BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Aimed at exploring the factors that contribute to academic pressure and

stress among Grade 10 students taking English 10 subject in Villanueva National High
School. English 10 is a critical subject that prepares students for higher education and
career opportunities, making it crucial for students to excel in this subject.

The study aims to identify the common stressors that impact the academic
performance of Grade 10 Emerald students and their coping mechanisms. The pressure
of academic performance can cause stress and anxiety among students, resulting in
several negative impacts such as physical and mental health problems, decreased
academic performance, and loss of motivation. The study will contribute to
understanding the academic pressure and common stressors of English 10 students,
providing insights into the factors contributing to student success.

With the increasing competition in the academic realm, students are faced
with various stresses that affect their academic performance and overall well-being. In
particular, students in English 10, a critical stage in language development, experience
a unique set of academic pressures and stressors.

This study aims to examine the common stressors encountered by

Grade10 Emerald students in Villanueva National High School, specifically in their
English 10 course. Factors that contribute to academic pressure may include high
expectations from parents and society, academic workload, examinations and deadlines,
and peer competition. The academic demands of English 10, like mastering language
proficiency and writing skills, may also add to the pressures felt by the students.

Moreover, stressors that affect the students' mental health, such as

anxiety, depression, and social pressure, may negatively impact their academic
performance. Without proper support and guidance, students may struggle in managing
these stressors which can then lead to a decline in academic achievement, self-esteem
and overall mental and physical health.
