REASONS FOR DEVELOPMENT:
Inter arch space is defined as vertical space between maxillary and
mandibular arches under conditions of vertical dimensions that must be specified.

A. Inter arch space is referred to as Inter ridge distance in patients who do

not have teeth (edentulous patients) and it is “the distance between upper
and lower edentulous arches”.

B. Inter arch space is also referred to as Inter occlusal distance which is

“the distance between upper and lower teeth” in partially or fully dentate
patients.

This Inter arch space is an important factor for prosthodontic rehabilitation

in edentulous, partially edentulous and fully dentulous cases.

In the current knowledge, there are no gauges or instruments available to

measure the vertical space that exists between the upper and lower arches or
upper or lower teeth. Hence, a diagnostic tool has been designed to alleviate
the errors and reduce the chair side appointments and time of the patients
and the dentists. This diagnostic tool helps to measure the precise distance
between the upper and lower arches or the upper and lower teeth for further
treatment modalities.

Aims and objectives:

To design a tool which helps to measure the precise distance between the
upper and lower arches or the upper and lower teeth for further treatment
modalities.
The prototype:

For the ease of explanation the instrument has been divided into various
parts:

1. Non cutting blades

2. Pivot joint
3. Measuring scale with locking device
4. Non working end / instrument handle.

The “The vertical space analyzer” has two blades with working end (handle) on
one side and non working end (handle) on the other end. The two blades are held
together in the centre with a pivot joint. At the tip of the working ends of the
blades, troughs of 12 mm are located. These troughs are placed on the upper and
lower anterior teeth in case of dentulous arch and in case of edentulous ridges these
troughs engage the arches to measure the inter arch distance. The two non working
blades end with one finger hole each. These finger holes allow comfortable grasp
to close and open the instrument. One non working end holds a “U” shaped scale
with marking on it from 0mm to 90mm with serrated edges facing downwards , the
other handle has small locking device with serrations to engage the other handle
and locks it at the readings gotten in the patients mouth.

USES:
 As a diagnostic aid, “The vertical space analyzer” can help achieve
the precise interarch / inter occlusal distance. This leaves no room for
guess work or subjective measurements as is done at present.
 This device will reduce the time taken to measure the interarch / inter
occlusal distance distance, thus providing the clinicians a clinical aid
that can be used for the treatment planning in less chairside time.
 The device will reduce the number of appointments to half, which
otherwise normally increases the patient visit at least by two fold. This
reduces the patients’ anxiety and unnecessary visits to the
clinics/hospital thus building a greater rapport and trust with the
clinician thus improving the patient and dentists community at large.
 The device is cost effective, can be sterilized and reused.
