ENGINE ON THE DYNAMOMETER STAND Place the engine on the dynamometer stand, and secure ‘the disk to the flywheel with more than six bolts (612, P = 1,75). Tighton the engine setbolts, when the posi: tion of the stand is adjusted in all directions, that is, upward and downward, right and left, and forward and backward and the stand is secured in place in parallel with the dynamometer. The eccentricity of the flanges fon the engine dynamometer sides must be within 0.13 mm, maximum reading on the dial indicator, when flexible joints are used. (Measuring accuracy: 1%) Fool tank urate 10 Encine © Air Feed Thermometer 12-403 ® TESTING AND ADJUSTING ADJUSTING FUEL INJECTION TIMING ADJUSTING FUEL INJECTION TIMING ADJUSTING THE FUEL INJECTION TIMING © Turn the crankshaft in the direction of rotation to set the No, 1 cylinder piston to TDC on the ‘compression stroke. ‘Align the pointer with the 1.4 Top merk on the Indicator for a 4-cylinder engine, Align the pointer with the 1.6 Top mark on the damper for a 6-cylinder engine. Check for proper setting of the compression TDC for the No. 1 cylinder by confirming that neither ‘the intake nor exhaust rocker arms of the No. 1 cylinder are in contact with their respective valve stems. (Since neither the intake nor exhaust valves ‘lose or open when the crankshaft rotates in the vicinity of the TOC on the compression stroke of the No. 1 cylinder piston, the rocker arms of the No, 1 cylinder do not come in contact with the value stems and, therefore, remain stopped. Mean: while, the rocker arms of the No. 4 cylind 4-cylinder engines and the rocker arm of the No, 6 cylinder for 6-cylinder engines move up and down.) Position the No. 1 cylinder of the injection pump at ‘TDC. Insert the pump gear into the coupling so that the gear meshes with splines in the coupling, for 155-4 SERIES ‘© Fit the injection pump to the drive shaft housing so that the match merks drawn on both parts before disassembly come into alignment with each other. © When the injection pump has been replaced or when ‘the injection timing before disassembly is unknown, temporarily tighten the injection pump mounting bolts (co allow the pump to move right and left), ‘and adjust the injection timing according to the following procedure, INYECTION TING ADIUSTMEWT PROCEDURE isting 33° BTDC ($0188: 4 S601884 No. 10011~ 100) a erBe (esotss no ator ase) Saor364 1. Turn the crankshaft in the direction of rotation to set the No. 1 cylinder piston to the TDC on tha, compression stroke; align the pointer with the 1.4 ‘Top mark on the indicator for a 4-cylinder engine ‘and align the pointer with the 1.6 Top mark on the damper for a 6-cylinder engin: Relative marks on the 6-cylinder engine damper are shown below. S127FI I I-1 12-405 ® TESTING AND ADJUSTING PERFORMANCE TEST ON FEED PUMP PERFORMANCE TEST ON FEED PUMP OIL-TIGHTNESS TEST Make sure the priming pump handle is secured tight in place. Plug the discharge opening. Apply 2 kg/cm? ‘compressed air to the pump inlet, the immerse the pump ia pool of clean diesel fuel oil or Kerosene, Bubbles will develop: catch the bubbles with a measuring eylinder, as shown, Bubbles should be smaller thn grain size, and the amount of air collected in the cylinder should not be greater than 10-ce for 1 minute. If leakage of compres: sed air is greater than this, replace the oil seal There must not be any leakage from the connections of the nipple, piston chamber plug and priming pump. A leaky connection needs repair. Calibnatd ovine et SUCTION LIFT TEST Install the feed pump on the injection pump, and connect a pipe (8 mm in I.0. and 2m in length} to the feed pump inlet. Have the priming pump handle screws in all the way. Operate the pump to lift diesel fuel oil in 4 vessel one meter below the feed pump, in the follow- ing manner: 1. Operate the priming pump at a rate of 60 stroke/ minute. The pump should start discharging at 20th stroke or, at least, at 30th stroke. 2, Run the injection pump at 150 rpm. The feed pump should start discharging within 30 seconds of opera- tion, (Cam lift: 6 mm) 195-4 SERIES. DISCAHRGE PERFORMANCE TEST Operate the feed pump under the same conditions as for the function lift test, to check the following items: 1. Open the discharge valve, Run the feed pump at 1000 rpm. The pump should deliver at @ rate of 1700 co/minute, 1.5 ka/em?. 2, Run the pump at 600 rpm, with the discharge side closed. The pump should develop at least 3 ke/em? of discharge pressure. INJECTION NOZZLE Clean the injection nozzle to be test. Also clean the nozzle tester. Make absolutely sure that the diesel fuel oil to be used in testing the nozzle is perfectly clean, 1. With the nozzlehoider adjusting screw loosened, install the nozzle in the tester, and blow oil out twice or thrice to purge the oil passage within the nozzle. 2. Pump the tester fever at a rate of 60 stroke/minute, While reading the gauge, run in the adjusting screw until the gauge indicates the specified pressure of 178 kg/em* 3, After obtaining the specification pressure, tighten ‘the cap nut to lock the adjusting screw. Check to see if this tightening has disturbed the setting. The gauge pointer might vacillate: if it does, read the rman value. 4. Check the soray pattern, A geometrically symmetri- ‘al pattern, with uniform atomization from each orifice, should be available, There should be no break nor steps nor thin portions in the pattern. 5. Inspect the seating faces of needle valve and nozzle body. Remove scora marks, if any, on the face by lapping with the use of a proper lapping compound, If the seat face is damaged beyond repair, replace the nozzle body and needle valve asa set. (Replace- ment of one injection-nozzle necessitates replace- ‘ment of ali the outor nozzles for the pump.) Load test Git is be A | inet é, Ee / \ mB ns Rotational Speed rpm Make a connection to the dynamometer, and fix the throttle valve, when the dynamometer loed and throttle value are adjusted till values of 18 HP/2500 rpm and 6 kgm/1700 rpm are obtained at full load. Then adjust the dynamometer load with the throttle valve fixed to compare the shaft output, shaft torque, and rate of fuel consumption with the curves plotted in the graph shown above, When the load test is completed, reduce the load to zero after the maximum rotational speed is obtained at full load, Then measure the maximum rotational speed at no load to determine the governor per- formanes. 2.
