Deflection of Beam

(Area-Moment Method)

Introduction
Under the action of external loads any beam bends and suffers deflection at various points along the length.
The deformation of a beam is usually expressed in terms of its deflection from its original unloaded position. The
deflection is measured from the original neutral surface of the beam to the neutral surface of the deformed
beam. The configuration assumed by the deformed neutral surface is known as the Elastic Curve of the beam.

Md. Sazedul Islam, Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering, AUST 18 December 2022 2
Introduction
Deflection: The vertical distance in transverse direction between positions of axis before and after loading at the
section of the beam, is defined as the deflection of beam at that section.
Elastic curve: The neutral axis in its deflected position after loading of the beam is known as its elastic curve or
deflection curve.
Slope: The slope of the beam at any section is defined as the angle (in radians) of inclination of the tangent
drawn at that section to the elastic curve, measured with respect to the undeformed axis/original neutral axis.
Flexural rigidity(EI): The product of Modulus of Elasticity (E) and Moment of Inertia (I) is known as
Flexural rigidity.

Methods of Determining Beam Deflections
Numerous methods are available for the determination of beam deflections. These methods include:
1. Double-Integration Method
2. Area-Moment Method
3. Strain-Energy Method (Castigliano's Theorem)
4. Conjugate-Beam Method
5. Method of Superposition
6. Unit Load Method

The tangential deviation 𝑡𝐷/𝐶 represents the vertical distance from D

subscript, the point whose deviation is being determined is written first.

Sign Conventions
The following rules of sign, illustrated in Fig. apply to the two moment-area theorems: .
• The tangential deviation 𝑡𝐵/𝐴 is positive if B lies above the tangent line drawn to the elastic curve at A
and negative if B lies below the tangent line.

A B -tB/A
+tB/A A B

Positive deviation, B located above reference tangent Negative deviation, B located below reference tangent

• Change of slope is positive if the angle from the tangent at the point to the left to the tangent at the
point to the right will be counterclockwise and vice versa.

A B
-θB/A
+θB/A
A B

Positive 𝜃𝐵/𝐴 has a counterclockwise direction, whereas negative 𝜃𝐵/𝐴 has a clockwise direction.

Method of Analysis
The following steps are followed to determine slope and deflection of beam using Area-Moment Method:
𝑴
1. Determine the support reactions and draw the beam’s diagram.
𝑬𝑰
2. Draw an exaggerated view of the beam’s elastic curve. Use the bending moment diagram (BMD) to draw the
deflected shape, recalling that a positive bending moment bends the beam concave upward, whereas a
negative bending moment bends it concave downward. Also note that points of zero slope and zero
displacement always occur at a fixed support and zero displacement occurs at all pin and roller supports.
3. The moment area theorems in general do not directly provide the slope and deflection at a point with respect
to the un-deformed axis of the beam; instead, they provide the slope and deflection of a point relative to the
tangent to the elastic curve at another point.
4. Therefore, before the slope or deflection at an arbitrary point on the beam can be computed, a point must be
identified where the slope of the tangent to the elastic curve is either initially known. Once this reference
tangent has been established, the slope and deflection at any point on the beam can be computed. In this
regard, the tangents at the supports should be considered, since the beam has zero displacement and/or zero
slope at the supports.
5. Apply the moment-area theorems as appropriate to determine the required slope and displacement.
