Donna – The owner of the Taverna on the Greek island of Kalokairi;
Sophie 's mother, (around 40, American). She is the former lead
singer of “Donna and the Dynamos. Honest, straight and hard-working,
she is the most naturalistic and vulnerable
of the characters.
Young Donna 1 – with Sam
Young Donna 2 – with Harry
Young Donna 3 – with Bill
Sophie – Donna’s headstrong 21-year-old daughter, Sophie is
determined to have what her mother never had: a traditional family
and a father to walk her down the aisle. Young, bright and
energetic, she has lived all her life on the island and is ready to
leave.
Tanya – One of Donna’s oldest and best friends, Tanya (around 40).
Wild, fun-loving and a big character.
Rosie – Donna’s friend (around 40, American, often plus-size) a
former member of the Dynamos; free-spirited and a renowned author of
cookbooks. Mostly comic.
Sam – One of Sophie’s Potential fathers and a wealthy architect
(40-50, American). Sam has regretted leaving Donna all his life and
now finds himself divorced and back in her presence. He is
straight-laced, confident and composed.
Harry – Another of Sophie’s potential fathers and a respected London
banker, (40-50, English). A quirky nice guy.
Bill – Another of Sophie’s potential fathers, a well-known travel
writer. A real character (40-50, often English or Australian).
Sky – Sophie’s fiancé; a former stockbroker who moved to the island
in a young version of a mid-life crisis. Perhaps he is too eager to
please and has not quite found all the answers he had hoped for on
the island.
Ali – Sophie’s friends who have traveled to the island for the
wedding. Bridesmaid excitement.
Lisa – Sophie’s friends who have traveled to the island for the
wedding. Bridesmaid excitement.
MaryAnne – Sophie’s friend. Clumsy, innocent.
Sarah – Sophie’s friend.

opening. She holds three white envelopes.)
(She sings to herself)

SCENE 1 - THE BEACH

(It is a bright sunny day, the day before SOPHIE & SKY’s wedding).
(ALI, LISA, MARYANNE & SARAH throw their bags and come running to
SOPHIE).

(GREEK 1, GREEK 2, GREEK 3, GREEK 4 enter stage as if they were on the

beach).

SOPHIE: Oh my god! Ali, Lisa, MaryAnne, Sarah. I missed you so much! I can't
believe you are here!
ALI: Of course we are! How could we miss our best friend's wedding?!
SARAH: What a journey! Guess who left her ticket on the kitchen table?
(pointing at MaryAnne)
MARYANNE: But we are here now, right? You weren’t getting married without
your bridesmaid!!
SARAH: Yes!!! So…where is him? Your Sky?
LISA: We want to meet him! And your ring!!!
SOPHIE: (shows them her ring) Take a look at it…
LISA: It's sooo beautiful! I want one!
MARYANNE: get in the line sweetheart…
ALI: And how's your mom? I bet Donna´s going nuts over this wedding!
SOPHIE: Yeah… Well, listen. I´ve got a secret. And you are the only ones I
can tell!
LISA: Is it about your dress?
SOPHIE: No, but it is about the wedding. (PAUSE) I´ve invited my dad!!!
ALI: I thought you didn’t know who your father was…
SOPHIE: Not exactly, but… I found my mom’s diary, and I know I shouldn’t
have… but I read it!!!
ALI, LISA, MARYANNE, SARAH: SOPHIEEEE!
SARAH: And what did you find out?
SOPHIE: Well, I discovered my mom had three friends…look! (She opens the
diary). (Reading) July 17th. What a night! After the show Sam rowed me to
the little island. We danced on the beach…

(DONNA 1 & SAM appear on stage acting out what happened years ago).

DONNA 1: Oh Sam…thank you for tonight. It was lovely…

SAM: You are lovely Donna. There is something I want to ask you…
DONNA 1: Yes Sam?
SAM: Would you like to be my…
(Back to SOPHIE & THE GIRLS)

LISA: My What???
SOPHIE: It doesn't say.
MARYANNE: Oh my god!
SOPHIE: (goes back to reading) Sam is the one…I know he is…I’ve never felt
like this before.

(SOPHIE continues as if reading from the diary, but now she sings)

LISA: So this guy Sam is your dad?

SOPHIE: the plot thickens… (flicking through to another page and reading
again). August 4th. What a night! I was still feeling depressed about Sam.
After the show Bill rented a motor-boat and we went to the island.
SARAH: Bill?

(BILL & DONNA 2 appear on stage and act out what happened that day).

BILL: You were great tonight Donna.

DONNA 2: you think so? I was not feeling right…lucky the girls were there
to support me.
BILL: I’m serious! You were fantastic…actually you ARE fantastic Donna.
DONNA 2: you know what Bill…

(back to the GIRLS)

ALI: What???!!!
SOPHIE: dot, dot, dot

SOPHIE: (finding another page) August 15th. What a night! Harry turned up
out of the blue, so I said: I’ll show him the island!

(DONNA 3 & HARRY appear on stage)

HARRY: I’m so happy I came to visit you.

DONNA 3: it was a lovely surprise…for real…
HARRY: So tell me Donna…
DONNA 3: Tell you what?
HARRY: how about you and me…

(Back to the GIRLS)

GIRLS: (guessing with complicity) dot dot dot

LISA: Ok… so… Which of the three did you invite?
SOPHIE: (nervous pause) The three of them?
ALI, LISA, MARYANNE, SARAH: SOPHIEEEE!

(Actors freeze except for past scene actors who dance to the end of Honey
Honey song).

SCENE 2- DONNA AND THE DYNAMOS

The ISLANDERS are seated on apron stage, feeding the doves and eating. Donna
enters the stage from one side, fixing the place around with tools.

THEODORE (ISLANDER 1): Look. There goes Donna.

OPHELIA (ISLANDER 2): Donna who?
THEODORE: the one who owns the hostel.
OPHELIA: Oh yes…she is always running.
PENELOPE (ISLANDER 3): That hostel needs some fixing.
CORA (ISLANDER 4): I’ve heard her daughter is getting married.
PENELOPE: Indeed!
CORA: We are having a party!
PENELOPE & CORA: Party! Party! Party!
Rosie and Tanya enter from the other side carrying luggage. Tanya with high
heels.
THEODORE: SHHH…look!! Talking about party…
OPHELIA: Some people just don’t fit the island…
CORA: Maybe they are famous…
PENELOPE: Donna used to have a girl band when she was young…Donna and the
Dynamos…
OPHELIA: those are for sure a dynamo…(meaning energetic)
They all laugh.

(Focus moves into)

TANYA: One more step with these heels and I’m going to die!
ROSIE: What did you expect? A limousine? Come on Cleopatra!
TANYA: Of course! Donna knows I don’t do walking…
DONNA: Well look what the tide washed in!
ROSIE: Hey! For one night!
TANYA: And one night only.
ALL: It’s Donna and the Dynamos! (They hug each other really happy)
ROSIE: It’s so great to be here. How long has it been?
TANYA: Too long, and I can hardly believe our baby girl is getting married!
DONNA: Yeah. Well. Here you have it. My modest hostel. Sometimes I feel like
I spend more money than I earn trying to keep this place up.
TANYA: It’s really sweet,but I thought your dream was to set up in Greece?
(trying to sit on a chair)
DONNA: Don't sit on that chair! It's broken!
ROSIE: Yeah. What happened to all your dreams?
DONNA: Well, things don’t always work out do they?

#3 - MONEY MONEY MONEY

SCENE 3 - THE MEN’S ARRIVAL

Bill, Sam and Harry enter from one side of the stage with luggages and their
invitations for the wedding.

HARRY: I’m glad to get off that boat!

BILL: Oh, that was nothing! You should try a kayak in swamps!
HARRY: Oh! You are Bill! The author of “SPONTANEOUS ADVENTURES”! Aren't you?
I love your book. It drives me crazy.
BILL: I’m glad you liked it! And you (looking at Sam) what are you looking
at?
SAM: (Looking around) You see this tavern? I built it. Well, I designed it.
I drew up the plans at the back of a restaurant menu, 21 years ago. I can’t
believe she actually built it!
BILL: She? Who?
SAM: Donna, who else?
BILL and HARRY: Donna?!
HARRY: Do you know her?
SAM: Of course! We used to date. I was deeply in love with her. But I had to
go. And when I came back, she didn't want to know about me.
DONNA 1: Sam… it’s too late now. I met someone else. And you were the one
that got away…
SAM: And you?
HARRY: I was studying Liberal Arts in Paris, and I came to the isle for
inspiration. That’s when I met her and her band. But we had a fight because
I broke her guitar unintentionally.
DONNA 3: Harry! I can't believe what you did! How am I supposed to sing
without my guitar?!
HARRY: She was a great friend and a great musician.
BILL: Yeah, she was! I met her here at the isle, too! I was on one of my
boat adventures and I came to spend some days here. That’s when I heard a
band playing some nice music and met Donna. She told me she liked me, but I
had to continue with my boat adventure, so I left.
DONNA 2: Bill! If you leave this island I don't want to see you ever
again!!!!
BILL: I think she got mad.

Sophie enters listening to their conversation.

SOPHIE: Good afternoon. Can I help you?
BILL: I’m Bill Austin. Do you have a room for me? I was invited to a
wedding.
SOPHIE: (Pauses, flustered) Bill Austin?
HARRY: I’m Bright. Harry Bright.

SOPHIE: (even more flustered) Harry!... (to Sam) So you must be…
SAM: Sam Carmichael, yeah. Mmmm, you were expecting us?
SOPHIE: Yes. Yes, of course. (nervous laugh) I’ll get the keys.
SAM: You’re Donna’s daughter. Right?
SOPHIE: Yeah.
HARRY: I thought she looked familiar. So you’re Sophia.
SOPHIE: It’s just Sophie.
BILL: Well, Sophie’s pretty.
SAM: Where’s Donna? I wanna see her.
SOPHIE: No, no you can’t! You’re a secret. I sent the invitations. She
doesn’t know.
BILL: Why?
SOPHIE: Because... Mum’s always talking about her friends from the old days,
and I thought she’d just be thrilled if I invited you all. But then... she’s
got herself in such a state about this wedding, and she’s not expecting
guests, and she will die. So just pretend you’re here for a holiday, and
she’ll get a lovely surprise when she sees you all at my wedding. (nervous
laugh) We´ll tell her the secret later.
SAM: Oh my God. You are worse than your mom!
SOPHIE: (Laughs) I’ll take you to your rooms now.
(They begin to exit when Donna enters, singing or humming.)

BILL: Donna?
DONNA: (Stops and looks at Bill) Bill!
HARRY: Hi, Donna!
DONNA: Harry?
SAM: Hi!
DONNA: (Angry) You!

ROSIE: What a coincidence. And what’s the problem?!
DONNA: I´m too busy to cope with them right now! I need to focus on the
wedding!
TANYA: And?... I don’t see a problem at all.
DONNA: There’s something else. I never told Sophie who her father is.
TANYA and ROSIE: Whaaaat?!
ROSIE: Well what’s the bigdeal?

TANYA: Whatever happened to our crazy Donna?
DONNA: I grew up.
ROSIE: Well we think you should grow back down again!
TANYA: And we will always be Donna & The Dynamos, even when we get older
than this…Can you imagine us older??? We are QUEENS my friend!!!

SCENE 5 - SKY AND HIS FRIENDS
Sky enters walking a little bit nervous but joking with his friends.

TIMMY: Sky, my friend. You are getting married! I can’t believe you took the
bait!
SKY: Thank you, guys. I can’t believe the day has come…
RACHEL: Yeah, we are all really excited for you. This is going to be the
best day of your life!
PEPPER: Unless you screw it up, of course.
Sky glares at Pepper, but he just laughs and nudges him playfully.
SKY: HA HA. You are so funny, Pepper.
PEPPER: No, seriously. We're really happy for you.
TIMMY: Of course! You can count on us for anything!
RACHEL: Yeah! And when are we going to meet your Sophie?
SKY: She should come in a minute. I think she’s getting ready for the
bachelorette party.
PEPPER: I can’t wait to meet HER friends!
RACHEL: Oh… You continue making fun of Sky, but I think you will be the
next one to get married!
TIMMY: Uhhh, I think you are right.
SKY: Hey, guys. Sophie 's coming!

SCENE 6 - THE BACHELORETTE PARTY

Sophie, Ali and Lisa enter the stage.

SOPHIE: Girls, I want to introduce you to Sky and his friends.

ALI: Hiii, Sky. Wooow, you are so handsome! You’d better take care of our
Sophie!
LISA: Don’t you have a friend for me? (laughs looking at Sky’s friends)
TIMMY: (to Pepper) I think you’ve found your match.
RACHEL: Hi, there! Nice to meet you!
SKY: Hi, girls! It’s so great to finally meet you! Sophie’s best friends!
ALI: I can't believe you two are getting married!

LISA: And I can't believe you finally found your father… or fathers? Oops.
SKY: (Confused and a little bit angry) What?! Sophie… What does it mean?
SOPHIE: It’s a mess, and it’s all my fault. I know I shouldn’t have, but I
read Mom’s diary, and I’ve got three possible dads. I invited them all to
the wedding, and I thought I’d know who my father was as soon as I saw him,
but I didn’t.
SKY: Slow down - go back a bit. You did what?
SOPHIE: I invited my Dads to our wedding. It was three months ago. I wasn’t
even sure if they’d all come.
SKY: Three months? Why didn’t you tell me? I thought we talked about
everything. Is that what this big white wedding’s for? It’s a setup just so
you can find your dad?
SOPHIE: No! It’s not! It’s knowing who I am. I wanted to get married knowing
who I am!
SKY: Sophie… you don’t need to know who your dad is to know who you are.
I’m sorry, but I have to go. I gotta get ready for the party. (leaves)
LISA: I´m sorry, Sophie. It wasn't my intention!
ALI: But Sky´s right, you know? You don’t need to know who your dad is to
know who you are.
LISA: Yes. I think you should tell your mom the truth before I open my mouth
again…
SOPHIE: Probably you are right. Well, are you ready for our party? I will
speak with my mom after it!

(CLOSE CURTAINS)
Islanders enter apron a little bit nervous.

THEODOR: Ladies, we have terrible news for you!!!

PENELOPE: The band you hired for tonight has canceled at the last minute!
OPHELIA: (to the audience) What are we going to do?!! Should we cancel the
party?
CORA: NOOO! Well… I have an idea. I mean… we do have a band with us
tonight.
THEODOR: Well for one night, and one night only…
PENELOPE: The Sheridan Taverna is proud to present the one and only…
CORA: The world’s first Girl Power band.
OPHELIA: Give it up for “Donna and the Dynamos.”!!!

DONNA: Oh! You are just saying that because you are my daughter! Sophie. Are
you really sure you want to get married to Sky?
SOPHIE: Mom. Of course I am. I know you could do it alone in your life but
that's not what I want.
DONNA: I just wanted to know if you were sure. That 's all.
SOPHIE: (laughs a little bit nervous) Hey, mom (A big pause)
DONNA: Yeah? What is wrong?
SOPHIE: I need to tell you something, and I really wish you could understand
it… and not get mad about it.
DONNA: (Starting to get nervous) What is it?
Sam enters from one side of the stage listening to what they are saying.
SOPHIE: You know that I have always dreamed of knowing who my dad is…
DONNA: (Interrupting her) Sophie, I already told you I don’t want to talk
about it!
SOPHIE: No! Mom, just listen to me. I know I shouldn’t have, but I did read
your diary.
DONNA: You did what?!!!
SOPHIE: I knew you were going to get mad, so I didn’t tell you. But there
were three guys, Sam, Harry and Bill… so I invited them to my wedding!
DONNA: It was you! You invited the three of them! Sophie! What have you
done?!
