A reaction to the excerpt, “Why do They Say that Our English is Bad” by Grace M. Saqueton.

How can college students forget a simple English rule, when in fact, English has been

continuously taught to us Filipino students as early as preschool? This is the question I came up with

while reading the excerpt of Grace M. Saqueton. I realized that it is evident on social media that

Filipinos struggle to comprehend and speak in English. Unfortunately, it reflects on our Philippine

education system and the Filipino teachers who strive to teach students in schools. I believe the

excessive use of social media by Filipinos can be the biggest reason to why even college students in

our country, struggle to keep their English, grammatically correct.

Social media can be a destroyer to a student's academic work. It may cause students to

lose focus on subject lectures, which could lead in little to no retained knowledge. Based on

experience, I noticed that those students who find the English subject difficult are mostly those who

are active and naughty on social media. Whereas, the social media could influence a student to be

foolish. There are existing jokes or puns on social media that students can bring in their academics. It

is an addiction that limits students to learn, and forget simple English rules because their minds may

be occupied by social media contents.

To summarize everything, Filipino students are capable in long-term understanding the

English language as this subject is being taught to Filipinos at such a young age. However, the

addiction to social media can destroy the Filipinos' capability in speaking, writing, and reading in

English. As students, it is also our job to learn by ourselves, and be responsible enough for us to

achieve an abundant future.
