AMU’s Prominent Researcher, Dr. Addisu Fekadu wins 2.

3 Million ETB Grant for


Technology Scale-Up Research

Arba Minch University’s prominent researcher, and coordinator for the Enset project, Dr.
Addissu Fekadu wins a grant of 2.3 million ETB from Bio and Emerging Technology
Institute (BETin) for his proposal on "Production, Popularization and, Commercialization of
Value added Enset-based Food Products through the Adoption of Proven Processing-
Technologies."

As stated in the BETiN award notification letter and agreement document, the new
collaborative project is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
Canada, managed by BETiN, and will last 24 months. As a result, the project has begun on
June 1, 2023, with a work completion date of May 31, 2025.

Dr. Addisu Fekadu in his Exclusive Interview with Communication Affairs Directorate
/CAD/ said, the national contest was organized to support completed researches and enable
them to descend into society. He noted that out of the 137 proposals that were submitted
for the competition, ours was the best executed and had the greatest budget allocation of
the eight project concepts that were chosen as a nation.

Dr. Addisu further explained that the project, which will be executed in Gamo Highlands,
will focus on conducting more research on Enset, mainly on the enrichment of new value-
added foods from the crop. Additionally, he noted that introducing, and adapting, the
newly introduced innovative processing technologies to the community and
commercializing value-added Enset foods to the market are also additional goals of the
project. Local farmers and the unemployed youth of the area will benefit from the project,
he remarked
