I. OBJECTIVES
● This activity aims to help students learn how to design a progressive lap wound generator.
● It also increases the student’s understanding on the computation of the generator
specifications.
II. INTRODUCTION
A generator is a basic device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. It is
essential in a variety of applications, ranging from powering homes during blackouts to
generating electricity in power plants. Generators operate on the principle of electromagnetic
induction, which was discovered in the early nineteenth century by Michael Faraday. The
movement of conductors within a magnetic field produces an electromotive force (EMF),
which generates electricity. There are many different types and designs of generators, but one
notable configuration is the lap winding generator.
The ability of lap winding to handle high current loads without overheating is its primary
advantage. Lap winding generators effectively manage heat generated during operation by
distributing current across multiple parallel paths. Furthermore, lap winding generators are
well-known for their dependability and ease of maintenance, making them an ideal choice in
situations where downtime can be costly. Generators, including lap winding variants, are
critical components of our modern infrastructure, ensuring a steady and consistent supply of
electrical power for a variety of applications.

The duplex lap winding experiment is a hands-on lab exercise used to better understand the
concepts and uses of lap winding in electric machines, especially in direct current (DC) motors.
Armatures are connected using the lap winding technique, which connects the coils in a certain way
to enable effective commutation and effective performance. The lap winding method is used to wind
coils and link them. In this winding arrangement, a parallel connection is made between the
beginning of one coil and the end of the nearby coil. The way the winding is done creates multiple
parallel channels for current flow.
The duplex lap winding experiment provides valuable insights into the practical application of
winding techniques in electric machines. It allows students and researchers to gain hands-on experience
in creating lap-wound armatures and understanding their advantages in DC motors. Through this
experiment, participants learn not only about the physical process of winding coils but also the
theoretical principles behind lap winding. They discover how lap winding contributes to smoother
commutation and improved motor performance. In conclusion, the duplex lap winding experiment
serves as an important educational tool for those studying electrical engineering and motor design. It
enhances their understanding of winding techniques and their impact on the operation of DC motors,
contributing to a solid foundation in electrical machine theory and practice.
