2. Safety Precautions

Please observe the following precautions to ensure the safety of patients as well as operators
when using this equipment.

WARNING: 1. When images are displayed using the 3D application, gain a full
understanding of its restrictions and take special care when
performing diagnosis based on the images.

* As the desired region can be extracted using the 3D

application, a 3D image that differs from the actual image data
can be generated.

* The regions deleted by bone removal processing cannot be

displayed even if the opacity, window level, and window width
are changed. Be sure to confirm that an existing area that is
important for diagnosis is not deleted before performing region
processing.

* When the color is set to "None" or "Black" or when the opacity

is set to a value close to zero, a visible area may disappear,
resulting in non-display of an area that is important for
diagnosis.

* Canceling an inserted color setting range results in loss of

color setting information for the CT numbers in the range,
which may not display a region that contains significant
diagnostic findings. (The color that was set before insertion of
a new color range is not automatically restored.)

2. The 3D application is intended to serve only as a diagnostic

assistant when using a diagnostic system. Gain a full
understanding of its restrictions, and do not rely solely on the
images or calculation results obtained using the 3D application
to establish a definitive diagnosis.

* For images containing measurement information, take special

care regarding the relationship between measurement points
marked on the image and measurement values.

* In MPR measurement, check the positions of the measurement

points while observing the three-cross sectional planes.

No. 2B201-391EN*D

4
CAUTION: 1. Do not change the name of the output file. Doing so may lead to
incorrect identification of data. (Do not copy the output AVI file
from the CD-R to other media or the HDD.)

2. Do not overwrite the related information file. Doing so may lead to

incorrect diagnosis or misidentification of the patient. (Do not copy
the output AVI file from the CD-R to other media or the HDD.)ccc

3. Brain subtraction images are images generated by image

processing and do not contain all of the information acquired at the
time of scanning. In addition, errors due to interpolation between
slices and calculation errors for pixel values may occur during
image generation. (For details of interpolation between slices, refer
to "Measurement errors" in Section 9.)
Ensure that you clearly understand these precautions and check the
subtraction images in 2D display before using brain subtraction
images.

4. With regard to the display of brain subtraction images, note that the
expected region (region required for diagnosis) may not be
displayed in 3D display depending on the status of the images.
Ensure that you clearly understand these precautions and check the
subtraction images in 2D display before using brain subtraction
images.

5. The regions required for diagnosis may be deleted from the 3D page
data as a result of image processing. Before performing diagnosis,
check the original images in 2D display and MPR display.

CAUTION: The output AVI file contains personal information such as the patient name. Be
extremely careful to ensure that the CD-R and data are handled appropriately.

1.1 Startup

Click the button in the Command Box of the image processing monitor to start up the 3D application.

3D application start-up window

WARNING: When images are displayed using the 3D application, gain a full
understanding of its restrictions and take special care when
performing diagnosis based on the images.

* As the desired region can be extracted using the 3D application, a 3D

image that differs from the actual image data can be generated.

NOTE: In the 3D application, when several objects with complicated shapes are
processed for a large amount of volume data, processing may stop in rare
cases due to insufficient memory capacity. In this case, take appropriate
actions such as reducing the number of objects or removing noise from the
objects in order to secure sufficient memory capacity. If processing still
stops, terminate the 3D application and then retry it after reducing the
number of images to be processed.

23
(2) Group of images that can be handled in the 3D application
In the 3D application, images satisfying the same conditions as for the MPR application can be read.
In addition, the following types of data can be read in the 3D application.
• 3D page data
When 3D page data (object data) is selected in the image selection window, both the 3D page data and
the original volume data from which the 3D page data was created are loaded. If the original volume data
is already loaded, it is not possible to load only the 3D page data.
⇒ Section 15 "Opacity"
• Brain subtraction images
The volume data generated by the brain subtraction software can be read.
The maximum number of images that can be processed in the 3D application is 1500.
⇒ Subsection 7.2 "Before Starting Operation" in the operation manual (Reference volume)

CAUTION: • Brain subtraction images are images generated by image processing

and do not contain all of the information acquired at the time of
scanning. In addition, errors due to interpolation between slices and
calculation errors for pixel values may occur during image
generation. (For details of interpolation between slices, refer to
"Measurement errors" in Section 9.)
Ensure that you clearly understand these precautions and check the
subtraction images in 2D display before using brain subtraction
images.

• With regard to the display of brain subtraction images, note that the
expected region (region required for diagnosis) may not be displayed
in 3D display depending on the status of the images.
Ensure that you clearly understand these precautions and check the
subtraction images in 2D display before using brain subtraction
images.

• The regions required for diagnosis may be deleted from the 3D page
data as a result of image processing. Before performing diagnosis,
check the original images in 2D display and MPR display.

No. 2B201-391EN*D Startup of the 3D Application

24
(3) Carry-over function for images
• When patient data is carried over to the 3D application from another application
When the Auto Load button is set to ON in the Filming page window or the Clinical page window, the
data displayed in the previous application window is automatically read when the previous application is
switched to the 3D application. (Note that only volume data images can be automatically read.)
When the MPR application is switched to the 3D application, the data displayed in the MPR application
window is automatically carried over to the 3D application window regardless of the setting of the Auto
Load function.
If the number of images to be carried over exceeds the maximum number of images (1500) that can be
handled, the following window is displayed.

NOTE: The number of images that can be handled in the 3D application is less that
that in the MPR application.

2.2 Selecting a Target Frame

When a target frame is clicked in the image display area, it becomes active and the image display area in the
frame is enclosed by a yellow frame.
In general, frame selection allows the system to determine whether the image in the selected frame is a 3D image
or an MPR image.
In three MPR cross-sectional image display, when operations are performed for one plane, the planes displayed
in the other frames are also processed accordingly. Note that when three MPR cross-sectional images are
displayed, image rotation can be performed only for one plane and the images displayed in the other frames are
also rotated accordingly. In addition, display/non-display of the MPR plane cursor can be set individually in each
plane.
When several frames (both the 3D plane and the MPR planes) are selected, priority is given to the 3D plane.
To select multiple frames, click the left mouse button over the target frame while holding down the [Ctrl] key.

WARNING: When images are displayed using the 3D application, gain a full
understanding of its restrictions and take special care when
performing diagnosis based on the images.

* The regions deleted by bone removal processing cannot be

displayed even if the opacity, window level, and window width are
changed. Be sure to confirm that an existing area that is important
for diagnosis is not deleted before performing region processing.

NOTE: • If an attempt is made to set a point for target region selection in an area
where the opacity is low or if an area of low opacity is present in front of
the point for target region selection, the intended regions cannot be
selected. In addition, in color display of the selected range, areas where
the opacity is greater than 0 are displayed and regions that may not be
visible in the original image may appear clearly as a result. To avoid these
phenomena, it is recommended to set the gradient of the opacity curve to
vertical when bone removal processing is performed.

• Orthogonal clipping or oblique clipping can be performed in parallel with

bone removal processing. If the clipping plane is moved, the region
selected for deletion is deselected.

• If bone removal processing is performed, the border deleted by region

processing is deformed. If dilate processing is performed repeatedly, the
degree of deformation is increased.

• When the opacity is changed during bone removal processing, the

currently selected regions to be deleted are deselected.

• When the 3D application is switched to the MPR application during bone

removal processing and the MPR application is then switched back to the
3D application, the images displayed in the MPR application cannot be
carried over to the 3D application. (The data previously selected for bone
removal processing is displayed again.)

7.3 Operating Procedures

7.3.1 Selecting necessary and unnecessary regions

First, adjust the opacity so that it is optimal for region selection. In order to simplify the procedure for removing
unnecessary regions, make the opacity curve vertical so that the display and non-display regions can be clearly
identified. Set the opacity level to a value at which the contours of the target area are shown. The opacity set
here is for region selection only. It is different from the opacity of the final SVR image.
For easier region selection, it is desirable that no floating objects are present (granularity floating around the
organs or blood vessels, or objects that are not contiguous with other regions). When "Keep" is used, however,
floating objects can be eliminated in fewer steps.
Even if a necessary region is slightly connected to an unnecessary region or if a small part of a necessary region
is missing, it can be corrected by performing region expansion or contraction processing as described later.

If the opacity curve is not vertical, regions that cannot be visualized in SVR images are also selected.

When the opacity curve is vertical, the regions are defined more clearly.

9.2 Description of Function

Measurement is performed for SVR images and MPR images.

3D measurement (measurement using the space coordinates) is used for measurement for SVR images. 3D
measurement is performed for the region currently displayed in the image display area. Note that when the
opacity level is too low and close to transparency, the measurement points may not be set at the intended
locations.
In addition, measurement points can be set while the object is being rotated. The measurement points are
projected on the surface of the object and displayed on the planar image ignoring the depth of the object. Confirm
the positions of the measurement points by rotating the object. Note that "×" is displayed on the mouse cursor in
locations where the measurement point cannot be set.
2D measurement is used for measurement for MPR images.
Note that polygonal line measurement and volume calculation cannot be performed. In addition, measurement
points extending over another frame cannot be set in MPR display.

The result displayed by the 3D application measurement function contains errors due to various reasons.
Therefore, when using the measurement function, take into account the possibility that the result may include
complex errors.

WARNING: The 3D application is intended to serve only as a diagnostic assistant

when using a diagnostic system. Gain a full understanding of its
restrictions, and do not rely solely on the images or calculation results
obtained using the 3D application to establish a definitive diagnosis.

* For images containing measurement information, take special care

regarding the relationship between measurement points marked on
the image and measurement values.

* In MPR measurement, check the positions of the measurement

points while observing the three-cross sectional planes.

Measurement errors

(1) Measurement is performed for areas currently displayed in the image display area. If an attempt is made to
set a measurement point in an area where the opacity is low or if an area where the opacity is low is present
before the measurement point, the measurement point may not be set at the intended location. Therefore, it
is recommended that measurement be performed several times while changing the conditions such as
angle.

(2) In Volume measurement, measurement results may vary depending on the Opacity conditions, the scan
slice position, the slice thickness, etc.

(3) Depending on the measurement point to be set, it may be set to the pixel adjacent to the intended pixel. The
error is therefore up to 2 pixels for distance measurement between two points in the vertical or horizontal
direction, and is greater in the oblique direction. In addition, in polygonal line measurement, the error
increases in proportion to the number of measurement points.

(4) In 3D application, output data may include errors relative to the actual data because two dimensional images
are used to reconstruct the three-dimensional image data. Although the error differs depending on the scan
conditions, it is generated as follows when the slice thickness is ignored.

(a) When the slice interval is set to A mm, since the region of interest is not displayed on images <1> and
<4> as shown in the figure on the next page, an error of up to 2 × A mm may be generated.
(Whether or not the region of interest is displayed on slices <1> and <4> depends on the slice
thickness, therefore the actual error varies with the slice thickness.)
(b) Error due to interpolation between slices

When a three-dimensional image is reconstructed, volume data is generated by interpolating images

according to the pixel size (a value obtained by dividing the FOV by the image matrix size (normally
512 × 512)). If the edges of the region of interest are not at interpolation positions, the same
phenomenon as in (1) occurs.
Therefore, if the pixel size is assumed to be B mm, an error of up to 2 × B mm may exist.

The table below shows an example of the maximum measurement error as the sum of the errors described in
(a) and (b) above. Also note that when an image is output on film, it is enlarged. As a result, the area
surrounding the region of interest is displayed out of focus. When measurement is performed, pay special
attention to this point.
Maximum error in point-to-point distance measurement (example)

12.1 Description of Function

This function allows interpolated 3D images to be generated from two registered images with different display
orientations and/or different display conditions. The generated 3D images can be saved as is or as a movie (key
frame movie image). Information items used for interpolation include the rotation angle, position shift,
magnification ratio, opacity level, color, lighting conditions (intensity, quality, direction), clipping, and oblique
clipping. Note that if the interpolation conditions include both rotation and position shift, rotation is given priority.
Specifically, a movie showing the object rotating at the position of the current image (which has a larger
registration number) is generated.
The resulting images can be output as an AVI file or as RGB images.

NOTE: • A key frame movie image cannot be generated by interpolating images

before and after bone removal or cutting. (If such images are specified for
movie image generation, only the image after processing is used to
generate a movie image.)

• The most recently selected object image and rendering mode are used for

The system is provided with two modes: simplified setting mode (in which setting is performed by selecting the
desired preset icon) and detailed setting mode (in which detailed setting is performed by graph operation and
numerical value entry). Clicking the Opacity button displays the Simplified Setting pane.

15.2.1 Simplified Opacity Setting pane

Clicking or clicking the Preset tab in the Opacity window displays the Opacity Window Preset pane

shown in the figure below. Perform the following processing in the pane.
• Selecting a preset icon for SVR display setting
• Generating objects
• Saving, deleting, or fusing objects
• Selecting the object to be processed

<1> Reference image

Clicking a preset icon applies the opacity setting conditions registered to that icon to the 3D image, which is
displayed as the reference image. (The image is also displayed in the image display area.) The original
image (which has not undergone any region processing such as bone removal, segmentation, and cutting)
is always displayed here. Clicking the reference image resets the region processing applied to the object
image displayed in the image display area to return it to its original status (i.e., the same as the reference
image).
An orange frame indicates the image from among the reference image and four object images (<2>) that is
selected as the current object. The image display area always displays the current object image.

No. 2B201-391EN*D Opacity

103
<2> Object icon
The opacity setting and processing status can be registered for up to four buttons. An object refers to
volume data for which opacity setting or region processing has been performed. Clicking an object icon
displays the object registered to the button in the image display area. Processing information items
registered in the object icons are cleared when other data is loaded, the image is closed, or the 3D
application is terminated.
Therefore, to save them, save the entire Opacity window including the processed object using the Save 3D
Page button or save only the opacity settings in the preset icons.
If processing information is not registered as an object after opacity setting change, bone removal, or cutting
is performed, the processing information is cleared when another object is selected.
<3> Object Fuse button
Fuses the objects when this button is set to ON and displays the resulting image in the image display area.
At this time, the lighting and background color settings of the current object are used as the display
conditions.
<4> Save Model
Registers the object currently displayed in the image display area to a blank object icon (<2>). If there is no
blank button available, the object cannot be registered. In this case, delete an unnecessary object icon.
<5> Delete Model
Click this button and then click the object to be deleted. Note that the reference object cannot be deleted.
<6> Invert
Creates an object by subtracting the object displayed in the image display area from the volume data
(reference object). The created object is registered to the object icon.

Reference image Image displayed in the [Invert] processing

image display area image

Keep in mind that clipping and oblique clipping are performed after volume data inversion.
<7> Preset data
Up to forty types of opacity settings (4 × 10) can be registered. Clicking a preset icon applies the opacity
setting registered to that icon to the current object (object image currently displayed in the image display
area).
Even if a preset icon is clicked after region processing (bone removal, cutting, etc. ), clipping, or oblique
clipping is performed, the opacity setting of the processing results is not changed.
<8> Save Preset
Registers the opacity setting of the current object to a preset icon. These information items are
automatically assigned to a blank preset icon. The image displayed in the image display area is shown on
the icon as a label. The processed status of the object is not saved. The preset icon is saved even when
other data is loaded or the system is shut down.
<9> Delete Preset
Click this button and then click the desired preset icon. The preset icon is deleted.

<10> Save 3D Page
When the Save 3D Page button is clicked, the objects registered in the Opacity window are saved in the file
system. The processed status of the object and transparency and color settings displayed on the four object
icons in the Opacity window are saved as one 3D page data item. (The current status of the Opacity window
is saved.)
3D page data can be loaded in the image select window and used in the 3D application. Note that if the
original volume data used to create 3D page data is not present or some of the images in the original volume
data are inadequate, 3D page data cannot be loaded. In addition, 3D page data cannot be used for volume
data other than the original volume data.
Although the saved 3D page data can be saved in a DVD and an MO, it cannot be transferred to other
systems. 3D page save cannot be performed when the original image is not volume data, the original image
is a brain subtraction image, image reading is interrupted, or the object has not yet been registered in the
Opacity window.
Note that clipping and oblique clipping are not applied to the saved objects.

object

Objects in the Opacity window

• Current object
The object selected for operation is enclosed in an orange frame. The object is displayed in the image display
area. This object is updated when the opacity setting is changed. To save the current status, make a copy
before proceeding to the next step or select another object.
When the object is processed in Bone Removal, Segmentation, or Cutting mode and the processing mode is
then closed without saving the processed status of the current object, the orange frame is moved to the
reference object. Since the current object in the image display area is not saved, the current object disappears
when the reference object or another object is clicked. It is recommended that the object be saved after region
processing.
• Registering an object and 3D page save
To save an object, register it first. When the Save Model button is clicked, the object displayed in the image
display area is registered to an object icon. If no icon is available, the object cannot be registered.
Although the object data registered in the object icon is saved even when the current object is changed, it is
cleared when the target image is closed or the system is shut down. To save the object data, perform 3D page
save.
• Making a copy of an object
When a new object is to be created, click [Save Model] to make a copy of the current object. To make a copy
of an object registered as an object icon, drag the copy source (enclosed in a purple frame) and drop it at the
copy destination (enclosed in a green frame) using the right mouse button (or [Shift] + middle mouse button).
• Deleting an object
Click [Delete Model] and then click the object to be deleted.
Note that the reference object cannot be deleted.

Clicking the [+] buttons under the desired object icons fuses the objects and displays the resulting image. Note
that if bone removal, cutting, lighting, or background color is specified for the fused images, it applies only to the
current object.

Fusing objects

15.3.2 Reference image

The reference image shows the volume data in the status before region processing is performed and represents
the initial opacity setting. The reference image does not change during processing.
When the reference image is clicked, all of the region processing and opacity setting operations performed for the
current object are canceled.

15.3.3 Selecting a preset icon

Clicking a preset icon applies the opacity setting registered to that icon to the current object. At this time, the
result of region processing applied to the object is retained as is.
Information items registered to a preset icon include color setting, opacity, and lighting.

15.3.4 Volume inversion

This function permits the region processing status of volume data to be inverted. For example, clicking [Invert] for
an object in which only the bones are selected creates an object in which only the bones are eliminated.

the current object to another object, save the settings to a preset icon once, select the object to which the current
object settings are to be applied, and then select the preset icon.
Remember that closing the image or loading another image deletes all objects from the Opacity window.

15.3.9 Saving all objects and opacity settings

When [Save 3D Page] is clicked, all objects displayed in the Opacity window and the opacity settings are saved
as one data item in the file system. This data is referred to as 3D page data (object data). 3D page data can be
loaded in the image select window.

15.3.10 Loading 3D page data

To load the 3D page data saved in the file system, select the file of the target object in the image select window in
the same manner as for selecting the target volume data (image). At this time, the original volume data from
which the object was created is also loaded simultaneously. The loaded 3D page data is restored in the Opacity
window as it was saved.

WARNING: When images are displayed using the 3D application, gain a full
understanding of its restrictions and take special care when
performing diagnosis based on the images.

* When the color is set to "None" or "Black" or when the opacity is set
to a value close to zero, a visible area may disappear, resulting in
non-display of an area that is important for diagnosis.

* Canceling an inserted color setting range results in loss of color

setting information for the CT numbers in the range, which may not
display a region that contains significant diagnostic findings. (The
color that was set before insertion of a new color range is not
automatically restored.)
