Figure 1. Three-Phase Wye (Star), Four-
Wire Distribution With Regional Voltages Figure 2. 120/240 V ac, Single Phase, 3-
Wire Power System
Figure 1 shows a 3-phase wye (star), 4-wire distribution system with regional voltages, also
with neutral ground (earth).
Figure 2 shows the 120/240 V ac, single phase, 3-wire distribution system with center-tapped
ground, prevalently used in North America. .

Voltage ranges are customarily denoted with a dash(-), such as “100-240 V ac.” Separated
voltage ranges are customarily denoted with a slash (/)such as “100-120/200-240 V ac.”
However, to denote multiple-voltage/multiple-wire systems, the slash is used to denote the
difference between the two voltages.

Phases are denoted as “3ph” or “3-phase.” Number of wires are denoted like “4-W” or “4-
wire”

For the following, state the electrical ratings as clearly as possible, using necessary terms of
voltage, phases, number of wires, current, and frequency.

1. [5 Points] If you have electrical utilization equipment that needs three (3) 120 V ac phases,
no neutral, draws 32 A per phase, what would the electrical rating be?

2. [5 Points] (a) You have an industrial UPS that has a main UPS mains input of 480 V AC, 3
phase , 3 wire, 60 Hz, 60 A, a bypass mains input also 480 V ac 3 phase, 3 wire, 60 Hz, 60 A,
an output of 208 V ac, 3 ph, 4 wire, 60 Hz, 90 A, and a DC/battery input of 110 V DC. What
would the electrical ratings be?

3. [5 Points] (a) If you have a three-wire electrical utilization equipment that uses North
American line-to-line voltages of either 208 V or 240 V, 16 A, and a line-to-neutral load of
10 A, how will you electrically rate this utilization equipment in voltage, number of wires,
current, and frequency?

(b) Is this single or multiple phase?

4. [5 Points] Using “Electric Current Abroad” (on Canvas site), what is the nominal voltage
(single/3-phase) and frequency of the power system used in:
a) New Zealand
b) Germany

c) Sao Paulo., Brazil

5. [5 Points] For Figure 1, Let IA= 75∠0° = 75 + j0

IB=90∠ 120 °= -45 + j77.94
Ic= 110∠240 °= -55 - j95.26

Figure 3. IT Power System - Neutral Isolated from Ground/Protective Earth

6. [5 Points]
(a) With an IT power system in which the power system and neutral point is isolated from
ground/protective earth, give one example of a transient condition (current or voltage)
that is avoided by totally isolating the power system from ground/earth, or by connecting
the neutral to ground/earth through a high impedance?

(b) Give one industrial example where the IT power system is useful to avoid the transient
condition in (a)?
