tired eyes If dark circles and puffy lids are
the first things to greet you in the
mirror each morning, there’s help.
Try adopting a few new routines
to help wake up the eye area, and
you’ll be looking fresh as a daisy.
TEXT JESSICA DOSTIE
What causes
tired-looking eyes?
The eye area, where the skin is
about four times thinner than on
the rest of the face, tends to high-
light not only lack of sleep, but
also stress and dehydration. The
appearance of dark circles, often
caused by dilated blood vessels, or
puffiness caused by fluid reten-
tion are classic signs. However,
there can be a range of causes for
these woes, both internal and
external, so if you have any spe-
cific concerns, don’t be afraid to
talk to your doctor about them.
Morning routine
e
Adopting an energizing morning routine can help combat the look of tired eyes.

air or a meditation session, then a cool shower. Next, do some light lymphatic drain-
age in the form of a facial massage. Using your fingers or a specially designed tool,
gently massage the eye contour outward from the inner corner of the eyes toward
the top of the ear. You can also stimulate the eye area by tapping with your fingertips
to encourage circulation. Finally, apply your eye cream or gel on clean skin by patting
it on gently with your ring finger—no harsh rubbing!

Helpful hints 5
1. It’s natural to think that a thicker layer of eye cream
means more dramatic results, but using too much can
backfire, causing clogged pores or getting into the eyes, 6
creating irritation. A pea-size amount is all you need.
2. When it comes to face washing, avoid using
hot water, which can exacerbate inflammation and
accentuate dark circles by dilating blood vessels.
If you’re feeling brave, try using cold water, which
can reduce swelling and constrict those vessels!
3. Do you spend hours in front of your computer or
phone screen? Don’t forget to take a well-deserved
break each hour to rest your precious peepers.
4. Stay well-hydrated by drinking enough water and
limiting your consumption of alcohol, caffeine and high- 7
sodium foods, which can lead to dehydrated skin.

SMART SPEAKER
Smart speakers that interact intui-
tively with your phone are increas-
ingly easy to use. In addition to
offering rich sound, these speakers
can connect with each other so you
can listen to your tunes as you move
around the house. The result is an
enjoyable personalized sound experi-
ence every time. Plus, some models
can even be used as an intercom,
making it possible to communicate
with people elsewhere in the house.

VACUUM & MOP
We didn’t think we could get any
luckier when smart vacuums appeared
on the cleaning scene. Boy, were
we wrong! One of our favourite tech
devices is a robot vacuum and mop
combo. These double-duty geniuses
map out your floor so they know
where to clean, then they get to work.
The latest models also avoid obsta-
cles, respond to voice commands,
offer personalized cleaning and are
even self-emptying.

SMART CAMERA
There is a growing supply of smart
cameras that allow us to monitor our
homes inside and out right from our
phone screen. Some are designed
with a speaker as well, so you can
talk to the person who’s just rung
your doorbell (there are smart door-
bells, too!), or comfort your pet. If
you’ve chosen a camera specifically
made for pet watching, in addition
to checking in on your furry compan-
ion, you can play a game using the
camera’s integrated laser pointer or
even drop a treat for them.

SMART AIR
PURIFIER
We can greatly improve the air
quality in our home by getting an
air purifier that filters dust parti-
cles, animal hair, pollen and other
allergens. Some models combine
this functionality with the ability
to cool or heat the room at the
same time. Smart models can be
controlled remotely via an app
and can offer additional purifica-
tion with ultraviolet light.

The latest generation of refrig-

so you can check the contents
