Science 10week 4.the Different Types of Plate Boundary
(G10_Q1_W4_MELC2)

The Earth’s lithosphere that contains the crust and upper mantle is made up of large plates or called tectonic
plates, that move slowly over time. It causes geologic events to happen along the boundaries such as
earthquakes, volcanoes and mountains. As the plates move it generates pressure or force on crustal rocks
called stress. The creation of Philippine archipelago, having 7,000 islands is one example of plate boundary
movement.
Activity 2(Copy the table below and write your answer on the paper.)
After guessing the directions of crustal movement, you deserve to eat your cookies now! And discover the
three types of plate boundaries. After reading, you list down and differentiate each type. Then identify also
the stress involved in each type of plate.

3 TYPES OF PLATE BOUNDARY
DIVERGENT BOUNDARY
It happens when two tectonic plates move away or separate from each other in opposite direction. It creates
earthquake and new crust from magma that rises up to the surface. Can you relate this event to the
movement of the cookie crust earlier?
As the two plates are pulled away from each other the
crustal rocks experience tensional stress. Divergent
boundary occurs at mid-ocean ridge (submerged
mountain range). The best-known example is the mid-
Atlantic ridge where North American plate and
Eurasian plate moves apart.
CONVERGENT BOUNDARY
It happens when two plates move towards each other. As
two plates collide, one plate sinks under the other which
is called subduction. Oceanic crust is usually forced down
the subduction zone where crust is destroyed. The stress
involve in this boundary is compressional stress. Did you
have the same motion in moving the cookie crust?
Our very own Taal volcano is an example of convergent boundary as Philippine plate and Eurasian plate
collide. Even the highest continental mountain called Himalayan mountain range is a result of converging
Indian and Eurasian plates.
TRANSFORM BOUNDARY
This happens when two plates slide horizontally past each other. It neither
create nor destroy crust. Thus, the rock movement on two
sides can generate friction and shearing stress.

Seatwork 2 (Write your answer on the paper. Copy the format provided in this module.)
Draw two plates and describe the movement in each type of plate boundary. REMEMBER to use arrows to
show the direction of motion. Write a sentence or short description of each movement.

Seatwork 3 Constructing Plate Boundaries
Create a 3-D Model using recyclable materials at home. Choose only one type of plate boundary you would
like to create.
