SQUAD AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

BASIC FORMATIONS

R
Throughout our deployments, we use formations used by most professional

O
armies in order to make organization quicker and easier, these will be used by your
squad leader in order to increase combat effectiveness within the squad.

FT
Here are the following formations:

SQUAD ROLES

Within every squad, members are given specific roles, tasks and weapons,
this will increase their combat efficiency since the squad must be able to engage
and destroy the many different types of targets they are likely to meet on the
battlefield. The different weapons and roles the members have give the team a

R
balance of firepower, simplify the logistics of supplying ammunition, and vary the
load each Soldier has to carry. The heavier the weapon, the less other gear or

O
ammunition a Soldier can bear and the less they can maneuver.

FT
Listed below are the following roles for a basic infantry squad:

- Squad Leader (SL): This role is responsible for everything the squad
PE
does—or fails to do. They are tactical leaders and leads by example, their
primary objective is to issue orders to their squad mates and to maintain
organization within the squad/fireteam.
of
- Radioman (RM): This role provides and maintains communications. They
help the squad by issuing requests to other units or to the HQ whether it’s for
reinforcements, resupply or air support.
ty

- Automatic Rifleman (AR): This role provides overwatch and suppressive

er

fire through force multiplication. The most casualty producing person in a

fireteam, in terms of firepower and maneuverability. An automatic rifleman
is equipped with a light machine gun or an IAR.
op

- Designated Marksman (DM): This role supports the squad by providing

accurate long-range shots at valuable targets as needed, thus extending the
Pr

effective tactical reach of the fireteam/squad. They are usually equipped

with a DMR or a bolt-action sniper rifle.

- Driver (DV): This role’s primary objective is to operate vehicles that help in
executing the squad’s mission efficiently, they primarily provide
transportation or mobile cover for the squad, when the situation needs it,
4
Cover Page
Ari-arian ng Pilipinas
they can either dismount or operate a vehicle-mounted HMG to help out the
squad in combat.

- Rifleman (RF): This role is the backbone of every squad, they are versatile
and are able to fill in in many tasks/objective that a squad may need to be
accomplished, their primary objective is to engage the enemy and eliminate

R
them through close quarters combat or other tactics, they also provide
support for other roles within the squad.

O
FT
● UNIT-SPECIFIC ROLES

There are specific squad roles that primarily cater to the mission and
objectives of different units within PEFTOR; therefore these roles are only
PE
used by squads in certain units and cannot be used as a whole in other
squads.

● 210th Tactical Air “Might in the Sky” Wing

of
- Rotary Wing Pilot (RW): This role only operates rotary wing aircraft, they
are primarily used for transport, aerial reconnaissance, evacuation and
ty

ground support.
er

- Fixed Wing Pilot (FW): This role only operates fixed wing aircraft, they are
primarily used for air superiority, ground support and aerial escort.
op

● 818th Combat “Kidlat” Group and 9th Light Reaction Company

“The Cleaners”
Pr

- Breacher (BR): This role specializes in close-quarters combat/battle, they are

primarily used to breach rooms and to open up battles within the area, they
are equipped with either an assault carbine, submachine gun or a shotgun.

5

● 25th Scout Ranger Company “Bloodhounds”

- Sniper (SP) : This is role is different from the Designated Marksman since a
sniper's primary function is to provide detailed surveillance from a
concealed position and, if necessary, to reduce the enemy's combat ability by
neutralizing high-value targets (especially officers and other key personnel)

R
and in the process pinning down and demoralizing the enemy.

O
SQUAD COMPOSITION

FT
In each squad, there must be a set amount of roles in order to increase
versatility and to increase the effectiveness of the squad, composition of one’s
squad depends on the unit/mission/operation it will partake in.
PE
For now, only two types of squad composition will be presented below:

BASIC TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES

R
SMALL UNIT TACTICS

O
Small Unit Tactics (SUT) are used in order to increase firepower and combat

FT
effectiveness of members, these can also provide tactical decisions that members
can use to thier advantage.

- Snake Line (aka The Conga Line)

PE
of
ty
er

The Snake Line is used when moving through narrow terrain while
op

concentrating firepower together with the squad, this is mostly used in rural and
woodland terrain as wide formations might make members more likey become lost
in the area and couldn’t find their way back to the squad, members in front will
Pr

have to aim forward with their squad leader while the rear must be guard by a
member to avoid any flanks initiated by the enemy.

22
Cover Page
Ari-arian ng Pilipinas
- Tactical Retreat

R
O
FT
PE
Tactical Retreat is a used to effectively retreat from an overwhelming enemy
force; the farthest squadmate must withdraw first while the second squadmate
provides cover fire, each member must alternate between these roles unti they
reach a safe area. (This tactic was inspired by the TBA, an Canadian PMC)
of

- Foward Assault
ty
er
op
Pr

Forward Assault is a tactic where a squad rushes into an exposed area on the
enemy’s position while shooting at the enemy, this must be only done if all of the
criteria are met: provided supporting fire, near the enemy’s position and enemy is
disorganized and cannot return fire.

23
Cover Page
Ari-arian ng Pilipinas
TACTICAL MANUVERS

Tactical Maneuver is used by maneuver warfare theorists to refer to

movement by forces to gain advantageous position relative to the enemy. The idea
of using rapid movement to keep an enemy off balance is as old as war itself.

R
- Fire and Movement

O
FT
PE
Fire and movement is a tactical manuver where the first squad suppresses
of
the enemy by firing from behind cover, while the second advances. After a short
time, the advancing unit will halt behind cover and open fire, allowing the first unit
to advance. The two squads will repeat the cycle until the enemy is eliminated.
ty
er

- Delaying Ambush:
op
Pr

The Delaying Ambush is a tactic wherein soldiers who are conducting the
ambush are given a simple set of instructions: engage approaching units, retreat
when shot at, and return and engage again.

24

Ari-arian ng Pilipinas
CHAPTER 5

BASIC CLOSE-QUARTERS COMBAT

R
PRINCIPLES OF ATTACK

O
Close-quarter combat is a fast-paced and incredibly hectic form of combat,

FT
the chances of casualties are high and chance of a failed mission is even higher as
the enemy might have enough time to escape, kill hostages or set off bombs.
These principles will help you organize yourselves and execute the mission
efficiently.

- Surprise
PE
Surprise gives the attacker the upper hand against an opponent that is
of
unaware, and therefore unprepared for the impending attack. Understand that
surprise, owes its existence to sound tactics and techniques. Surprise is a product of
stealth, stealth is a product of noise and light discipline.
ty
er

- Speed
Speed compliments surprise nicely, in that if you have achieved effective
surprise, speed will ensure that the enemy never recovers from the element of
op

surprise.
Seize the initiative, keep the pressure on.
Pr

- Efficiency
Effciency continues to further destabilize the enemy’s posture, robbing them
of the chance to ever effectively overcome the juggernaut of surprise and speed.

25
Cover Page
Ari-arian ng Pilipinas
- Awareness
You have to maintain security all around your battle space. If you are
moving through a building with many rooms, it is never likely that you will have
enough men to leave one behind in each room as you move through your objective,
be on the lookout for anything as the defenders might launch an ambush on you.

R
BREACHING

O
Breaching makes you engage the defenders in rooms, it is important to keep

FT
up with your squad and getting your gun ready as fights can get hectic real fast.

- Opening Part

PE
Once the room has been breached, you must quickly assess the room’s
environment and find the most efficient route to engage the enemy with minimal
risk; if there are no nearby hostages, you can throw a frag grenade in there in order
to soften up the defense in order to eliminate the defenders quickly, don’t forget to
of
always check your corners before breaching a room.
ty

- Single-stack Formation
er
op
Pr

The Single-stack system is less effective than the Double-stack as the

possibility of members getting shot is higher in this formation. This system may
only be utilized on corner-orientated rooms or open door-ways. members of the
squad would transition between hook and cross, a hook breach is where members
would simply trail around the door frame, making a fish-hook effect.

26
Cover Page
Ari-arian ng Pilipinas
- Double-stack Formation

R
O
FT
The Double-stack formation is primarily used in center-orientated rooms,
PE
members will execute a cross-breach during insertion, cross breaching is when
members will cross over to the other side, making a X in the process.
