Field Study 1 Mrs. Lorna Morales Angeles

ACTIVITY # 1

1. What is observation in education?

Observation in education refers to the process of systematically watching and
assessing students, teachers, or educational settings to gather information, make
judgments, and inform decision-making.

2. How can observing in the classroom help you as a future teacher?

Observing experienced teachers can provide future teachers with valuable
examples of effective teaching strategies, classroom management techniques,
and instructional methods. It offers real-world insights into what works in the
classroom. It also allows future teachers to gain an understanding of the dynamics
and complexities of a classroom environment. They can observe how students
interact with each other, respond to instruction, and engage with the learning
materials. By observing different teachers, future educators can see a variety of
teaching styles and approaches. This exposure helps them develop a more
comprehensive toolkit of teaching strategies that they can adapt to their own
teaching style. Effective classroom management is a crucial skill for teachers.
Observing how experienced teachers handle classroom discipline, routines, and
transitions can provide valuable lessons in maintaining a positive and productive
learning environment. Classroom observation enables future teachers to identify
the diverse needs of students, including those with different learning styles,
abilities, and backgrounds. This insight can inform lesson planning and
instructional differentiation.

3. What are the 3 questions to ask when observing? Explain the purpose of each.

• What is happening?
This question focuses on describing the observable aspects of the classroom
environment, teacher actions, and student behaviors. It encourages you to gather
objective data about the situation without making judgments. By answering this
question, you can document the facts of the observation accurately.

• Why is it happening?
This question delves into the underlying reasons or causes for the observed
behaviors and actions. It encourages you to analyze the factors influencing what
you see in the classroom. By answering this question, you can begin to understand
the motivations and drivers behind what is happening.

• What impact is it having?

This question focuses on the consequences and outcomes of what is happening in
the classroom. It encourages you to consider the effects of teacher actions and
student behaviors on the learning environment and student learning outcomes.
By answering this question, you can evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching and
learning processes.
