What I Need to Know

Music of East Asia contributes certain characteristics such as tonal system and cultural
influences. It is one of the oldest and most complex systems of music which is based on pentatonic
scale.
The music of Central, South Asia and Middle East is not just a form of entertainment but is
an essential element in many of their daily life activities. It plays a prominent part in most rituals.
Primarily, their music could be described as functional, as it serves a utilitarian purpose. It is often
stated that their music is a salad mixed in a bowl. In this lesson, you will know the reason behind
the statement. Together, we will conquer the Central, South Asia, Middle East and discover how
their music is connected with their religion, culture and beliefs.
The main objectives of this module are the following:
1. Listens perceptively to music of Central, South Asia and Middle East. (MU8WS-llc-h-2)
2. Analyzes musical elements of selected songs and instrumental pieces heard and performed.

3. Evaluates music and music performances using guided rubrics applying knowledge of musical
elements and style. (MU8WS-llc-h-8)

After going through this module you are expected to:


a. identify the origin of music of Central, South Asia and Middle East ;
b. Recognize through listening, the vocal music of India, Pakistan and Israel;
c. Determine the characteristic of Hindustani and Carnatic Music;
d. Describe the vocal music of India, Pakistan, Israel and
e. Appreciate the vocal music of India, Pakistan and Israel.

After we studied and explored East Asian music, we will now travel to Central, South Asia
and the Middle East and know more about their culture, religion and music. But before that, we will
take a glimpse on our Elements of Music that we will be needing soon to analyze their songs. When
we say elements of music we refer to the following;
1. Rhythm - Fast tempo - 4 beats/second
- Moderate tempo - 2 beat/second
- Slow tempo - 1 beat/second
2. Meter (Duple, Triple, Quadruple)
3. Texture – Monophonic- Melody alone
- Homophonic - Melody with instrument or accompaniment
- Polyphonic - two or more melodies sung at the same time
- Heterophonic - similar melodies at the same time
4. Timbre -Head voice, Throaty, Guttural, Nasal

What is It
Music is a vital part of Indian’s culture. Their music and religion are closely connected with
each other. Their music is based on the rituals in Indian religions which have been part of their
country’s growing culture.

The music of Pakistan represents the real culture of people- their love and hatred, their joys
and sorrows, their colorful ceremonies and festivities. Above all, it depicts the spiritual entity. It
highlights various selections of music from the entire world within the country. Pakistan is also
known for its unique vocals.

The Music of Israel is a combination of Jewish and non-Jewish music tradition. It is modal. This
means that harmony is not emphasized but rather included salient features such as melodic
complexity and ornamentation. Israel singers have distinctive vocal style. They sing with guttural
and throaty enunciation.

The Two Division of Jewish Music are:


1. Devotional- is a hymn which accompanies religious observances and rituals
● almost entirely about vocals.
