Brief History of Badminton

Ti Jian Zi ang laro na galing sa China na sinasabing lolo ng badminton kagaya ito
ng larong sipa sa Pilipinas. Nkarating ng Europe ang laro na ginamitan ng pamalo
kapalit ng mga paa na tinawag na Jeu de Volant na ang ibigsabihin ay flying game in
french.

Nung 1600s, ang Badminton ay kilala sa tawag na Battledore and shuttlecock,


involving 2 persons hitting shuttlecock towards each other as many times as
possible before it hit the ground. Ito ay dating isang upper-class na laro sa
Europe kabilang ang England.

According to " A Brief History of Badminton from 1870 to 1940" na sinulat ni Betty
Uber, ang badminton ay nilaro ng mga British military officers noong 1850's sa mga
panahong yon. Dito nadagdagan ng net ang larong ito at dahil ito ay naging popular
sa Garrison Town of Pun, tinawag itong Poona.

Nung around 1870's naman dinala ng mga retired british military officers ang laro
pabalik sa England mula sa India at naging tanyag. Noong 1873, ipinakilala ng Duke
ng Beaufort ang sport sa kanyang mga kaibigan sa country estate, "Badminton House"
sa Gloucestershire na kanyang pagmamay-ari, mula noon ang sport na ito ay tinawag
na Badminton.

1875 – A badminton club in Folkestone, England was started by retired


officers from British India.

1887 – J. H. E. Hart of the Bath Badminton Club standardized the rules.

1893 – The Badminton Association of England published the first set of rules like
the modern rules that were published in a house called “Dunbar” at Six Waverley
Grove, Portsmouth, England (September 13, 1893).

1898 – The first official world badminton tournament was held in the town of
Guildford in Surrey, England back (March 10th, 1898).

1899 – The first unofficial all-England badminton championships for men and the
first badminton tournament for women.

1934 – The Badminton World Federation (BWF; originally the InternationalBadminton


Federation), the world governing body of the sport was formedwith England,
Scotland, Wales, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, NewZealand, and the
Netherlands as the founding members. Badminton is also popular in Malaysia,
Indonesia, Japan, and Denmark.
