4
Internationalism

‘Many Voices, Many Expressions, One Direction’

Internationalism is an active and deep belief that binds us all in one

direction, as global citizens, to help create, apply, strengthen and
sustain our common values, cultures and equality within the richness
of diversity of lifestyle that is unique for each one of us.

Aims for all students and staff

● To create a living and safe working atmosphere where each

person can say “I can be myself, value myself, value others and rise to
the highest challenges of learning and personal integrity.”
● To create and sustain a positive learning atmosphere where the
‘atma’ – the very being of person, and ‘spheres’ – the space where we
learn and grow, are honored and nurtured.

Values Educational Program.
● To provide a purposeful and attractive academic environment
where learning is a joyful, challenging, creative, liberating and never-
ending pursuit.

exploring the highest dimensions of learning within the context of the
Kuwait culture and international community.

5
Non – Discrimination

No person in school shall be discriminated against on the basis of

race, nationality or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex or age. The letter
and spirit of applicable human rights laws shall be carefully observed,
enforced, and supported, so that all members of the school
community may work together in an atmosphere of tolerance and
respect for individual differences.

This policy of non-discrimination shall prevail in all matters relating to

instruction and course selection, choice of instructional materials, in
career guidance and counseling, and in all matters pertaining to race
and community relations.

Living Values Education and Assemblies

The school believes that values education and character development

are very important for the holistic development of the student.
We define values as:
The principles and fundamental convictions that act as a guide to
behavior:
⮚ Enduring beliefs about what is worthwhile.
⮚ Ideals for which one strives, and
⮚ The standards, beliefs, and actions that are judged to be good
and desirable.
Our school has adopted the Living Values Education Program as the
main methodology for the education of character based on LVRUS –
Love, Valuing each person, Respect, Understanding, and Safety.

The program educates 12 universal values. They are: Peace, Respect,

Responsibility, Love, Humility, Happiness, Simplicity, Honesty, Co-
operation, Unity, Freedom, and Tolerance.
These values and other positive values are modeled throughout the
school.
We have regular assemblies where the principal, staff, and each class
show how we can practically live that value. Students join in the
activities in class and around school. Parents are informed of the
value and are invited to join in implementing it at home. One new
value is emphasized every month.

Lifelong – Learning

We are a learning school and welcome partnerships to help co-create

and enrich our values-based approach to learning and education.

6
Child Protection Policy

The Kuwait American School is a caring values-based school and we

are proud to uphold and nurture the Living Values Education
protocols of love, values, respect, understanding and safety for each
student in a caring atmosphere of positivity and academic success.

In coherence with the laws and cultural expectations of Kuwait, all

employees and volunteers at the Kuwait American School are required
to follow a non-discriminatory code of conduct that secures the well-
being, emotional welfare and safety of our students.

Activating Child Protection means being alert to any concerns that are
drawn to our attention and require investigation.

These concerns can be purely school related and concerns that may
come home or out of school issues.

Concerns are categorized on 3 levels – low, medium and high.

• Low level concerns include emotionally withdrawn behaviors

and attention seeking.
• Medium level concerns include behaviors beyond the child’s
emotional maturity and adult behavior that acted in a way that
harmed or may have harmed a child.
• High level concerns include consistent emotionally withdrawn
behaviors and aggressive behavior.
The schools’ response to observed behaviors and allegations are 3 fold:

1. All issues are handled with the utmost confidence by senior

staff.
2. Parents are informed and share in the resolution of all observed
behaviors and allegations.
3. Low and medium observed behaviors and allegations are
usually resolved in school.
High level concerns may require the mandated support of outside
agencies.

In a rapidly changing world, the safety of all students and ourselves is

of paramount importance.

At the Kuwait American School, we believe that our shared child

protection endeavors will continue to protect our children from early
childhood to emotional maturity within the laws, frameworks and
cultural norms that respectfully govern us all.

7
Health, Hygiene and Safety

Nurse room regulations

The school nurse will maintain regular duties including health and
wellness checks and records, parent contacts, first aid, prevention
awareness education, maintaining, and supervising student
prescriptions brought to school by parents and guardians.

Personal Protection

Masks/Facial Coverings: Face masks/facial coverings may still be

used for employee and student protection in case a person is feeling
unwell or may have any form of virus or flu.

In order to avoid absences, if a student or teacher feels ill and/or may

have flu-like symptoms, he/she must wear a mask at all times while
at school to avoid spreading any viruses.

Hygiene Procedures:

● Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
● Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are
not available.
● Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth.
● Cover mouth and nose with a tissue during a cough or sneeze or use
the inside of the elbow.

Personal Space and Well-being

While we still may have different levels of fears and concerns revolving
around Covid-19, it is important to be considerate of others and how
they feel.

8
Blended Learning

Students in Grade 4 & 5 are required to bring their own device to

school to aid teaching and learning. School provides IPad for Grade 1-
3 students upon booking the IPad.

The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy establishes the Kuwait
American School guidelines for students’ use of personally owned
electronic devices for education-related purposes only.

Student Responsibilities:

1. The student is responsible for his device. The school is not

responsible for any damage or loss of the device.
2. The device will be used inside the classrooms as per teachers’
directions only.
3. There are no battery charging facilities in the school, students
must charge their devices at home.
4. Students are not allowed to take photos or videos for any
student, teacher or visitor or employee in the school.
5. The device must not be used except as directed by the teacher,
basically for learning and research.
6. The school has the right to monitor the files and download them
from the device, to make sure that the student has not used the
device in any unacceptable activities.
7. Students are not allowed to use the device to harass or bully
others through communications or other actions that are not allowed
to take place in school.
8. In case students violate any of the rules above, the school has
the right to take proper measures against the student according to the
School’s Behavior Policy.
9. Each device should be protected by screen protector and device
case.
10. In case the device is lost, it is the parents’ responsibility to
handle all the electronic search and contacting and following up with
the authorities.

ATTENDANCE

School Timing
School hours start at 7:30 A.M. and end at 2:15 P.M. for Elementary
students. Students are expected to arrive at school before classes
begin. Students are expected to be in their seats in class with their
books and materials on their desks ready for the lesson. Students are
considered tardy to school if they arrive after 7:45A.M. They should
take a tardy pass from the front office to be given to their teacher.

Parents/Guardians are asked to not drop their student off before 7:00
A.M. in the morning and to pick up their students punctually at the
end of the school day; there is no adult supervision before 7:00 A.M.
or after 2:45P.M. These current drop off and pick up times are subject
to change and parents/guardians will be informed of any time
changes. The school is not responsible for students remaining after
2:45 P.M. unless they are in a school sponsored event.

11
A student’s parents/guardians are responsible for ensuring that
their children arrive to school on time.

It is essential that all students arrive on time and leave at the correct
time. Attendance at school is critical to the academic achievement of
any student. Either coming late to class or being absent disrupts the
academic progress of not just the individual student but that of the
entire class.

Attendance Procedure

1. Any student arriving to school late must report to the front

office to receive a tardy slip before entering their classroom.

2. Students who arrive after 7:45 A.M are considered tardy.

Exceptions will be made for verified doctor or dental appointments
and for other absences where prior approval is obtained through the
coordinator.

Attendance Policy

- An absence includes all types of non-school related absences

including the following: travel, vacations, etc. Please note that these
are NOT considered excused absences. It is very important that
students miss as few days as possible so that they do not miss
classroom instruction and activities that are essential for learning.
Colleges are particularly interested in a student’s motivation, focus,
and work habits, a student’s attendance and tardy record for each
year will be documented in his/her recommendation letter.
- Students with excessive absences and tardies demonstrate a
lack of commitment to their education and may not be accepted to
KAS for the following school year.

- Parents/Guardians and students must understand that an

absence / tardiness from school seriously affects academic progress.
- Students who persistently arrive late disturb the learning of
other students. Tardiness and early leaving means that students miss
valuable instruction and required attendance time for their high
school graduation.
- Parents/Guardians who schedule long weekend or extended
holidays need to provide a written notice to inform the administration
before the holiday, although this is NOT accepted by the school and
will be considered unexcused. KAS families can benefit from holidays
by pre-planning for it using the school calendar.

12
- KAS policy prohibits students from leaving the campus during
the school day (including during lunch break). Once a student arrives
on campus for the school day, he/she will not be permitted to leave
the campus without administrative approval. Students leaving the
school for any reason (doctor's appointment, orthodontia, illness, etc.)
other than a school-sponsored activity without checking out through
the front office will be subject to disciplinary action. The check-out
procedure must be followed only if parents /guardians are aware their
student is leaving school.

- Whenever a student is absent from school due to illness,

parents/guardians must provide a written note from a physician (not
a parent/guardian) on the day they return to school before they enter
their first lesson.

- Regular attendance is required of all students. All cases of

irregular attendance will be investigated. When a student is absent
from school, a parent or guardian must call the school office as early
as possible on the day of the absence stating the reason and duration
of the absence. The student is required to bring a medical excused
note on the day the return to school.

- Persistent morning tardiness and early leaving will be addressed

by the Principal/ Elementary Coordinator and parents will be
contacted to address the matter.

Excused Absence

1. Personal illness: The administration will require certification of

a physician (a medical excuse).
2. Death of a family member

3. Student’s health services: The administration will require a

note signed by the parent/guardian requesting that a student be
released for an appointment. Every attempt should be made to
schedule appointments after school and on Saturdays.
4. Religious holy days and activities: Any student of an
established religious faith will be excused if his absence is for the
purpose of observing a religious holy day that is consistent with
his/her creed or belief.
5. Authorized school sponsored activities: A student may
receive excused absences for participating in off-campus school
related activities.
6. Judicial/Official Governmental appearance: The
administration shall require the presentation of an appropriate court

13
document, subpoena, etc, which indicates that a student should
appear.
The administration may review reasons other than those above and
determine that they, also, may be excused.

Unexcused Absence

An absence in excess of 30 minutes for any reason other than those

listed under “Excused Absences” shall be classified as unexcused.
Absences that are initially classified as unexcused may be changed to
excused if the parents send a note (stating the reason) within one
school day after the absence.

An unexcused absence is an absence that has not been approved,

such as traveling for vacation during school days.

Early Dismissal (FOR A DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT, ETC.)

Every attempt should be made to schedule appointments outside of

the school day. There may be times, however, when an appointment
must be scheduled during the school day. Students must present a
parent/guardian note or parents should send an email to the teacher
prior to the start of the school day.

Early Dismissal Due to Illness

If a student becomes ill while at school, he/she will need to obtain a

timed pass to the nurse’s office from the class teacher. Under no
circumstances are students to leave school without proper teacher
authorization. A student leaving school for any reason must sign out
at the Front Office. Failure to follow the procedure may lead to
disciplinary action. Parents/Guardians will be notified immediately
and asked to pick-up their student if warranted at the front office.

Traveling Students

Students traveling on school-sponsored trips are responsible for

contacting their teachers during the week prior to travel. They may
have to complete some make-up work prior to their travel. They will
be responsible for all previously announced assignments, projects and
exams upon their return. It is the decision of the student and the
family for students to participate in extracurricular travel, and
students may not request extensions to deadlines because of the
travel. All teachers will work with students to ensure a fair timeline
for make-up work.

14
Prior Arrangements Early Withdrawal

Kuwait American School strongly discourages students taking

extended vacations during the quarter or leaving school prior to the
normal closing date. Students missing classes lose essential
instruction and place increased demands on classroom teachers in
the areas of record-keeping, administering make-up work, etc.
During the planning for an extended absence, parents and students
should understand that teachers cannot possibly, in all cases, pre-
teach the lessons nor provide make-up assignments to cover all the
material that will be missed.

However, occasions arise where extended absences are necessary.

When this is the case, the school will make every reasonable attempt
to reduce the damage to a student’s educational program. In order
that students and parents may not be misled and suffer possible
disappointment, it must be clearly understood that:

1. A letter of request to the Principal, outlining reasons for the

absence, expected duration, and departure date must be written to
the school.

2. Teachers will state in writing on a Prior Arrangement Form the

student expectations and possible consequences that would help
minimize the potential harm to the student’s final grade. An
indication of willingness on the part of the teacher to assist the
student is not to be construed as a promise that the student will
receive full credit. The responsibility for completion of all make-up
requirements rests with the student.
TARDY POLICY

KAS teachers and administration will work with parents and

students to improve punctuality. Our goal is for students to attend
each class on time. Excessive tardiness will affect a student’s
enrollment standing for the following school year.

The tardy policy adheres to the following procedures:

1. Arriving late to first period

▪ Students must receive an admittance slip from the Front

Office.
▪ If arriving after7:45 A.M.students will be marked as tardy.

2. Reaching 6 tardies to school

15
▪ Students will be referred to theCoordinator.
▪ Parents will be contacted.

3. Reaching 10 tardies

▪ Students will be referred to the Coordinator.

▪ Parents will be contacted for a verbal warning.

4. Continued tardiness

▪ Students will receive a referral to theCoordinator.

▪ Parents will be contacted regarding a mandatory
meeting.
▪ The student will be placed on a class attendance record where
attendance will be closely monitored. Failure to be in class on time
will result in an in-school suspension along with another parent
meeting.

Tardy Code of Conduct

Students arriving late to class are expected to adhere to the following
procedures:

➡ Enter the room quietly.

➡ Refrain from greeting friends or making noise of any kind.

➡ Proceed directly to their seat.
➡ Quickly and quietly take out materials and demonstrate a keen
intention to catch up on the day’s lesson.
➡ See the teacher after class to determine any missed work.

and learning environment while within the jurisdiction of the school.
The school retains jurisdiction of students while on school premises,
while engaged in school-sponsored activities, and during other school
designated times and or other school related locations.

The school will make every attempt to enlist and inform

parents/guardians in all disciplinary matters. The school reserves
the right to impose disciplinary consequences to ensure a safe and
orderly teaching and learning environment where teachers can
effectively teach, and all students can learn well.

18
In-or out-of-school suspension will result in unexcused absences
being recorded. During the period of suspension, students will be
provided with work to do to maintain the skill level.

All discipline hearings and decisions are to be free from color,

religion, race, gender, background, and national origin biases and
prejudice. They are to be fair, impartial, and consistent.

Students with multiple behavioral infractions will be placed on

Behavioral Probation. Students under Behavioral Probation may not
represent or attend any sports teams, councils and graduations and
may not be accepted to return to KAS the following year.

The following disciplinary process is recommended.

Step 1: Teacher Verbal Reprimand

This is typically a verbal discussion with the student describing what
inappropriate behavior/conduct the student has chosen to engage in
that has violated one or more of the disciplinary guiding principles.
For extreme inappropriate behavior/conduct, a student may be
immediately sent to the Coordinator/ School Principal.

Step 2: Teacher Behavior/Conduct Modification

When a student does not respond to verbal reprimands, the teacher
will utilize behavior modification procedures that are appropriate for
the age of the student and the inappropriate behavior/conduct.The
School Principal, Coordinator, Counselor, and Parents/Guardians
may become involved at this stage.

Step 3: Coordinator / Principal’s Conference

After the initial steps have been taken with no significant change in a
student’s inappropriate behavior/conduct, the teacher may refer the
disruptive student to the Coordinator. The Coordinator will take
additional administrative steps which may include the assignment of
detention.

Step 4: Parent/Guardian Conference

The purpose of a meeting consisting of the Student, Teacher(s),
Counselor, Coordinator, Principal and Parents/Guardians is to
discuss the inappropriate and disruptive behavior/conduct and
develop a strategy for preventing future inappropriate and disruptive
behavior/conduct from occurring.

19
A discussion of possible consequences for future inappropriate and
disruptive behavior/conduct will also be addressed with a possible
Behavior/Conduct Agreement being considered for implementation.
Monitoring tools, such as a printed shared responsibility (i.e.,
student, teacher, parent, etc.) sheet should be developed and
accepted be all participants.

Step 5: In-School Suspension

The Principal may consider assigning a student to In-School
Suspension when all previous attempts to correct a student’s
inappropriate and disruptive behavior/conduct have not been
successful.

Step 6: Out –of- School Suspension

When the above disciplinary steps do not resolve the student’s
inappropriate and disruptive behavior conduct, the Principal may
consider and implement an out-of-school suspension. The parents
will be immediately notified of an out-of school suspension.
A detailed record justifying the out-of-school suspension (i.e.,
academics, attendance, and behavior/conduct records, previous
actions, times and dates of parent conferences, etc.) will be kept.
1. Out-of-school suspensions are served at home and students
will be allowed to make up academic work in any content areas
missed as per makeup policy.
2. Any project or paper that had been assigned prior to the days
of suspension, due on one of the days of suspension, will be accepted
on the first day after the suspension is served with no penalty
incurred.
A behavioral contract will be prepared for the student that specifies
the disciplinary consequences for continued misbehavior of the
student. If a behavior contract already exists, it will be reviewed and
modified to avoid future inappropriate behavior/conduct.

Damage to School Property

Anyone who accidentally or intentionally destroys or damages

anything on campus must pay the cost for the repairs and/or
replacement of damages. Students who are caught in the act of

Students are expected to use school IT devices safely in the classroom.

In cases when accidents occur and a student drops a device, the
device will be checked by the IT specialist immediately.

If no damage is done, then there is no consequence.

If there is damage, the IT specialist will take it to be fixed. A bill of the

maintenance charges will be billed to the student/teacher responsible
as per the charges required.

Care of Property

Common sense precautions should always be taken to safeguard

personal articles, which you bring to school. Some specific reminders:

• Students should not leave personal articles, such as books,

purses, or clothing unattended for even a brief time. This provides an
open invitation to lose them by mistaken identity or outright theft.
Study areas, the playground, restrooms, and other crowded areas are
places where particular care should be exercised.

• When attending an after-school activity, students need to take

their books, clothing and other personal material and equipment they
intend to take home with them. You cannot return to your classroom
after the school activity.

21
• It is recommended that students clearly mark their personal
belongings with their name or other identifying mark so there cannot
be any dispute of property ownership.

• Mobile phones, money, and valuables should not be brought to

school at all.

• Students are expected to pay for lost and/or damaged books.

Final report cards and transcripts will not be given or mailed until lost
and/or damaged books; equipment, etc. are paid for.

• The School assumes no responsibility for safeguarding personal

property.

• Lost property can be located in the administration.

Online Coursework in Elementary

All grade levels in Elementary are subscribed to a math and a reading

website.

Students in Grades 1-5 will be responsible for completing math

homework online program (ALEKS Math) using their provided
username and password. This online practice will count towards their
homework grade and will be reflected in their report cards.
Students can access this through a computer with internet
connection or an I-pad/tablet. The teacher will be informing the
student in class as well as via the weekly newsletter of their weekly
assignments.

Teachers through their own login may access students’ results

through the website and track their progress. By tracking their
students, teachers will be able to spot where students have difficulty
and aid remedial instruction for enhanced learning.

Also, all students in Grades 1-3 will be responsible for their online
leveled reading program- Reading A-Z, referred to as RAZ. Students
will be assigned a reading level by the teacher and are requested to
read a minimum of two books every week and answer related
questions online. Teachers will log in to review students’ progress and
move up their levels as per their progress. Usernames and passwords
will be provided at the beginning of the school year. RAZ will also be
reflected in the students’ report cards under Language Arts.
All students in Grades 4 and 5 will be using EXACT PATH program
which is linked to their level through map assessment.

Students may find online coursework posted in the following apps:

Google Classroom: Here students mayview daily uploads of classwork

and/or home practice work and the weekly newsletter.

Class Dojo: May be used for parent and teacher communication, acts

as a social media platform where pictures and announcements will be

posted.

25
Grading and Reporting Policies/Procedures

Academic progress reports are sent out quarterly for parents. In

addition, parent can regularly monitor their student's progress by
logging into the KAS online grading database: Jupiter-SIS.

Grade Promotion Policy

The reporting style in Elementary is a standard based reporting

system which means instead of percentages; students receive a score
of 1-4 to evaluate their achievement on specific standards.
Arabic language, Islamic Studies, and Holy Quran are still reporting
using percentages.

In order to promote children to the following academic year, ten

specific standards are taken into consideration, which the school
deems to be the critical standards.

The sum of the scores achieved on the ten critical standards is

averaged.

The following are the ten critical standards considered for Grades 1-2.
Students are promoted to the next grade level if the average is higher
than 2.0.

additional academic assistance outside the normal school day. The
intent is to provide students with individualized instruction tailored to
meet a student’s individual academic needs. Policies and guidelines
include the following:

The program will occur within the KAS school instructional facilities
(this does not include teacher residences) and it will be conducted
2:45 pm.

27
Extra-Curricular Activities

A range of After School Club Activities will be offered to all of our

Elementary students.
After School Club Activities take place twice a year each for a period of
5 sessions. They start at 2.15pm and end at 3.15pm.
KAS offers fun educational activities where students can explore and
learn through different activities.

BUS TRANSPORTATION POLICY

● Bus transportation is available to all students. Buses to specific

locations may not be available depending on distance and lack of bus
students in the same area.

● The annual round-trip transportation fee is dependent on

location. Please see the accounting office for more information.

● Parents/Guardians must sign the Safety Rules and Regulations

before KAS will permit a student to ride a school bus.

● In the case of any cancellations, please note that transportation

fees are non-refundable.

● Registration and payment for buses is at the Accounting Office.

● Parents are required to bring their student in the morning of the

first day of school.

TRANSPORTATION SAFETY RULES AND REGULATIONS

● A bus driver will not wait more than 3 minutes at the approved
pick-up location after the pick-up time has been established. If a
student is late this will cause the driver to be late for the next student
thus delaying the bus’s arrival to school. Please make sure your
student(s) are punctual to avoid any inconvenience.
● Students not seated on their assigned bus at the scheduled
dismissal time will need to secure another way home on that day.
Under no circumstances will buses be held beyond the scheduled
dismissal time nor will they return to the school for students who
miss their bus.

28
● Grades 1 to 12 students board their buses each day at 2:15 pm.
It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to be home to receive their
child after school.
● All students are to remain seated at all times when the bus is in
motion. No student is allowed to sit in the front seat beside the driver
due to additional safety precautions.
● The student is not allowed to stop the bus at any time after the
departure of the bus from home or the school.
● The student is required to ride on their assigned bus. If a
student will not be riding on their assigned bus on a particular day,
they must bring a signed letter from their parent/guardian addressed
to the Administration requesting the change.
● Any inappropriate behavior while on a bus will not be tolerated.
Students choosing to engage in any inappropriate and disruptive
behavior/conduct while on a bus will receive one (1) warning. If the
inappropriate and disruptive behavior/conduct persists, the bus
driver will notify the Administration who will intervene.
● Students may not eat or drink on the bus. Water is allowed.
● All students riding school buses are subject to the school
discipline code and related disciplinary consequences which may lead
into removing the student from the bus permanently with no fees
refund.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Student safety is a top priority at KAS. Emergency procedures are

posted at the doorways of all rooms in the school building. The school
staff has been trained in the school’s emergency procedures and
students begin emergency procedure training on the first week of the
school year, with regular unannounced drills throughout the school
year. These drills include, courtyard fire drill, out of school fire drill,
and lock down drills. There are emergency grab bags with the
necessary materials in every classroom and office at KAS should there
be an emergency.

SCHOOL CLINIC
Students requiring immediate medical attention should report to the
school clinic. The nurse will immediately notify parents/guardians
when a student needs special attention. Frequent trips by individual
students will be monitored and parents/guardians will be notified if
there appears to be unnecessary visits to the clinic. If dismissal from

29
school is necessary, the nurse will contact the parent/guardian and
the coordinator.

Health Services
The following completed health documents are required for admission
into KAS:
1. School Health Record (doctor card)
2. Pink BCG Card
3. Current vaccination records
4. KAS student medical file.
Health services at KAS are provided at selected times by a full-time
professional registered nurse who is available throughout the year.
Parents/guardians will receive health documents, which must be
completed and submitted to the nurse prior to the student’s first day
of class. Students will not be permitted to attend class without all
health documents having been turned in to the school nurse.
Students who are ill must not leave the building without authorization
from coordinator.
Under no circumstances should any medication whatsoever be taken
outside the health room or without the nurse’s direct supervision.
Parents/guardians should not send students to school who are ill (i.e.,
elevated temperatures, etc.).
All parents/guardians must submit an emergency form for each
student. This is also a requirement for admission.
All students are required by law to have certain vaccinations in order
to attend school. Failure to have them completed may mean exclusion
from school until they are completed.

Any students with contagious illnesses must stay home and may only
return to school with a doctor’s note showing the illness is gone and
may not affect other students’ health.

Student Support Services

Counseling Services
The prime focus of the counselor is to support student's social,
emotional and academic development. Counseling services work in
partnership with students, teachers, administration, and parents to
help your child to have a successful and positive school experience.

30
Some of the duties of the counselor are to:
- Counsel students individually maintaining appropriate
confidentiality
- Consult with parents on issues related to their child's learning
and development
- Refer students to and work closely with external experts in
supporting students

PARENT COMMUNICATION

Communication between the home and the school is extremely

important. There are many ways in which we communicate with
parents/guardians throughout the school year. Parents/Guardians
may request an appointment to speak with their child’s teacher(s), the
coordinator and/or the Principal.
Open House occurs at the beginning of the school year and is a time
to learn about the curriculum and student behavior/conduct
expectations. Report Cards indicate your student’s academic and
social/emotional progress and are sent home on a regular basis. The
school uses the Jupiter Online System where parents/students can
be updated daily with lesson plans, assessments, grades and more.

Jupiter SIS

Jupiter is a student information system used at KAS. KAS has high

expectations of students and believes students, parents, and KAS staff
share the responsibility for nurturing a student’s learning experience.
We encourage our parents to keep track of their child’s academic
progress through this online system. Jupiter can be used to

- Access your child’s assignments and exam dates.

- Check your child’s grades regularly.
- Receive emails with school and class information.
- Verify your child’s attendance record.
- And much more……

Note: Jupiter will usually be blocked two weeks prior to Quarterly

Report Cards day. Quarterly report cards will be distributed on Parent
Conference Day.

PARENT/GUARDIAN-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences are scheduled throughout the

school year. However, both teachers and parents/guardians may at
any time schedule meetings. All parents/guardians are strongly
encouraged to contact their child’s teachers if they have any questions
or concerns. It is very important for the integrity of the educational

31
process that this simple procedure be followed to maintain and
nurture a positive and supportive family-school partnership. Please
consult the School Calendar to identify formal Parent-Teacher
Conference dates.

PARENT/GUARDIAN-COORDINATOR/COUNSELOR CONFERENCES

Parent/Guardian- Coordinator meetings are specifically available to

discuss everyday social and academic issues. Meetings may be
scheduled through the administration.

PARENT/GUARDIAN- PRINCIPAL CONFERENCES

Meetings between Parent/Guardian and the Principal may be

scheduled at any school time and for any reason.

CONTACTING ADMINISTRATION AND TEACHERS

Personal contact is one of the most popular and effective forms of

communication.
Our administrative staff is available every working day from 7am until
3pm.
If parents wish to contact a teacher, we kindly request that they leave
a message with administration that will be forwarded to teachers by
the end of the school day. Parents can be assured that a return call
will be forthcoming from the teacher by the end of the next day.
All requests for curriculum and grades are to be addressed to the
teachers and not the administration.
We regret that teachers cannot be called to the telephone from their
classroom to meet with parents without a previous appointment or at
the start of the day when teachers are with students and preparing
their classes.

Parents are kindly requested not to contact teachers at home or on

their mobile phones.

Parents may email teachers regarding schoolwork through the

teachers’ school email accounts. Teachers will reply within 24 hours,
except at weekends

We also believe that every adult must feel safe and secure with a
positive sense of well-being at our school. The school is proud of its

32
welcoming atmosphere through gentle enquiry and positive
discussions. Whilst welcoming parents and their enquiries at any time
during the school day, parents who disrespect the calmness will be
asked to make an appointment at a later time.
