Why Not

by Siew Clark

The shawl is asymmetrical. The first section is

crocheted top-down & the second is crocheted
outward. It is worked in one piece. You can
customize into any size you want. You can
customize the border too with fewer gathers.
This pattern will work with any kind of yarn and
colours. Gauge is unimportant.

Note : If start off with even number of V-sts, the last row will have 2 V-sts.
If start off with odd number of V-sts, the second last row will have 3 V-sts.
Increase even number of pattern repeats in the bracket for a bigger shawl.

Pattern

Without border (option to use ch 171, add a row of sc across each ch, then start Row 1.)

First-fsc: ch2, insert hook into first ch, (yo, pull through one loop) twice, yo, pull through two loops.

Next-fsc: Insert hook into 2 loops at the bottom of the last SC worked, YO and pull through the 2 loops, YO and
pull through 1 loop (creating ch 1), YO and pull through 2 loops (sc made).

Fsc 170 (multiples of 3 + 2)

Row 1 : Ch 1, sc in first Fsc, ch 1, sk 1 Fsc, sc in next Fsc, (ch 3, sk 2 Fsc, sc in next Fsc) x 55, ch 1, sk 1 Fsc,
sc in next Fsc, turn.

Row 2 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 56, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, turn.

Row 3 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, (ch 3, sc in V-st sp) x 53, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Row 4 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 54, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, turn.

Row 5 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, (ch 3, sc in V-st sp) x 51, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Repeat rows 4 & 5. Decreasing 2 repeats in the bracket for every row until 2 V-sts left.

Do not cut the yarn, slip st along the short straight edge. Total 113 sts.
Place 113 slip stitches evenly along the short straight edge. In this case, we have 28 pattern repeats, so if we
place one slip stitch in the side of each sc, 3 slip stitches in the side of each dc and one slip stitch in the side of
the fsc that gives 113 stitches.

Row 1 : Ch 1, sc in first sl st, ch 1, sk 1 sl st, sc in next sl st, (ch 3, sk 2 sl st, sc in next sl st) x 36, ch 1, sk 1 sl
st, sc in next sl st, turn.

Row 2 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 37, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, turn.

Row 3 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, (ch 3, sc in V-st sp) x 34, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Row 4 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 35, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, turn.

Row 5 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, (ch 3, sc in V-st sp) x 32, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Repeat rows 4 & 5. Decreasing 2 repeats in the bracket for every row until 3 V-sts left.

Row 1 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, ch 3, sc in V-st sp, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Row 2 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 2, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, BO.

Fsc 131

Row 1 : Ch 1, sc in first Fsc, ch 1, sk 1 Fsc, sc in next Fsc, (ch 3, sk 2 Fsc, sc in next Fsc) x 42, ch 1, sk 1 Fsc,
sc in next Fsc, turn.

Row 2 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 43, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, turn.

Row 3 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, (ch 3, sc in V-st sp) x 40, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Row 4 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 41, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, turn.

Row 5 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, (ch 3, sc in V-st sp) x 38, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Repeat rows 4 & 5. Decreasing 2 repeats in the bracket for every row until 2 V-sts left.

Do not cut the yarn, slip st along the short straight edge. Total 85 sts.
Place 85 slip stitches evenly along the short straight edge. In this case, we have 21 pattern repeats, so if we
place one slip stitch in the side of each sc, 3 slip stitches in the side of each dc and one slip stitch in the side of
the fsc that gives 85 stitches.

Row 1 : Ch 1, sc in first sl st, ch 1, sk 1 sl st, sc in next sl st, (ch 3, sk 2 sl st, sc in next sl st) x 27, ch 1, sk 1 sl
st, sc in next sl st, turn.

Row 2 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 28, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, turn.

Row 3 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, (ch 3, sc in V-st sp) x 25, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Row 4 : Ch 3, sk first sc, (V-st in next sc) x 26, sk 1 ch, dc in sc, turn.

Row 5 : Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sc in V-st sp, (ch 3, sc in V-st sp) x 23, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, turn.

Repeat rows 4 & 5. Decreasing 2 repeats in the bracket for every row until 2 V-sts left. BO.

Option : either to sl st or not to sl st along the short straight edge.

: sc along the short straight edge of the second half of the shawl to match the fsc on the long edge of
the first half.
