What is Fault???
The movement caused the rock to deform, so that they fracture.
This fractures are called Faults.
Elastic Rebound Theory
Over a long period of time, due to various slot tectonic activities, strains
accumulated at the fault (Fig-1).
Slip occurs due to crushing of rock and masses, thus the strain is released.
(Fig-2).
Strained layers of rock masses bounces back to its unstrained condition
(Fig-3)
Seismic Waves
Seismograph (Seismometer): An instrument that detects and measures
vibration’s of earth surface. https://youtu.be/eE54rBak8vA
Seismogram: The record made by a seismograph.

How to Measure Earthquake
Magnitude: Measure of the Energy released by an earthquake. The larger
the magnitude stronger the earthquake.
It’s a Qualitative measures by Richter Scale.
How to Measure Earthquake
How to Measure Earthquake
Intensity: The effect of an earthquake and how the earthquake is felt by
people.
It’s a Quantitative measures.
Modified Mercalli Scale is used to describe the intensity.
Depends on: Local soil conditions, Type and quality of structures,
Epicentral distance, Focal depth, Performance of earthquake resistant
structures
