What Is This Module About?
Noting Details is about paying attention to some details in the story we read,
watch, or even details in the selection. In reading or watching a story, we must
remember the important facts or details in a story. This will help us understand
and appreciate the story better. Details are small pieces of information that support
the main idea. It speaks about people, events, time, objects, circumstances,
situations, and manners. Noting Details questions Who, What, Where, When Why
and How. They are called WH and H questions.

Mrs. Delgado was a deeply religious woman. She would go to church every
morning before going to market. After hearing mass, she would buy sampaguita
garlands from a young boy.

This boy came from a poor family. He had to work on the street, along with
his parents and other siblings who were also vendors, in order for their family to
eat. He would stand on the same spot on the sidewalk everyday to sell sampaguita
garlands.
Because the boy was kind and polite, Mrs. Delgado grew fond of him. She
bought all her sampaguita garlands from him. And every now and then, she would
give him food and some clothes and shoes of her sons.
The boy, on the other hand, would thank her politely and give her an extra
garland for her kindness.
One day, Mrs. Delgado stayed in the church longer than usual. When she
came out of the church, she was surprised to see many people staring at one area
of the sidewalk. It was the young sampaguita vendor’s spot. But he wasn’t there.
On the ground where he used to stand was his crushed garlands and some drops
of blood. According to some bystanders, a delivery truck lost its brakes and jumped
on the sidewalk.

A short story has five important elements: characters, setting, plot, point of
view and theme.
1. The characters are the people, or sometimes the animals, that participate in
the action of a short story. Characters may be classified as major or minor,
depending on their role and significance in the building of the story’s plot. A
character may be a protagonist or the hero in a short story or an antagonist
or the villain.
2. The setting refers to the time and place in which the action of a story
occurs. It is one of the major elements of a short story.
5. The theme is the main idea or message of a story. It shows the important
matter covered in the story that ranges from friendship.

The main idea is a sentence that tells what the paragraph is about. It is
what the writer wants us to know and remember about the topic in the paragraph.
To identify the main idea, answer the question, “What is the most important thing

Supporting details make up the body of the paragraph. They give details to
support the main idea through facts, examples, explanations, details, or
descriptions.

CONCEPT NOTE
Every paragraph has a main idea. It is the most important piece of
information that an author states implicitly or explicitly to let you know the concept
of the paragraph. The sentence where you can find the main idea is called the topic
sentence or key sentence. Though often found at the middle, or at the end. The
main idea is supported by details found in the rest of the sentences in the
paragraph. To find the main idea, the first thing you must do is to identify the topic
or the subject of the paragraph.
