Foreign language learning begins at age 7 in Bulgarian schools, with English being the most popular choice. In 8th grade, students can choose between Russian or German for their second foreign language. Some private schools offer additional language options like French, Spanish, or Chinese. The author recommends improving foreign language education in Bulgaria by increasing teacher pay to motivate them, requiring higher qualifications for teachers, and allocating more of the national budget to education to provide better resources.

I’m writing this report as to comment on the foreign- language learning techniques in my motherland. I’ll be talking about the certain languages, where and who learns them and my recommendations for improving this part of our education. By law, every Bulgarian child must start school at the age of 7. That’s how old we are when we begin our foreign language classes. The most popular language within elementary schools is English, even though some private schools assign German as a first foreign language class. When students move to the 8th grade, it’s typical for state schools to give two options for the second foreign language class and it is either Russian or German. If you have enrolled into a school, which specializes in foreign languages, your options may be French, Spanish, and even Chinese! The diversity gets even bigger if you decide to take private courses with qualified teachers, i.e. to learn outside of school in a group or alone. However, improvements can be made and I have recommendations of my own. Firstly, a higher pay is mandatory for teachers in general. It’s going to be motivational and everyone would work harder and better. Secondly, not every state school teacher is qualified and this results in students having poor knowledge on the subject, so there should be more positions in universities. Lastly, a bigger part of the national budget should be spent for educational purposes. Financial help will lead to better equipment and access to better resourses!
