INTRODUCTION
In this module you will be guided to access and install softwareupdates. At the end
of this module you will be able to understand the importance of software update and learn
how to turn on windows automatic updates.

WHAT TO KNOW

What is a software update?

A software update, which is sometimes
calleda software patch, is a free download for an
application, operating system, or software suite that
provides fixes for features that aren't working as
intended or adds minor software enhancements and
compatibility.

What is the difference between an upgrade and an update?

An upgrade is the act of replacing your product with a newer, and often more superior,
version or similar product. Therefore, an update modifies your current product while an upgrade
totally replaces it. When it comes to the frequency, upgrades happen a lot less often compared to
updates.

Why is it important to update software regularly?

The main reason anyone has for downloading and installing the latest update is to
stayprotected from security threats. Older software will continue to have the same bugs
and exploitable holes in the code that allow hackers and cyber criminals to get up to good.

Software Update or Upgrade

Reasons:
 Old programs are not compatible with newer hardware components
 New programs have more and improved features and capabilities
 Best technical and professional support

Is it necessary to update system?

System Updates are actually very necessary for your device. They mostly provide
Bugfixes & Security Update Patches, improves system stability and also sometimes UI
improvements. Security Updates are very important because older security can make you
more vulnerable to attacks.

Security
• Protection against threats: viruses, theft, hackers, natural disasters
• Old software are much more vulnerable

Productivity and Efficiency

• More tasks in less time
• More quality output

Decrease costs
• Upgrading a software/hardware component means less costs than replacing the
system

Things to consider before upgrading:

• Uninstall unused programs, remove temporarily files, cookies etc.
• Remove viruses, spyware, malware
• Defragmenting harddisk

Upgrading Hardware:
1. RAM
- more RAM better Multi-tasking
2. HARD DRIVE
- faster hard drive means faster PC
- faster spin means faster data read and write
3. PROCESSOR
- faster CPU means faster PC
- number of cores and speed, compatibility with motherboard

How do I turn on Windows 10 Automatic Updates?

To enable or disable Windows automatic updates, follow the steps below:
1. Select the Windows icon in the bottom left of your screen

2. Click on the Settings Cog icon.

 3. Once in Settings, scroll down and click on Update & Security

4. In the Update & Security window click Check for Updates if necessary. To check if
your updates are paused, click Advanced Options.
Some feature updates will need to be manually enabled even when automatic
updates are turned on. To do this go to, Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
and select Check for updates. Once the update appears, you can select
Download and install now.
