News from the Ministries of Kids Alive International Peru

Fall 2011

THE YEAR OF THE PLAYGROUND - Each of the Peru sites have been richly blessed with the addition of
various items of playground equipment this year. This process took a great amount of planning and effort from the time they were taken out, cleaned and re-painted in Michigan; shipped via container to Peru; passed through a lengthy customs process and finally re-constructed in their new homes, where they have already been played on by hundreds of kids!! It has been truly amazing to see the joy in their faces as they run around, up and down these amazing structures of fun. A big THANK YOU to all who made it possible to relocate these playgrounds to the sites here in Peru!! A very SPECIAL THANK YOU to those who came and installed the sets here at our different sites; Lima Playground Team (different churches in MI led by Rich Anderson); Andahuaylas Playground Team (East Martin CRC & Martin Reformed Church, Martin, MI); Pucallpa Playground Team (Gracespring Church, MI).

Farewell Shannon...
Shannon Eaton has played a number of significant roles for Kids Alive in Peru and is missed greatly by staff and kids alike. A registered nurse by profession, Shannon supervised all the Health and Safety aspects for our ministries in Lima for the last five years and also more recently in Andahuaylas. When she first arrived, Shannon took over as Sponsorship Coordinator for awhile and more recently was the interim Childrens Home Director for the Juniper Tree while we were searching for a new director. More than anything she showed a true servants heart in whatever she did. There were many times she would stay overnight with sick children at the hospital or let them recuperate at her apartment so that a housemom could have a break. Her apartment also became a hangout for some of the Home graduates who appreciated a listening ear or some sage advice. In July the Juniper Tree held a goodbye party for Shannon, the highlight of which was one of our older girls with a yellow grocery bag on her hair pretending to be Shannon and bossing the kids around and giving them health advice all with a North American accent. Shannon will be greatly missed by all who knew her here. Please pray for her in her transition back to life in Pennsylvania. Juniper Tree

The Playground Team with the Home Kids

New Home Director Kids Alive Peru is pleased to welcome Ruben Effio as Director of the Juniper Tree Childrens Home in Pachacamac. It has been a long prayer-filled process and we are grateful to our national board for their wisdom and input. Ruben is married to Marta and they have two children, Marta Sofia (12) and Austin (9). Ruben has been a pastor for many years and we are happy to have someone who can really shepherd the hearts of both the children and staff. There are so many different facets to being a childrens home director and it is not for the faint of heart so please be praying with us that Ruben would have much wisdom and strength in guiding many lives at the Juniper Tree.

We had some repeating teams as well as a number of new teams this year which resulted in many new friendships being made. One highlight of the year was the arrival of our playgrounds for each of our ministry sites. At the Juniper Tree, the installation was very much a group effort as delays in customs caused the container with the playgrounds in it to arrive on site very late. That meant that we had to call in many friends to help and work well into the night to get the playground installed before it was time for the team to go home. Separate teams went to Andahuaylas and Pucallpa to install those playgrounds and now all the kids in our ministries are enjoying having their very own park right on site.
Our spring and summer construction season here at the Juniper Tree Childrens Home is winding down and we are just now able to stop and observe all that was accomplished. Our sports court is now completely surrounded by sidewalks and grass and each one of our houses has a beautiful sunroom off the patio door. The kids love spending time out there playing games or doing their homework.

As a result of a robbery at our workshop at the Juniper Tree, we have decided to raise the height of our perimeter wall. We have been working on it for about a month now and are half of the way around the property. So far the wall looks great and is sure to keep any unwanted visitors out. Some of our older boys have taken this opportunity to learn a little more about construction by helping the bricklayers. Our latest excitement has come from the birth of thirteen piglets to our very proud mama pig. The kids were all present for the births and have really enjoyed watching the piglets grow up. They learn great responsibility from looking after the animals which also include rabbits, chickens, cats, a dog and even hamsters.

We are incredibly grateful to God for giving us the privilege to be a part of His work and seeing lives changed by the transforming power of the gospel. Such is the case for our pre-kindergarten children (ages 3 and 4 years) who delight in listening to the Bible classes in which Jesus is the super hero who loves and cares for them, especially one who can forgive their sins and make them children of God by faith in Him. The mothers in the Moms Helping Moms program continue their discipleship classes, studying a book called Christian Home. They have also begun to study the book "Lies Women Believe and the Truth That Will Set You Free". One grateful mom also just received the blessing of having the walls of her house repaired by a couple of Canadian visitors to avoid the cold and the night air. During the month of August we celebrated Children's Day with the children learning that they are a special treasure in the heart of God and without faith it is impossible to please Him. Their favorite chorus during the month was "If you have faith like a mustard seed" (taken from Luke 17:6).

We thank God with all our hearts for His mercy in our lives and His love that never ends. We thank Him for His constant provision for our needs through the generous hearts that support the ministry of the Oasis. May God fill you with the most abundant blessings. Juan Carlos Del Cuadro

From very early on Noe proved to be humble, respectful and very responsible in his studies. After finishing high school he decided to study Gastronomy and soon became one of the best students in his class, even earning a scholarship to receive professional training in the city of Lima for two months. Upon graduating from Gastronomy the opportunity arose for him to become an assistant in the kitchen at the best tourist restaurant in Andahuaylas. As a result of his honesty and professional ability Noe was recently entrusted with the leadership of the kitchen. Currently 21 years of age, Noe loves the Lord, is an active member of his congregation and would like to go to seminary soon in order to serve the Lord better. We are proud of this young professional that the Lord has enabled us to help through generous child sponsors and the International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons! Jaime Altamirano

Graduate Focus: Noe

About 10 years ago Noe was brought to Andahuaylas by his very poor parents from their small village. It is a common practice for farming parents to leave their children in the hands of a city-dwelling family. In exchange for giving them a home, the child is expected to work for them during the day and try to study at night. During his first year of this arrangement, Noe's job was to rear the pigs and graze the sheep and it was at this time he found his way to the Children's Home to inquire about the possibility of being taken in. After carefully investigating Noe's situation, the Friends of Peru Children's Home welcomed him into their care.

Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. (Ps. 27:14)
As previously mentioned in the Llama Reporter we had a number of problems getting the container with playground equipment out of customs. It was very hard to just wait on the Lord. In our own strength we emailed, we called, we tried to move our contacts and were getting increasingly frustrated, but at the end of the day it was really the time spent in prayer which not only moved mountains (of paperwork) but also gave us strength and His peace that He would work things out for His glory so that we could not take any credit. It was with much relief that the container arrived at the Juniper Tree a day and a half before the team left giving everyone just enough time to install it and dedicate it with the cement still wet. Praise God that His timing is always perfect and designed to make us rely completely on Him so that He receives maximum glory. Now if I could only learn that lesson really well so God doesn't need to teach it to me again soon. Michael Fietje
Field Director

We are very happy to report that this years new program the Homework Club has been well received and currently has 35 primary aged kids enrolled. Our teachers are doing a fantastic job of ministering to the needs of these young lives through Bible stories, dynamic classes of re-enforcing school lessons and help with weekly homework assignments. They are also growing new relationships with parents through visitation and monthly workshops giving instruction in basic first aid and safety in the home, among other topics. We look forward to the beginning of the new club season as we start the AWANA program with our two younger age groups. We currently have 130 six to eleven year-olds eagerly awaiting the 13th and 14th of September!! The third annual CAMP TEC was a highlight for many of our older club kids this summer. During the first week of August we were joined by 45 of our teenagers for 5 days of everything extreme. The obstacle course, the treasure hunt, the games, Juan Pablos Challenge - all were part of a week of fun also focused on a practical Bible study from the book of James. 39 kids made commitments that week to live to the glory of God. Praise the Lord! September also sees the kick-off of our annual sporting event Calichines (little league). It is an event that has been running for 30 years now in which teams from San Jos and the surrounding villages compete in Soccer and Volleyball. This year we have 27 teams of 9 players ready to battle it out to see which will be involved on finals night, the 15th of October.

Work still continues at the Childrens Home with Jamer keeping up with the maintenance of the land and orchard. He and his wife, Soila, have been caretakers there for the past two years. They also take care of two of their grandchildren, one of whom is Santiago*, a regular at TECs older boys club. Santiago has invited a number of kids, from a recent land invasion next to the Home, to come and join him at the club, one specifically named Juan* has become a regular. Through this contact Jamer has been able to get to know some of the parents now building small homes close by and this past Friday night was able to begin a small group Bible study with three couples including Juans parents. Juan and Santiago are both 13 years of age and were among those who made commitments during CAMP TEC in August. Juan has also joined Santiago in coming to the local church.
