General Instructions
It is important to establish a playful and relaxed rapport with the children to be assessed, via some simple initial
conversation among topics of interest to the child (see example below). The child should perceive the following
assessment almost as a game to be enjoyed rather than an exam. It is important to read ONLY the sections in boxes
aloud slowly and clearly.

Verbal Consent: Read the text in the box clearly to the child, in the language the child understands best:

● Ako si ___________. Ako ay isang kasamahan sa Department of Education. Sinusubukan naming

intindihin kung papaano natututong magbasa ang mga bata. At isa ka sa mga napili upang makatulong sa
amin.

● Nais sana naming mahingi ang iyong tulong para dito. Subalit, hindi mo kinakailangang sumali dito kung
ayaw mo, hindi ka namin pipilitin.

● May mga ipapakita ako sa iyo na mga letra, salita at maikling kuwento at nais kong basahin mo ang mga
ito nang malakas sa Ingles at Filipino.

● Gamit ang relo na ito, makikita ko kung gaano katagal inabot ang iyong pagbabasa.

● Ito ay HINDI isang pagsusulit at hindi ito makaaapekto sa iyong marka sa paaralan.

● May mga ilan din akong katanungan tungkol sa iyong pamilya, katulad ng kung anong wika ang ginagamit
ninyo sa bahay at ilang bagay na mayroon ang iyong pamilya.

 Task 1. Phonemic Awareness – Initial sound identification
This is NOT a timed exercise and THERE IS NO STUDENT SHEET. Read these instructions to the child:
Ngayon, simulan na natin ang mga gawain sa Filipino.
May sasabihin akong mga salita. Pagkasabi ko ng salita, ibibigay mo ang unang tunog nito. Halimbawa,
kapag sinabi ko ang salitang “mata,” sasabihin mo “mmm.”
1. Subukan mo ito. Ano ang unang tunog ng salitang “sako”?

 Task 2. Letter SOUND Knowledge
Place the student sheet of LETTERS in front of the child. Prepare the timer for one minute. Say:
Narito ang isang pahina na puno ng mga letra ng Alpabetong Filipino. Sabihin mo sa akin ang TUNOG ng
lahat ng mga letra na kaya mo. Inuulit ko, TUNOG at hindi PANGALAN ng letra ang iyong ibibigay.

Halimbawa, ang tunog ng letra na ito [point to O] ay “O”.

1. Ngayon ay subukan mo ito. Sabihin mo sa akin ang tunog ng letra na ito [point to V]:

Start the timer to count DOWN from 60 to 0 when the child reads the first letter. Follow along with your pencil and
clearly mark any incorrect letters with a slash ( / ). Count self-corrections as correct. If you’ve already marked the self-
corrected letter as incorrect, circle the letter and go on. Stay quiet, except if the child hesitates for 3 seconds, then
point to the next letter and say “Please try the next one.” Mark the letter you provide to the child as incorrect. If
the student gives you the letter name, rather than the sound, provide the letter sound and say: [“ Please tell me the
SOUND of the letter”]. This prompt may be given only once during the exercise. AFTER 60 SECONDS SAY,
“stop.” Mark the final letter read with a bracket ( ] ).
Early Stop Rule: If you have marked as incorrect all of the answers on the first line with no self-corrections, say
“Thank you!” discontinue this exercise, check the box at the bottom, and go on to the next exercise.

Narito ang ilang mga salita. Basahin mo sa akin ang mga salita hanggang sa abot ng iyong
makakaya. Basahin mo ang mga salita at huwag mong babaybayin o i-spell ang mga ito.
Halimbawa, ang salitang ito ay “bukas” [point to the word].

 Task 5. Passage reading and Comprehension

Set the timer to COUNT DOWN from 60 seconds. Start the timer when the child reads the first word. Follow along with your pen and clearly mark any
incorrect words with a slash ( ). Count self-corrections as correct. Stay quiet, except if the child hesitates for 3 seconds, point to the next letter and say “Please
try the next one”. The skipped word should be marked incorrect. A skipped line should be marked incorrect by drawing a line through it. After 60 seconds (or if
the child reads the whole story in less than 60 seconds) take the text away from the child. Read instructions for the questions to the child, then read each
question slowly and clearly. Read the question only if the bracket is placed after the word in BOLD text on the same row. Give the child 5 seconds to respond,
you may repeat the question once if the child remains silent. Mark the answers to the questions as correct, incorrect, or no response. Answers with similar
meanings to those provided are acceptable. Prosody scoring: 1=word-by-word, slow, laborious; 2=small chunks, awkward; 3=fluent, but does not mark
punctuation; incorrect phrase groups, no expression; 4=fluent, with expression to mark punctuation and/or direct speech. Early stop rule: If the child reads
