I- The Present Simple

Use:
We use the present simple to talk about habits or routines, schedules, and facts
Habit or Routine: I exercise every day. / I always have lunch at 1p.m
Schedule: She starts work at 8 o’clock. / The train leaves at 10 a.m.
Fact: It rains a lot in April./ the earth revolves around the sun.
Form:
1. Add -s to the verb for he, she, it, and singular subjects.
He drives to work.
She works in a bank.
The shop opens at 8:00 a.m
2. Add -es to verbs ending in -sh, -ch, -ss, -x, and –z

II- The present continuous

Use:
We use the present continuous (also called present progressive) to show that an ongoing action is happening now, either
at the moment of speaking or now in a larger sense. The present continuous can also be used to show that an action is
going to take place in the future.
Form:
1. The present continuous is formed using to be in the present tense (am/is/are) + present participle (verb + ing)
We are doing a grammar review now.
I’m staying here for only one month.
He’s meeting some friends after work.

2. Questions are indicated by inverting the subject and am/is/are.


Are you studying now?
Are they working on any special projects at school?
Is he visiting his parents next weekend?

3. Negatives are made with not.
They are not (aren’t) watching TV at the moment.
He is not (isn’t) working this weekend.
I am not (‘m not) studying to become a teacher.

III- The Simple Past

Use:
The simple past tense is used to show that a completed action took place at a specific time in the past.
It is also used to list a series of completed actions in the past.
John Cabot sailed to America in 1498
Yesterday, I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.
Form:
1. For regular verbs, add - ed to the root form of the verb (or just -d if the root form already ends in an e)
2. If a verb ends in consonant and -y, you take off the y and add -ied. But if the word ends in a vowel and -y, you add -ed.

IV- Past Progressive (continuous)

Form
We form the past progressive with was/were + -ing:
1. Statement: I was working.
2. Negative: She was not reading.
3. Question: Were you listening to me?

Use
1. We use the past progressive to say that something was in progress (going on) around a particular past time.
“What were you doing at eight o’clock yesterday?”
I was watching TV at eight.

2. We often use the past progressive to express an action in progress interrupted by another action.
As I was walking down the road, I saw Patrick.
The phone rang while I was having dinner.

3. To describe two actions that were in progress at the same time in the past:
I was preparing dinner while Peter was working upstairs.
