BRCGS FOOD SAFETY ISSUE 9 DRAFT

After first issue in 1998, BRCGS Food had changes with new versions in compliance
with legislations, food safety, quality, integrity and culture and now BRCGS Food
Ver.9 Draft has been opened for public comment.

All certificates issued against audits carried out prior to this date will be against Issue 8 and be valid for the
period specified on the certificate.

CHANGES IN BRCGS Food Safety Issue 9

• GFSI benchmarking criteria;


• Blended audits will be an option with a certification body risk assessment and remote documentation audit
will take part before on-site audit
• All BRCGS Food certified companies will have at least one unannounced audit within every 3 years’
program as a mandatory, unannounced audit program includes also blended audits
• Section 5.9 was added and valid only for animal primary conversion like red meat, poultry or fish
• Changes and additions about food safety and quality culture (1.1.2), authenticity (5.4), supplier

management (3.5), corrective and preventive actions (3.7), traceability (3.9), food defense (4.2), lay-out
plans (4.3), water safety (4.5), chemical control (4.9.1), wood (4.9.5), other physical contaminants (4.9.6),
hygiene and environmental monitoring (4.11), waste and surplus food (4.12/ 4.13); transportation (4.16)
• Staff awareness for unsafe or out of specification products/ raw materials
• Clarification for prerequisite programs and new requirements for on-site inspections
• New requirements in Food Safety Plan-HACCP for validations
• Consideration of changes to legislations
• Notification in case of any significant food safety, authenticity or legality incident, recall or food safety
withdrawal regulatory food safety non-conformity shall be done to BRCGS using BRCGS directory in 3
working days
• Site security which was under section 4.2 replaced to section 4.1
• New requirements for section 4.6 (Equipment) – purchase specifications for any new equipment, risk-ba-
sed perspective for installation of new equipment, requirement for static/ battery charging equipment etc.
• Additional requirement for X-ray testing equipment in section 4.10.3.5; and clarifications for magnet and
optical sorting equipment checks
• New clause was added about gravity separation, fluid bed or aspirators as 4.10.7
• Clarifications for understanding and implementation of clause 5.1.1 about new product development; 5.2.1
labelling control about artworks; 5.6 product testing and laboratory analyses; 5.8 pet food and animal feed,
6.1 operation controls, 6.2 labelling and pack control
• New requirements in section 5.3 Allergens about pet food and animal feed manufacturers;
• Clarification of 7.4.3 about washing work clothes
• New requirements and clarification of Section 8 – production risk zones (high risk, high care and ambient
high care)
• Clarifications about section 9 for traded goods
• E.g. If a company requests to be audited against section 9 and have more than one type of traded goods,
exclusion cannot be done for some of them as partly auditing of traded goods
• NCs related to section 9 will be included in calculation of final BRCGS Food Certificate grade
• If company has traded goods and does not want to be audited against section 9, this will be excluded in
the report
• It is expected that new voluntary modules will be developed and become available for use throughout the
life of Issue 9
