ABSTRACT

WAP - The Wireless Application Protocol - is a communication protocol and application

environment for the development of information resources, advanced telelphony services
and internet access from mobile devices.

By now, it settled that a WAP - like bridge is required for content from the net to
reach the wireless devices. It's also settled that competing standards like 1-mode will
either remain confined to their native markets are give into WAP sooner or later.

WAP therefore seems not about to die but to evolve. And , as the demand for
wireless data spurs the role out of GPRS and 3G networks, WAP will only again in
importance, not least because those who will provide those services and devices are also
the promoters of WAP.

That implies it will be a good idea to stick with or start WAP businesses
applications, content, services - and WAP professionals will certainly be in demand.

So, even if more capable handheld devices become available in the mean
time, WAP will be around and required for long time even in India's metro areas. Once
the metros move onto GPRS and 3G, GSM and WAP is expected to move progressively
towards semi-urban and rural areas and flourish their, through new business models and
applications.
