Define: recruitment

• _The process of finding and hiring the best-qualified candidate for a

job vacancy

Why businesses recruit

Replace employees who leave – why have these employees left the
business?

They are tired and fell over worked

They are annoyed at there boss

They haven’t got a promotion yet

They retired

They are pregnant

They are going to need more workers, supervisors, and more managers.

• When a business wants to recruit a new member of staff they will write a person
specification
• This outlines the:
– Personal qualities
– Qualifications
– Work experience
– Skills
• This is a wish list of qualities that the business would like the new member of staff to have

Job description – fill in the missing words

• As part of the recruitment process the business will also write a job description
• This describes the duties and responsibilities of the role

• It also describes what the new employee would do on a day-to-day basis

Methods of selection– fill in the missing words

• When the business has written the person specification and the job description they will

advertise the job

• Those applicants who wish to apply may be asked to fill in an application form

• This may be the application form of the company or a SAF (Standard application form)
• It helps the business to see if you can write well and it helps to compareapplicants for the
job

• A business may also ask applicant to send in their CVs so they can be attached to their

application forms

• A CV is a summary of the applicants working life to date

• Some businesses now ask for video CVs

Letter of application– fill in the missing words

• A business may ask an applicant for a job vacancy to include a “letter of application” with

their CV and application form

• This is also known as a cover letter

• This helps to give the business more information about your skills and experience and your

reasons for wanting to apply for the vacancy

Interviews – fill in the missing words

• A business may ask the shortlisted candidates to attend an interview

• This could be on the telephone (for a first interview)

• This may be face-to-face with one person from the business

• This may be a panel interview with a group of different managers and employees from the

business

Tests – fill in the missing words

• The business may require the shortlisted candidates for the job vacancy to complete a

personality test

• These can be applied in a straightforward way at the early stages of recruitment to screen-

out candidates who are likely to be unsuitable for the job.

• Aptitude and ability tests are designed to assess their intellectual performance

Group activities

• Some business may require their shortlisted candidates for the job vacancies to participate

in some group activities

• This may involve a role play game, a debate, a discussion or solving a problem as a team

• This helps the business to identify potential leaders and managers, and who works well in a

team

References

• All businesses will ask to see two references

• If you are a school leaver these may be from your ability or any groups you belong to

(scouts?)

• A reference is where another person who knows you in a professional capacity will vouch for

your ability to do the job

• The candidate will have to give their referees name and contact details to the business
