The Found Headline Poem

1. Open a blank document in Word. This will be the landing spot for all of the wording you
collect.
2. Open an internet browser tab to a news site. Much more interesting content can be
found on state and local sites than national ones, so start with WV regional and local
places. Alternatively, you might think of a topic and search titles related to that, like
fishing or dancing.
3. If you find a bit of wording, or perhaps even an entire headline that strikes you as funny,
weird, profound, or just interesting, copy and paste it into your Word document. Don’t
worry about the way that document looks right away, just make sure not to paste in
another headline or on top of one.
4. Search for more content, copying and pasting the ones you like.
5. When you have about a page full of headlines, start playing with how they look on the
screen. Do you want them all to be in the same kind and size of font or would you
prefer them to be just as they were found? Will you center the poem, have lines all over
the page, or perhaps left align it? Will you change the order of the items so that it makes
sense to you? Will you organize it into stanzas?
6. Have fun and be creative!
